It's worth noting that these L brackets really help prevent significant damage from drops. I tend to keep mine on my camera at all times even if I'm not using a tripod.

I was researching what the L bracket does, what makes one better than the other... different companies and you video answered all those questions. I found it doing a comparison search on google between to brackets rrs and another bracket company. I will for sure use your link in the future. Super clear video well explained with critical details. I already own Pro Media Brackets and will be going with them as well. I have GAS syndrome so I"m going to wait until I'm in a situation that an L bracket can help.

I stumbled upon this video while searching for Promediagear L bracket reviews. I own a Nikon D850 and recently purchased a Promediagear L bracket for it. This video helped make my purchase a happier one as I also believe that Promediagear has a superior product. I also own their BH50 ballhead and am very impressed with it. As you are probably aware the company also has a quick release system that pairs with the Peak Design shoulder strap. The quick release prodect is outstanding and such a joy to use in the field. Thanks for this video.

I've owned the promedia Lbracket for a coupe of years now, and it's just fantastic. Its bulky, but not intrusive, and it's comfortable with and without the battery grip. So much that I find myself forgetting to take it off

This is what I was looking for. I have been using RRS brackets for years and have been happy with them. But I'm purchasing a Canon R5 and one of the primary reasons is the articulating screen. I was disappointed to learn that the RRS L-bracket interfered with the screen and came to RU-vid to see if someone had produced a video just like this one. And someone had. You! Thanks.

I had an L bracket with the “cut out” like the RRS one but found that I was marking the flip out screen if it touched the ends of the cut out. Probably I should have been more careful but felt that over the time that I intend to keep the camera paying the extra for the PMG bracket would be worth it.

OK I wasn't going to buy it base off another review but now I will. From the low angle all I needed was that I can flip it out from the ground just like you did and that's good enough for me. Slap on a lcd screen protector to keep off the scratches. All is good now. Will order it soon and lay it down. Big thanks man, the slider on the RRS was meant to be that way it's not a flaw, it's replaceable.

The Markins one seems to be a cool design. There just appears to be one problem: the L portion is probably too short to be compatible with the quick release clamp of a FleXShooter ball head.

Very good video, I agree with your comparison of these three, however, I think the RRS also has a magnetic Allen wrench attachment as well. None of these were available when I got my R5 and I found another great bracket, the SmallRig L Bracket. It’s similar to the ProMedia without the forward protrusion but amazingly it was only $29 delivered directly from China. It works great at a bargain price. I found it on eBay but I think it’s available elsewhere now.

Yes, the RRS bracket does have a small magnetized wrench. I actually cut that from the video for time because it's visible in some of the b-roll. In general, the magnets are super strong. Great design.

Great video Todd, I have a EOS R and was wondering if these would work on it. I also have a 100-500 RF lens which by the way is mazing! How would you use the L bracket on this lens since this is a very heavy lens and is designed to use the collar to mount the lens on the tripod as apposed to mounting the camera ?
@thomsonlaurie
@thomsonlaurie 3 года назад
By loosening the collar on the lens and turning the lens, that also turns the camera to the portrait orientation. Isn't that a neat tip? An instructor told me that as I was struggling to switch things around 'normally'.

A fourth option worth mentioning is the Markins LC-R5 L-bracket. Markins is at least as good as RRS (in terms of fit and finish) but with an emphasis on lightweight, low profile designs. The LC-R5 weighs about 1/3 of the ProMediaGear bracket (95g vs 267g) and uses the same technique of shifting the (removable) vertical bracket forward and out of the way. Its one compromise is that the vertical bracket requires your clamp to be rotated 90 degrees-easily addressed by adding a rotating clamp to your head (if it doesn't already have one). Markins no longer has a North American distributor but the clamp can be shipped to the US from Europe for around $6 for a total cost of about $135. It’s worth checking out. It's also worth noting that the RRS and Sunwayfoto brackets not only limit the use of the flippy screen but make it *very* easy to damage the screen when it is rotated inside the bracket.
@quietpersona
@quietpersona 3 года назад
Thank you so much for this info Timothy. Do you think it wasn't possible to design the Markins LC-R5 so that the clamp doesn't require rotating it 90 degrees? That's a bit of a deal breaker for me. I wish it was the same low profile design but didn't require that compromise.
@timothylinn
@timothylinn 3 года назад
@@quietpersona I agree completely, Anthony. I don't know why Markins couldn't have designed it so that the compromise wasn't necessary. I've asked them but have not received an answer. It may have something to do with the 1/4-20 thread integrated into the vertical plate. If so, I would have certainly eliminated this feature before compromising the design. That said, if light weight, low profile, and unhindered LCD movements are all important to you, the Markins bracket is hard to beat. A rotating clamp is a simple solution that can be added to any head and offers other functional benefits as well. For me, that's better than the alternative which is the ProMediaGear bracket at over half a pound! (9.44 oz) Your priorities may be different.
@timothylinn
@timothylinn 3 года назад
@@bl8550 Yep. That is what I was trying to communicate in my own comment. I still use it because all my heads have the ability to easily rotate the top plate-but it is a PITA. You have to wonder what Markins was thinking.

When I get a new camera, I order a new Really Right Stuff L-Bracket specifically for that camera. Never had a piece fall out, and it come with a magnetic carry for a Allen wrench. I don't know which model you bought, Universal maybe? I use a really right stuff camera strap (Magpul MS4 Dual QD Sling Gen 2) that just plugs into a hole in the L-Bracket or lens plate on large glass. So awesome, I love that feature. Anyway, I'd never buy a bargain L-Bracket, I'll continue to get the best = Really Right Stuff. Best ball-head, Great gear for setting up panoramas, too. I don't work for them LOL.

Hi Todd, Couple of questions: When using the ProMediaGear L-bracket when the vertical part is extended do you find it sturdy enough, I'm thinking when there are slight torsion and twist forces? (I understand when photographing in a vertical position from a tripod it's more stable to collapse it.) The other question is how easy is to change lenses when the vertical part is collapsed/pushed in, can one get the fingers in there to push the lens release button?
@mikeandjoannie

The ProMediaGear is very solid extended out (I'm using the battery grip version). I also find it very easy to change lenses with it, either from the front or via the opening in the L-bracket itself. Hope that helps!

I'm sorting out what to do for my R6. The only hesitation I have with the PMG is whether the offset will complicate camera positioning on the nodal point when switching orientation for panoramas. But, in the end, my conclusion is that it really is not a big issue. So, it seems PMG is probably the way to go.

Great video like all your others for sure! I was about to buy an L bracket from 3 Legged Thing for my R5 when I saw your video. One of my prime objectives to buy an L bracket is to have the ability to leave my BlackRapid Breath Sport shoulder strap attached to my camera and be able to attach a tripod, as well. BlackRapid recommends the 3 Legged Thing L bracket ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ec94fKbVErI.html. Looking at their new design for the R5, the "Roxie", the vertical section of the bracket doesn't look very substantial. I am worried about dangling my R5 and 70-200mm f2.8 from a single point on the vertical section of their bracket. So the question I have is do you think the ProMediaGear L bracket is strong enough to attach my strap to the vertical section of their bar and support my R5 and lens? Thanks in advance! Ed
