Hey aron I really enjoyed your video you specify everything and I love the way you get into details! I’d like to ask you I’m planning on going to Europe this summer and using my sleeping bag through the rest of the year in a pretty multiple temperature rating . I’ve considered Alpinelite . I saw you didn’t review it in any of your video’s, How do you like him? Would you recommend him the same as the other western mountaineering stuff? Thanks !

I have the very same bag and it is fantastic for autumn and winter here in southern Sweden. It features the best draught collar I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping under, and the zipper never snags. It is a beautiful, if tremendously pricey, piece of kit. Thanks for a great review.

I have this bag. Absolutely fantastic bag. To people who think this bag is too warm, too hot in summer...I live in Calgary Alberta Canada. We get warm during the day, chilly at nite. Just unzip and lay it over you as a quilt and its comfortable in 18c temp. Having said that, it's great at -15 with long johns. Ty for your great expertise.

Why watch the polished influencers set their gear up on a table and tell you the specs listed on the website when you can watch Aaron wriggle himself inside the bag, zip it up, and actually get a useful idea of how lofty and warm it really is. :) Thanks for all your authentic content.

For Kilimanjaro, would you recommend the Versalite or the Antelope? I understand there’s little to choose between the two. I think I like the micro fiber material of The Antelope, but wonder if the weight savings and smaller packing size would make the Versalite a better value for future cold weather backpacking.

Does anyone have trouble with durability of these ultra light mimicrofiber fabrics of the western mountaineering bags?
@hikeroutpost
@hikeroutpost Год назад
@@ryaniam22 They are very popular so they seem to be durable enough, of course you should still take care of it and not be rough as it’s still a lightweight fabric. For example when I stuff my microfibre bag into the stuff sack I don’t worry about it ripping.

Is there any detail about the material they use for the outer and inner? Is it thermal layer such as eider or something? Have you review about omni heat layer for inside layer? Is it really working? Does the material, except the down ofcourse, can make any difference for the warmth of the sleeping bag?

The GWS will likely keep you a tiny bit warmer but I'd primary rely on the temp rating of the bag.

Have you tried the WM Ultralite? If so, did you find significant difference in warmth given that some of the extra down will be taken up by the greater width 59” versus 62”. I have a Summerlite and are deciding whether to opt for the Ultralite or Versalite (if the former is a lot more packable). Whether it would be better to have the Summerlite, Ultralite and then a warmer bag such as the Antelope or Lynx. I wonder if the Ultralite may be a good UK winter bag for most of the time and that if it’s colder then someone warmer than the Versalite will be better. Therefore the Versalite being too big a pack for much of the time, yet not good enough at other times. Therefore falling between two stools. Sorry for the long message.
@ALinsdau
@ALinsdau 2 года назад
I've used the Ultralight - great bag. My main summer bag is the megalite. The span of only 5 deg F doesn't make much difference other than than a slightly warmer bag being useful in light winter conditions.

Aaron: when you were measuring the loft by pushing a metal ruler into the bag until you hit the floor - aren't you actually measuring the loft of both the upper layer AND the lower layer. When you are in the bag, the fill beneath you will squish to nothing - so shouldn't you be dividing that number by 2? If so, it falls short of the claimed 6 inches. thanks - Doug
@ALinsdau
@ALinsdau 3 года назад
There's an interesting discussion here: backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/5625/ The loft of the bag below you doesn't not totally squish. It envelopes me, depending on my sleep position. The Versalite bottom part of the bag definitely doesn't squish where I'm not laying on it.. I use the full bag as a total comparison to try and be consistent. I was lucky I didn't tear the bag with a metal ruler, too.

@@ALinsdau Aaron: Thanks for taking the time to reply. I wasn't sure I would get a response on an older video like this one. And thanks for the link, too. I was thinking after I posted that comment that the "loft" is probably the loft of the whole bag, not just what is above you when you are in it. I have a bag that the manufacturer claims has 5 inches of loft. There is now way that it stands 10 inches when all fluffed up. One other question: You said if you are 6 foot tall, get the 6'6'' bag. I am 5 10-1/2. What is your recommendation? 6' or 6'6''? Thanks again Doug

Just found out that WM has a Bag Expander (three season) available. Perhaps I will try that option first. Black wedge shape that adds 16 cm at shoulders. Only minus is that it is produced in 6'0" length, so my 6'6" bag will have a gap. Outer fabric is MF.

850 FPS is not best down. 900fp is better. And you are asking for trouble using metal ruler with sharp corners. My son split his western Mountaineering bag open with sharp belt buckle.
@ALinsdau
@ALinsdau 4 года назад
There is some question on the market in the 800-900 fill power down if the measurements are "accurate." There was a debate a few years ago about the measurement. I haven't seen too many items with true 900 fp. Do you have some links? I'd love to see them. Yes, you're right...I didn't think about the sharp corner on the ruler until after I was done with the video.

@@ALinsdau Western conservatively rates their fill power at 850 plus, but it often tests in labs well over 900. They consider 850 the real-world conditions number, if that makes sense.
