Comments MUST be related to these engines only. I realize there are other engines produced during this period, but I could not show them all. I will let you hear each engine run and you can decide which one you like best.
With the help from Kent and the Mercedes Source team I managed to save a 1974 240D W115 with the four cylinder no nonsense (or DEF) engine from scrap pile. After a few videos, a couple of weekends of wrenching, and a few choice words Berta the Benz is now tougher than a boiled owl. An indestructible machine which is a hoot to drive and admittedly a whole lotta cool to be seen in. 👍. Thank you Mercedes Source
Of course the first one! those 300TD's are terrific cars! Sadly gave mine up many years ago due to transmission issues. But I'm partial to the 116 in the 380SL since that's what I've kept running for quite a few years now.
Not in one of the shown cars. But the best Daimler Benz engine ever made is of course the 72 hp 240 Diesel (W123). Good for 1 million kilometres (if maintained regularly). Best regards, luck and health in particular.
The old diesel is definitely my favorite because it's the best! Economical and long lasting is my style so I definitely have a biased view of this comparison.
#2 inline 6 is the best engine ever produced by Mercedes it was so good they stopped making it! I had it in my 1993 S320 lots of room to work on and oil changes were a breeze as well as changing spark plugs because it’s a straight six inside a hood that can hold a V-8. The gas economy was pretty good on it. I own that car for about six years. Later I own day 2003. S 430 small V8 I drove that car for 11 years and only had one suspension piece that was squeaking. I didn’t touch anything under the hood or the transmission nothing absolutely zero and the car when I sold it had 180,000 miles of flawless perfection very smooth highway car I would buy that car again most definitely I was getting about 27 to 30 miles per gallon on the freeway doing 70! Number three sounded very smooth as well. A little quieter than number two, but I’m just in love with the straight six whether it’s diesel or gasoline. Thank you for your fun video. It brings back memories. My last Mercedes was a 2014 550CLS TwinTurbo which is really a fantastic car if you don’t put your foot in it and in that car I got 29 to 30 miles per gallon on the freeway.
Yeap, nevertheless, if less parts to fix, more years trouble-freed. I have 2 x W123 300D and if properly cared, you can run them for over 500K Kilometers without any concerns... Not as responsive uphill as the turbocharged, but safe enough for long distances in a comfortable seat the size of my reclinable couch....@@Mercedessource
OM617 is best for me. I can never really get over the sound. We have a 300CD non-turbo and I love everything about it. In the near future I plan on getting a 300D turbodiesel.
The Diesel is my favorite of those you presented. Overall, the M113 V8 is my favorite Mercedes Engine for both performance and reliability. Not bad on economy either.
So true… I love M113’s especially the M113K and super easy to work on… i have the V12 M275… amazing smooth engine but a 🤬 to work on. 👍🏼… M119 also 👍🏼👌
Thr mystery car is a W140 with an M119. Could be a 4.2 or a 5.0. Great car, great engine. I have a 92 W124 400E and a 94 W140 S500. I also have a 95 S500 engine sitting on a stand, about to go in a special project.
The 3.0 TD inline fives are hard to beat, all mechanical, good mpg, strong highway cruisers, and can run on about any fuel combo. I think the newer 1990s SL is modified.
The bonus car is the M119 in a W140 S500. Aside from the OM617, I liked the start of the M130 in the 280SL. The 300TD looks like an off-white or light ivory (Hellelfenbein). Looks like the R129 300SL has had later clear turn signals added.
I dont know the models but the 300TD but far far and hands down best engine is the OM617 Turbo Diesel in the 300TD. I think car #4 is the modified one.
1) Which car is "a bit off"? - I'm thinking it's got to be that 123 wagon on the left. It's a more creamy white than the SLs. It's also got white fog lights, when they are normally yellow. Possibly the SL320 could count as a bit off as the passenger's headlight wiper is not in the correct resting position. I think the wagon is the car, and it's a 1983 300TD. 2) Which engine sounds the best? - For me it has to be either the 280SL because it reminds me of an old airplane motor a little bit, or really, I think the SL320 as it sounds exactly like my E320 wagon, that 3.2 M104 is just so familiar to me. 3) What is the mystery engine and car? The engine is an M119 for sure. And the car is going to be a W140. I'm 100% confident on those two facts. I suppose it could be a 420SEL, it's hard to say from the video alone, but I feel like the 500s are much more common so I'm going to go with a 500SEL out of pure likelihood.
I’ll say that’s the cream 83/84/85 ? 300td takes the cake ! Me personally I like a OM 606 n.a. Or Turbo 🙂… but there was a 6cyl TD they offered in the US in 87 only … a gem 💎 😉
The color seems to be off on the 1978ish 300TD wagon, the grille on the red SL (1980’s 560?) is darker/newer, the wagon’s diesel runs flawlessly, however my favorite is the 3.2 I6 from the white 320SL. The last engine looked like a 5.0 V8 from a mid ‘90’s 500 SL. Sorry, not too familiar with the engine and chassis codes.
Mercedes Benz Inline 6s are undeniable. I have an M104 in my C Class and smoothness is otherworldly. Sometimes you don't even realise the car is running lol. That being said I will be going with the 300SL-24V and a close second would be an M119 V8, second revision.
Mystery car looks like a W140 S500 - with the M119 and LH fuel injection. My favorite is the diesel! The W123 shown is great, but for all models EVER (ex: not shown) I'm mostly loving the W124 and W126 with the OM603 🥰M104 is also a great engine though (like the one shown in the 300SL / SL320). Not so much the CIS ones (as shown), but the HFM ones.
Sound-wise I chose the Pagode. Don't know which version that is, but the early IL6 had this dramatic sound (Hey, you, get out of the way, I'm a Benz!!). Our family W108 280SE had it as well, back in the 80ties. The M110 engine also had it, at the later engines they cancelled the sound (as far as I remember). My CLK with the M112 V6 definitely has no real sound at all, but I don't need that anymore.
