As a retail pharmacy technician, I can say that we definitely deal directly with people and get yelled at daily.

I worked retail for 13 years (ominous I know) and all it did was make me see the world as a realist and the reality is most if not all humans are broken and demented people who either hide their pain with humour or take it out on people they believe are below them. And usually the most sadistic people work in upper management in all jobs not just retail.

Every time I go to work I could die with a violent explosion of high voltage electricity....but at least it ain't retail 😂

I became a janitor after working in retail for 4 years and I'm happier than ever! The pay is better, I work independently at my own pace and best of all I no longer have to put up with customer's BULLSHIT. I rather scrub toilets than work in retail ever again.

I cant even work retail anymore. Did it for three years and all it did was aggravate my bone condition and make me hate people lol.

I worked at Walmart nearly five years. I noticed it changing me, I was really starting to hate people. Not just customers but coworkers, too. Especially managers. Walmart managers truly are the worst. Anyway, I got a job at a small hotel, quit Walmart, and wow am I glad I did. You still deal with some shitty people occasionally but it’s nowhere near the level of what you deal with at Walmart. Since the hotel is small and I work evenings I’m the only staff on duty when I’m there. I call the shots, I run the place, it’s great. For anyone looking to leave retail going to hotel work is a great alternative!

I have the privilege of doing overnight stock in a store that closes an hour into my shift, so I get to avoid 95% of the bulls**t. If you're a late nighter I would definitely recommend.

Private security guard job. Especially if you are on a locked down, overnight site with good Wi-Fi. No supervisor and only a skeleton crew you barely interact with. Other than walking the occasional round. It's mostly sitting at a post and slacking off. I've been doing this for almost 20 years. I love my job.

I work in seasonal fulfillment for Macy’s where I help pack online orders and customers aren’t allowed back where we pack everything and the only time you even see customers is when you go on your lunch break because the employee lounge is on the second floor and the packing room is in the basement it’s pretty chill

My dad used to have a landscaper business it was nice while it lasted, but there was a lot of competition and it finally killed the business. Working for a landscaper for your first job can be really nice if you dont mind physical labor.

I'm so glad I found this channel. I've been in retail for almost 2 years and it truly sucked the life out of me. I won't go into all the details but it got so bad I checked myself into a hospital for depression in Aug 2020. I'm trying to find a new job now.

I've been a school custodian for the last 14 years. Super easy job, work at your own pace, no boss standing over your shoulder, good pay/benefits, guarenteed 40 hours, holiday pay, paid sick leave, no customer service at all, work days or nights, the list goes on and on. If not a school, be a custodian somewhere else. I wouldnt reccommend hotels though.

night time security guard is a good one, break-ins and thefts happen so rarely because most people are not up at night, and thefts are actually more likely to happen in the daytime because it's easier to blend in, whereas at night you are going to stick out.

The Hotel front desk job is just as stressful as retail depending on the Hotel itself.

Drive a truck. I average $800-$1000 a week, hitting about $500 on my lowest week and $1800 on my best week. I also have full benefits. Not to brag, I just know money talks, so I wanted to open with that. I'm 26 and dropped out of college...3 times. I love my job. I go out on the road at the beginning of the week and come back for the weekend, usually driving 5 or 6 days a week and then most of the time getting 2 days off (in a row) before hitting the road again. Legally, I am required to take a 10 hour break between shifts, and get at least a 30 minute break in every 8 hour period. There's a computer on the truck that keeps up with all of this time, so it can't be cheated and I get EVERY break I'm owed without question. This is a legal requirement that carries a heavy penalty for both me and my company if I try to violate it. I never have to interact with anyone. I mean when I stop to take a break I may say hi to someone in a truck stop, and any time I deliver a load (which is usually about once a day) I'll have to talk to the person at the desk so they can tell me where to put the trailer and whatnot, but that's it. I don't even see my manager. I met him once, and beyond that, we just communicate via the truck's computer and sometimes on the phone. So no one's ever breathing down my neck either. Basically, as long as I can make every load on time, I don't have to talk to anyone at all. All my load assignments come over the computer. If I'm ever too tired to drive or the weather is too dangerous, all I have to do is communicate that in message form over the computer and legally there's nothing they can do about it. I work for a good company anyway, so they don't question me on these kinds of things. Trucks are surprisingly difficult to handle and backing up a trailer is basically a fucking art form, but once you get good at all of it and get in your groove, it's usually a pretty easy job. The only people I've ever met that didn't like truck driving were people that were either bad at it, or they needed to be home more often. Fanta, you live in Arizona, right? I've been there. I've been everywhere, thanks to this job. You can live anywhere and do this job, as well. First company I worked for was a company in Salt Lake City, Utah... And I live in Tennessee. If you want to eliminate your home bills altogether, you can...you can straight-up live in your truck and save all that money. I don't recommend that, but you can. It's nice to have somewhere to retreat to after work, but you do you. Also, it's a myth that automation is just going to drive truckers out of their jobs. It's not backed by any actual facts. The industry is actually short like 50,000 drivers right now and that number is supposed to double within the next couple of years. If automation ever replaces actual drivers, I seriously bet I will be retired before that ever happens. This is a subject I'm happy to explain more in depth or debate anyone on who's interested. With the shortage, it's a driver's market as far as getting jobs is concerned. Companies will trip all over themselves to hire anyone with a CDL as long as you have a good record. Drive a truck.

Ive been doing janitorial work for quite a while. It's pretty hard physical work at times, but you get to work by yourself and people often appreciate the cleaning. It often pays a little bit better than retail as well.

Retail 10 years with full-time for the last 2 years. I work our 4 areas as well as cashier and backroom for $11.71 per hour. I'm currently working 12 hours the next 2 weeks while the manger hires seasonal workers. Qualified to be a coordinator, but was told I need better people skills for being "too direct"

I work at Macy's right now, and I've got a couple of ideas for getting out of retail forever, (hopefully). One of the major ones though is fixing broken consoles/games off of ebay, and selling them for a little less than market value. If I do this on a consistent basis, and I play my cards right, that business will get me by, and I don't have to worry about the negatives of retail.

I work as a mail sorter. Sure, it can be very repetitive work, but we don’t have to deal with any customers at all and all the staff there are pretty chill. My company hires people with little to no experience.

I work at a Costco optical laboratory as a lab assistant and I love it. My coworkers and supervisors are pretty cool and I don't have to deal with the general public, it's great.

Having worked in a pharmacy before I can tell you that prescription customers are the WORST customers there are, they are basically legal drug addicts screaming for their narcotics and get mad when there are too many state regulations to where they can't have it right away. (Most states require a waiting period on narcotics, people got mad every day over that). And due to today's political climate everyone thinks they're entitled to free drugs, I've had a customer get mad and throw a fit and complain to corporate because they had a LITERAL 1 dollar co-pay, one dollar! They didn't want to pay the one dollar they wanted it free! On a CII Drug! And most of them were too stupid to understand that as a pharmacy we are NOT the insurance agency and we are NOT the government. You'd be amazed how many people thought that a retail pharmacy was a government ran place like a hospital and so many people thought that we were the insurance agencies too when we have zero control over any of that. If the insurance says hey your co-pay is 1 dollar, your co-pay is 1 dollar. As a pharmacy tech we have 0 control over what the insurance expects from you and what you have legally agreed upon paying for. I'd rather work as a cashier at a grocery store than in a pharmacy ever again.

Thank goodness for automation , retail jobs will be obsolete

I work in a warehouse and its alright no direct contact with customers, and if you can afford the little bit of schooling truck driver is a good option

I heard Loss Prevention is a good job too. Especially if you're just on the floor looking like a random customer all you literally have to do is walk around and do nothing! You pretty much get up close to customers that may look fishy but I heard that they really don't except you to do much but to see who may be shoplifting.

Also I used to work as a level 3 security officer and one of my contacts was an overnight 16 hour job at a pier 21 warehouse. This was right before Fallout 4 came out. I just carried my rig up there and played The Witcher 3 then Fallout 4 for hoooooouuuuurs on the clock. Never even had to shoot anyone.

Honestly I work in retail all year around if you work in the backroom part time building things, putting smaller things on the tanks. Its not half as bad as working out on the floor dealing with people .

Great list! I was in security for a little while; all I can say is be careful who you work for. Some of the larger security companies will throw you around like the body you are to them since they're constantly stretched thin on employees. Also, at least in NH, there is a two month academy to become a corrections officer, so I'd recommend checking your state's hiring process if you're seriously considering that.

I worked at a hotel as a valet. Loved the job, but the concierge always get shit on by people that are "credit card rich" or they're actually rich and they think they're better than you. And yes. You need to be an attractive person (typically female) to have any sort of job security.

actually night shift corrections officer in a prison is usually pretty chill , the inmates are on lock-down and are usually sleeping .

I work as a pharmacy technician right now but I don't plan on being a pharmacist. My major is organizational leadership and I plan on using this to put on my resume as healthcare work experience to work in the medical business.

Here’s one I would add: Pool Service I worked at Starbucks and got a job doing pool service. I love it! M-F only, I get my own work truck, make MUCH more than minimum barely see my boss, I drive around, service my pool routes, start when I’m ready, finish when I’m done. It’s great. Has it’s bad things for sure, but they FAR out way any retail job

I work nights 4 days per week @40hrs as security at a shipyard. Scan a few checkpoints every 2 hours, check some IDs in the morning. Play Nintendo Switch and videos all night. Pay... well it's about the same as retail where I'm at, but without all the bullshit. Ah, but you have to pay for the training... and certify with your .357, .38s, or 9mm yearly.

If you're good with kids, day care worker is a possibility too! I am a supply educator for a daycare to avoid working retail while still in school. It also usually pays more than minimum wage 😊

Got a job at a hotel once and its the same as my retail jobs. I had a guy threaten to kill me if i didn't give him a room, almost every week day rich biz guys would ask me to join them in their rooms... it was awful

As a hotel Manager in one of the top hotels in the USA, Front desk/hotel employee is NOT for everyone. If its a Holiday inn type, then ok its easy and not stressful. Once you get 4 star - luxury, its a very stressful job and not many people are able to make it past a year due to the stress.

I'm a night watch at a small campus dorm. The dorm is all male and 99% of them don't cause any trouble. My night consists of watching cameras in a dorm full of sleeping students and occasionally letting in/out the late night student making a Walmart trip or whatever. My office also doesn't have cameras and since my work desktop has three monitors I normally bring a console with me and literally get paid to play video games all night. Granted I could find a higher paying job but for what it is and what I end up doing it's a good gig.

In construction if you go the union route depending on what state you live in you can make anywhere from $30-$50 a hour

As a freshman in high school who was worried about a first job whenever I can start driving alone (because my dad wants me to get a job whenever I can start driving alone ie whenever I get my full license) this was super helpful and very informative

I'm a male and I work in a dental office. Yes the dental field below Dentists is majority female but we do exist lol. Granted I'm one of 2 guys left in the office and the other.....as I said....is a dentist lol. Also........I was a Pharm Tech in highschool. And you definitely deal with customers. Your sole job isnt putting pills in a bottle. You're also ringing patients up for their medication.....and if their medicine isnt ready...or it wasnt filled because they messed up. If they have to WAIT AT ALL..... they are coming for you. They are as nasty if not nastier than retail customers . Seriously, I was stressed. I'd work in the clinic before open with the metal blinds down and as opening got close you could hear the customers outside gathering and getting ready. The moment before you raise the blind is the most religious moment of your life. You are praying to god, buddha and Morgan Freemen.

Not for everyone, if you have a 55wpm typing speed, data entry Back office work It can be a mind numbing and it can be INCREDIBLY boring Its chill, not a physical job I liked it

For me the coworkers and managers were even worse, cause you can't get away from them and sometimes they're just negative bitter people.. It just gets old to have everyone disrespecting you

You really really dont want to be a pharmacist. Unless you work in private practices, or in a hospital, its the worst job in the medical field. You have to deal with angry people all day and are overworked and underpaid. I don't work in pharmacy anymore but I heard they're now starting new graduates at like 60k a year which is crazy considering they have a doctorate.

Here's just a few maybe that can help. I know these are not options for people with certain restrictions or in certain areas, but JUST for getting out of retail's sake: -Local gov't or school job. Custodial/reception/bus dispatch/driver/meal prep. Not glamorous, but look specifically for schools and government. They usually pay a living wage. I interviewed for a Starbucks job that paid over 15 an hour, specifically because it was on a college campus. (this is decent pay for food/bev in Wisconsin). -Form processer for 3rd party benefits administration/data entry: worked this. It was a shitshow but I actually enjoyed it because it was so poorly run. So the standards were just to show up. Sat in a cubicle and tried to make sense of bad faxes and if I couldn't, I would reject it and someone else would have to deal with getting better papers. -Any type of entry-level hospital/clinic job. A simple one would be for backroom, transport, or tool sterilization. -Search the local area for research institutes and/or labs. They need people to process/maintain equipment and handle/process specimen. -Transport driver for medical supplies/for a small gig pharmacy. There are places that just deliver meds to people's homes. -Moving companies, especially in a college town. Look to see if tips are common. -Copper cable splicer and/or field technician - if it says specific electrical work experience is needed, ignore that part. Apply anyway and just do a couple read througha on ohm's law, spit out some terms, and a cable/telecom company MAY give you a shot. These guys are always needed (I work in a Network Operations Center). -Also please check for any local trades unions in your area. Even if you have zero experience, if they are hiring, give it a try. We are so depserately in need for tradespeople all over the country. There are absolutely exceptions where they will take you in if you show a passion for wanting to learn.

I've thought about driving UPS, Amazon, or even just the the post office, my concern is mostly the weather. I have also thought about being a C.O. but I dont think my fiance would like me doing that

Working retail (or any really low wage job) for more than about 3 months can really damage you as a person. I wish this was discussed far more. We should be encouraging people to avoid those jobs.

Fanta, just so you know "Construction workers" ususally do have to deal with customers. ESPECIALLY if you're a remodeller, or you do anything to do with existing construction. And really, theres not always work to do, especially in fall/winter.

Thanks for the video Fanta! Super informative :) I do pet-sitting on the side which is DEFINITELY much easier than babysitting. My friend's also a fitness/health coach and she makes decent money. There's also Customer Service Rep (Only good if you can deal w/phones all day) and nursery home work.

Apartment maintenance there's always openings and they make 13 to $20 an hour or more depending where you work at

I heard stories about drug addicts harassing pharmacies. Before I left Canada, there were signs up saying that they had no OxyContin on site. Was it a different drug? I’ve been out of Canada for so long that I can’t remember all the prescription drugs that were making headlines due to addictions. But I heard that things got so bad that they had notes on file to not fill more to someone than prescribed on file. This is also an issue for EMT’s and hospitals where addicted will feign illnesses in order to get their next morphine fix or whatever. These jobs can be dangerous because an addict will do whatever it takes to get their next fix.

I did IT help desk for a while and that job is super simple and I didn't even go to school for it. You just help a few old folks find where the windows key is.

A lot of custodial jobs start around 20+ an hour where I'm from

Guitar Center is considered retail, and I have met people that hate the job and don't see it any different than any other retail job, but I love it. Sure there are plenty of assholes, customers and employees, but when you genuinely have a passion for music, Guitar center is awesome. I can always deal with the corporate bullshit and customers because I just look around me and I am in paradise. I get to learn something new about music and tech every day and build connections with other musicians. Maybe the feeling will wear off, but I have been there for over a year and find it much more fulfilling than any other retail or food service job I've ever had. You are actually given some authority to negotiate with customers and your employers are generally understanding folk and they offer good insurance benefits for full timers. I also get to be more hands on and personal with customers instead of just standing at the register all day or pointing at things, and am not forced to stay in a certain department all day. I admit the way they calculate commission is a little underwhelming, but you are still mostly rewarded for your hard work.

Avoid the aviation industry if you can. if you wanna be a aircraft mechanic the liability is similar to someone in the medical field (surgeon,cardiologist) ie in the aviation if you leave a single tool on site ie on the taxiway your career is over for good.($50,000 in education gone down the drain) if you mess up you be doing triple time in jail since all your charges will be federal. someone in jail once said i want to do local not federal crimes. so you can see messing up is not an option and the work you did hunts you down the road until you die, the plane gets retired or someone else changes that part.(companies come and go but your signature lasts a lifetime) you also spend as much a 2 hours getting to your site imagine getting to the front desk of an office building at 7:00am and go through a maze that takes two hours to complete with security checkpoints to get to your cubicle. also say you get hired today you will in some horror scenarios wait 2 months before you can even start since you have to get a security badge to make sure you are not going to blow stuff up/do stupid stuff this SIDA Badge process can be worse than the DMV since you have to do it every time you switch jobs that time waiting for that access to work is unpaid time you dont get paid back. it took me 3 months from the day i applied to get my badge as a cabin cleaner. also going to aviation mechanic school is like studying physics or engineering IT IS HARD AF you will have to kill yourself studying and if you like to have a life well you can kiss that goodbye. you have to Jesus waking on water at the time of study even get a chance of passing the class. i struggled through aviation school before i found out this wasn't for me. you also will working overnights and ALL HOLIDAYS forever also you wont enjoy the summer/holiday season since you will be busy as hell. to quote a aviation mechanic "This is not a 9-5 job, it’s a 24x7 operation with the majority of your career spent working nights AND weekends in every possible combination of weather!" this isn't worth a free first class flight once a year and $50 an hour top pay and $20-$25 bottom/staring pay

I did construction and I can tell you it’s pretty chill. I basically got paid to go to Florida and go fishing off work. I painted a nursing home, which was pretty god damn mind numbing, but I no customers. I got paid $12 an hour which is eh, but I did it for the experience. I did construction work at another job and mostly just renovating shit. But I definitely recommend painting over dealing with other stupid shit like dry wall and tile

The Military is also a way to get a great career as well. Depending on what MOS you get, you get some decent bonuses and great benefits as well

Yes and no for hotel. Been night auditor for Springhill Suites in Va for years. Because of am the third shift, I check late check-ins/balance paperwork/check out early leaving people. But, sometimes guests talk very condescending and look down on you. Many times they do not tell us what is wrong, then complain and ask for everything under the sun but never gave us a chance to fix whatever issues they had.

Being an insurance adjuster is a good transition from retail.

Just moved to Texas from California trying to find decent pay. It’s a shocker with low pay but I did apply to the Amazon delivery driver just now so thank you, it has higher pay than other jobs

What kind of driver is Eric for Amazon? if he's a delivery driver, then he's very lucky. I've heard from Camelot 331 about how amazon has been treating their delivery drivers, which is actually, from what he said, worse than working in the warehouses.

My favorite job that i loved was being a ski instructor for young kids 3-5, We had a small corral and a bigger bunny hill. I would usually be sent up to the bigger bunny hill and it was so much fun because you get to ski and teach other people! I got good wage too and also got tips. Sometimes you wouldnt even see the parents till the end,and if they where around you just had fun and be goofy. I really want to work with young kids again or teenagers,it was so much fun and there so innocent. The say the most random stuff,and they usually make your day unless if the parent is being a pain in the ass. The thing I didnt like was you got payed by lesson not hour. There was only 1 day where I got only 1 lesson and I fought for more. They put me on hourly because they where afraid that i was gonna leave,for another hill that opened up called Big Snow
