"A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century" by Barbara Tuchman, would fit well in your list

Yeah that’s a good one too. I’ve read it but not sure if I’ve put it on any lists yet

I bought Medieval Bodies so I could enjoy the pictures. 😂 I really want Empires of the Normans but I am waiting for a good deal second hand. I haven't picked up Lost Heirs for different reasons but your review makes me think I should pick it up. Great video!

Have you seen Jackson Crawford's channel? He's a linguist and scholar of the Vikings. He's written a few books. Simon Roper is good too. He does a lot of videos on the history of the English language, and some of his videos would fit into middle ages topics.

I think I’ve seen him once or twice. I listened to his Great Courses lecture series on Norse mythology. Definitely very knowledgeable

Love your videos! Do you have/ plan on making similar videos for early modern history books? Kinda difficult to find any content on those; most people focus on either medieval or ancient history.

Unfortunately not much. I've found a lot of booktubers who doe modern history and American/European history but not many for early modern era. The Renaissance era is when I tap out usually. I've read some in the era afterward but not many. I used to read quite a bit of World War One history as the exception. However the Historathon event I'm taking part in this year will focus on the modern and early modern eras halfway through the year and I might branch out a bit for that. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

This is why I can't watch you consistently! I always find myself picking up least one book when I watch one of your videoes! I had to purchase "The Wolf Age" this time (I've been wanting to read a good book on Viking history), but "Empire of the Normans" is thankfully available at my library and I already own "The Forgotten Heirs of the Medieval Crown". I need to just learn self-control because I really do enjoy your content. Those books sound great! As for good medieval books, I found myself really enjoying "The Templars" by Dan Jones last year. I really knew very little about the Templars beforehand and the book did much to rectify the gaps in my knowledge in this area. It not only explained the tragedy in a way that sticks with me, but it helped explain how the Babylonian exile of the Pope in France came about. I had never really seen a book that has explained that well and was grateful that this book did. Two other books that I really enjoyed that were set more in Elizabethan/Stuart eras were "Maids, Wives, & Widows" & "Maladies & Medicine" -- both by Sara Read. If you like your slice-of-life type history books, these definitely fit the bill. I thought that "Maladies & Medicine" was particularly enjoyable. I was a nurse for 10 years and I had fun playing "guess the malady" and "figure out why that treatment may have unexpectedly worked". 😁 The Historathon is going to be great! I will definitely be trying to get "The Wolf Age" & "Empire of the Normans" in next quarter. I've rarely seen mention made of the Normans who focused their efforts more on Italy, etc; like you said, the French Normans tend to get all the attention. Thanks for the great book suggestions!

Yeah I got to read more of Dan Jones for sure. Glad your finding my recommendations decent. I'll definitely look into the 2 that you mentioned for good social histories!

@@TriumphalReads social histories can run the risk of being dry, imho, since not much is always known about the average Joe. It's always nice to find a well-written one. I hope that you find Sara Read's work to be as interesting as I do.

WE APPY FEW, the story of an old man recounting his time during the battle of Agincourt, is a great novel. Its funny and moving, and makes you realize nothing much has changed.

I’ve been slowly listening to Dan Jones’ Powers and Thrones (which as a beginner I am having so much fun with), and all of the stuff on the Normands is indeed super interesting! (I’m also fascinated by the franks and their influence in western culture). As for the Vikings, well, I was spoiled with my introduction to them as it was SO much fun, and I’m going to sound like a broken record because I’ve talked about it ad nauseum 😂 but CHILDREN OF ASH AND ELM 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 (I won’t stop till everyone reads it 😂😂😂)

Lol it’s on my radar haha. I’ve read like a dozen Norse/Viking books but still looking for the definitive one so maybe that’s it. I’ve read Sunmer of Blood by Dan Jones and enjoyed it

Thanks for the recommendation of "Children of Ash & Elm"; I'm going to check that out right now. There goes my New Year's resolution to only read what I own (again)... Although, tbh, that resolution was doomed for failure from day one...

I really don't hardly read fiction ever any more but it would likely be Children of Hurin or The Hobbit by Tolkien, The Sword in the Stone by T H White, and maybe Don Quixote by Cervantes.
