Liam has been my de facto fictional Pirate captain now for quite a while. He beat out Artur, even though I still love his content. Artur is a solid Zoro to Liam's Luffy.

I want a comparison to alita. I think until now Alita Battle Angel is the best live action MANGA adaption ever done. Its case is similar to One Piece. It was given a massive budget, a big name producer was involved and unlike other series it didn't have a massive fandom that could hyper scrutinize everything before it came out.

@@ashofaphoenix I haven’t seen Alita so I can’t speak to that. But what I can say is this first episode had the same amount of love and respect that was poured into high quality, high production IP adaptations. Harry Potter, the MCU films (the golden age ones lol), the Mandalorian. This was made by people who love and respect the source material. At least to me it came off that way when watching it. And you’ll have to just take my word for it but I went in with zero expectations. As little biased as possible. I’m a massive fan, I read and watch this thing week to week. I have a strawhat mouse pad and a lil luffys scattered throughout my apartment, on bookshelves, hanging off a shot glass, in display cases…I love this property so much, it means so much to me, it’s my Star Wars. (And I love Star Wars too lol) I have enjoyed all the promotional stuff, I think the cast felt great when they were first announced, but even leading up to this event I’ve been very neutral on the whole thing. If I had any expectations or predictions it was that this show will be fine, it would be passable. I was not expecting it to be great, and gosh darn it it was!!! (In my opinion) I was sitting on the pier floor, there were helicopters buzzing around us, and despite all that I was smiling and laughing the entire time. The level of quality in the visuals, the writing/humor, the action…Helmeppo was one of the best things…I’ll leave that at that 😂 I’m not even going to compare this to dragon ball evolution lol This had so much heart, more heart than I’ve seen in most of the recent big budget tent pole movies. Ghost in the Shell had cool visuals but missed the point, the philosophy, it tried turning that IP into another superhero property. One Piece delivered, that team understood the assignment and executed it brilliantly. It felt like they took the soul and essence of One Piece and brought it to life in a way that felt unique for live action. I can not wait to watch the rest, I cannnnot wait to see my boy SANJI! And USOPP!!!

I’ll say one final thing. I love comic book superheroes as much as I love manga/anime. I’ve watch a ton of comic book movie/T.V. Show adaptions, all the marvel stuff, some DC, some indie. Spider-man is one of my favorite heroes and fictional characters. When I was a kid, and the very first Spider-man movie came out in theaters, the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi one, I remember feeling such a sense of excitement. I was trembling with joy and this was one of the first times in my life that I got a little teary watching this thing on the big screen, this amazing character I grew up loving, finally he was brought to life in a new form. I felt that exact same way at the screening…

Alice in Borderland is fantastic as well. Possibly the best adaptation. Alita and GitS (yes, I stand behind it) are also really good.

@@BreadCatMarcus ghost in the shell is very good and should been praised for the step forward it was to Anime Live Action. It was given bad press by asian americans, (i am asian american) that were butt hurt about Scarlett Johansen being cast as the MC. It pisses me off because they were actually faithful to th cannon (she is known to look more western for canonical reasons) and there is no shortage of Asians being cast for major and minor roles through out that film.

i dont think it will be because that an another character in the movie=more money spent, but i would like and think it would be funny if this will happen

This is way too close to accurate. For as much as people have criticized the pacing up front, they put about 100 chapters in half the screen time the anime used to cover that same content. If they stick to this same rate of 100 chapters for a season, we're looking at 10 seasons to get through Wano, at which point the manga would still be 6 years of additional content ahead of the show. This is my biggest worry for the show actually, it doesn't seem like it can move quickly enough to finish at a rate where it's realistic to keep the cast together to get through everything.

@@phonyalias7574 the east blue is only 50 episodes in the anime, so 20 years would be spot on, but they can probably cut stuff, the reason one piece is so long is becuse the crew always get divided and every one of them get a minarc, if they can slim on the less important stuff or if they do more episodes for season or both they could probably do it in 10 years

@@alexmercer9649 Yes, 50 episodes/100 chapters. Those 50 episodes are a bit over 19 hours long. 100 chapters or half the anime screen time, either metric works out about the same. The chapter metric is better though since it's very unlikely they would include any filler.

@@alexmercer964910 years lol, unless everyone ages well then this series won’t last long. Luffy is supposed to be 19 and the season 2 will probably come out in 2-3 years since the series just gets bigger in scope from here.

It sounds like, with One Piece and The Last of Us, adaptation crews are starting to get the hint that the original writers need to be heavily involved to make it really work. I hope this trend continues because we've gotten some absolutely rotten takes on beloved properties in the recent past *stink-eyes Death Note*

@@Snow_Weaveryeah I think people learned their lesson when the author of the Percy Jackson books called out the crew who made the movies and very much denies the movies as his creation due to how bad they are with Greek myth and as an adaptation to his book

I think unless its slice of life you only ever get negatives from making an anime live action and same for vice versa, only really positives if you adapt fantasy live action into an anime. Can create a more stylised world much cheaper if animated, not restricted by locations and budget as much or actors and casting. Don't have to include shoddy scorpion king cgi.

100% agree, everyone has different tastes so what makes the show great for some people may make others dislike it

I'm expecting something like we're starting to see in some anime where it tries to hit the same core plot points but has very different transitions between them. That way it keeps the big parts of the story, but offers something new for everyone like an alternate canon, and gives the show creators a lot more flexibility. From how they're merging characters, plot lines, and arcs it looks like that's how this show will go.

Yeah, over hype and over expectations can kill anything regardless how good it actually ends up being, I still have zero expectations though because of how much all past live action adaptations disappointed me so I could end up enjoying it a lot if its good, or even just for what it is.

they had a screening of the first episode last night at santa monica pier and a ton of fans went to watch and said it exceeded their expectations!

Oda was very hands on with the show. Hand picked every single person. After running his manga house for so long and working with toei he’s gotten a lot of experience. He prolly also got some help from his friends who made other live action adaptations in Japan. Mackenyu who plays zoro has done many live action animes lawl.

@@GiRR007 True. However, he did choose Inaki (Luffy) because his audtion tape was the only one that made him laugh. As stated by his various messages about the show over the past months, he also described the process of making the series, so cholkymilk is kind of creating fakenews up there. Let me correct a few things: Oda and Netflix/Tomorrow Studios's ideas collided multiple times over the years and Netflix told him from the start that a 1:1 recreation is impossible. "Live action is about expression and not replication". Oda said that they all wanted the same goal, all had the same vision in mind but it was rocky and not easy at all because he is a mangaka and does not have experience in making live action works and Netflix/Tomorrow is all about making Live action and not manga. Still, he demanded scenes to be reshot, whenever he felt that they weren't good enough. Additionally, it was important "to not betray the fans". One Piece LA is to hook people, who otherwise do not follow the manga and anime and not to repell the fans in the same process. These things can be read in every message Oda has made in the past months and there are summaries that can be found. The Showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda (Long time fans of One Piece) forced the entire production team to read the first 100 chapters of the manga. For everyone, not just the actors. All production staff had to read them. Matt Owens is the one that brought the deal with Oda, after telling him what One Piece meant to him and how it helped him through a difficult time in his life. Huge difference to Cowboy Bebop whose team and showrunners didn't even finish episode 1 and the creator not being involved with the show and many problems during production. I think one of the core guys behind the production left it in the middle of it(?) but I'm not sure about it.

Right?? Personally, I kinda hoped they would make it more like an actual chin replacement with parts of it connected to flesh rather than how it looks like it's just screwed on over his chin. But honestly, that's not going to bother me that much. But yeah, I really hope they pull off some gandalf/hobbit scale magic in the coming seasons.

I think the only problem with Arlong us that it was close to impossible to make him as intimidating as his manga counterpart. Sure, making him bigger would've helped but every One Piece character has exaggerated expressions which play a big role in making characters scary or goofy. LA Luffy doesn't have his iconic overly wide smile but inaki still pulls off Luffy and Arlong doesn't have his exaggerated facial features, which actually makes his design suffer more

I bet we'll get an highly-produced orchestral score of the original laced through the series as a leitmotif, but I doubt we'll get an anime-style intro with shots of the crew and such. I imagine we won't get much of an intro at all with the amount of ground to cover in the 8 episode run. Those are precious minutes to deliver juicy content!

In the start im 90% sure we all thought he was king cuz of the one piece, we didn't know how truly strong and capable he was in comparison to the average pirate which cant even scale up to a decent marine

Setting a ceiling isn't inherently bad or devaluing others. Hell, that's the entire reason why Mihawk (arguably the strongest Warlord) is the first one to appear rather than the last like it happens often in Anime.

Because any bounty update in the show will be undermined by the comparison. What we thought was insane bounty jumps for Luffy will not hit the same for a first time watcher, if they already know the ceiling that is Roger's bounty.

@@entrigamo nah. Judging from the trailers and the whole idea of it. One Piece's character designs and personalities like Luffy are quite hard to adapt in real life, it doesn't translate well just like how anime character designs/reactions/attitudes doesn't translate well in real life, its not for anyone. The only people who I can think of enjoying this are One Piece fans. There will be small amount of non-OP fans watching this but a big amount of OP fans watching this. Thats why I think Rurouni Kenshin still hold the best Live-action adaptation of all time, Because there's a decent amount of groundedness.

recent Koby is great though. Early Koby can be kinds annoying but I don't think he's a bad character. He's actually pretty important early on to break the image of 'marine good pirate bad'

He might become the new fleet admiral for all I care, but he'll still be a naive lawful stupid whiny character.
