Also I didn't even say Blackwater Park was their best album. Still life is probably my favourite by them. Doesn't mean that blackwater park isn't ridiculously good.
I'll take Aenima ALL DAY, EVERYDAY. I've lost interest in waiting on their NEW album. 13 years? Seriously? They're a good band, but not THAT good. Axl Rose called, he wants his punctuality back. Love them, but come on....13 years?
sydIRISH well yeah, 1. Adam Jones didn’t want his music to just be purchased without any credit to him 2. So much legal hassle prevented tool from releasing an album or even a song, it was THAT BAD
I agree, it pales in comparison to it's nothing like predecessors, it's trying to be too different but it's not convincing, too flat. I mean, they play really well, but doesn't have the same punch as Undertow or Aenima. @@nicholasromig5506
I love Tool and in my my opinion this album deserves a perfect 5/5 rating but I respect your opinion. I just realised that all my favourite bands released their best album in the year I was born - Converge, Tool and Opeth
I found it interesting that you did not mention 9/11 affecting sales of, just to name one, SOAD which was a very anti-system band and heavily political; and was pretty much stripped out of radios in the wake of a new wave of patriotism caused by the terrorist attack.
@@Albiorix yeah, they were a very mainstream band. I like them a lot but people got sick of them because they were so overplayed on modern rock radio stations and MTV. Pretty good myth they have going there, I'm sure it's true that in places like Salt Lake City they didnt get as much airtime.
Gotta agree that that is just not true for the NYC area. You couldn't escape hearing SOAD. I heard it all the time, everywhere. Strangely mainstream. There was hardly any heavy rock/metal on radio at that time, but SOAD was a glaring exception.
My Top 5 for 2001: (Toxicity from System is an Honorable Mention, while I love that album, it just doesn't fit with pure METAL... it is more experimental music to me. Toxicity is up there with these 5 albums as it is great imo.) 5. Behemoth - Thelema 6 4. Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business 3. Kreator - Violent Revolution 2. Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising 1. Absu - Tara
What the fuck, Brad. Shitting all over three of my favorite albums. But I liked the review nevertheless, I think it takes guts telling people that you don't like system or tool, and after all we're all watching this for opinions. So keep up the good work in 2019! Edit: Mutter is like the best album with German lyrics I know. Glad the patreons voted for it!
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 No album deserves a minimum rating objectively because music is entirely subjective. Stop acting like everyone has to like something just because you like it. It's his own subjective take on the album and he's done nothing wrong by putting it out there. Get over it. Not everyone has to like Tool.
@@Vixen5290_ You completely disqualified yourself there. "Not everyone has to like Tool." Exactly. I'm not a big fan of Tool myself. But I can see when music is well made. This album deserves "at least 4/5" not because I like it but because of its craftsmanship. Don't give me this "everyone has the right to their opinion" crap. Yes, they do, but an "opinion" is not a "critique"! I really fucking hate that less and less people seem to know the difference between these.
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 "Don't give me this 'everyone has their right to an opinion' crap." Okay so everyone DOESN'T have a right to their own opinion? lmao.
It cant be understated how seminal this record is. It came out just before Metalcore really got its footing and gained so much popularity. Despite that it technically is a Metalcore album, it also avoids everything that would make a Metalcore album cliché i.e. constant breakdowns, cheesy clean vocals, etc. Its just full speed energy and anger in an amazing package. Also, my fave album of all time. \m/
To each their own. Love Opeth . 4/5 of the albums I think are great. Could never get into Converge. That would be the 2.5 for me. Everyone has the metal they like
Slipknots debut went platinum in May of 2000 Bloody Kisses in December of 2000. Slipknot were first but Type O just behind. Type O did have Roadrunners first Gold album
Brad mate! You’re my favorite reviewer on banger. I glad that you review things the way that you see they should be reviewed as. Sadly a lot of others on banger review something and sound like they hate it but they know that other people like it so they give a better score. I think a review should reflect the persons personal opinions not everyone else’s.
Lateralus is much more than just music. It's above musicianship. It takes time to embrace it. It's a point of view, a state of mind. It's not about riffs and double bass... Not about vocal performance or guitar solos. It reflects on the human being as a collective. It's... a journey. It's more like a feeling that you can get by spending that 1 hour and 20 minutes with it. I've listened to Lateralus more then 100 time sin my life, but it can still give me something new every time. So please take the time with that album, sit down and just listen to it. Don't do anythign else. Just pay attention. Because that 2.5 can't be true...
Yep that Designated Shirloster guy, it's one of those guys TRVE guys that says tha if it's not Death Metal or something extreme it's crap, and I think that the commentary above it's exaggerated, but I agree that Lateralus it's a really hard to listen album that you need a few really deep listens to appreciate it more.
I understand your feelings on Lateralus, even though it's one of my favorite albums ever. Let's be honest with ourselves though, we all knew Blackwater Park would be #1
"How can Brad give 2.5 skulls to Lateralus?" Well, that's how: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sBwYijkF6No.html When the voting started, you already knew that Brad would be reviewing the albums. That is, you wanted him to review these albums. So, when he analyzes the albums according to his own musical taste, what is the problem? If he simply repeated what has been said about Lateralus up to now by other music journalists, then what is the point in making Overkill Rewind? As soon as that Tool album got into the list, I knew this comment section would be full of Tool fans arguing that if some people don't like Tool, it's because they don't understand their work. A claim that despises other people's intellectual capacity by default, just based on their musical tastes. I've never seen a fanbase more irritating than this. Maybe The Last Jedi fans?? Nah, Tool fans are more annoying.
Thanks my friend! Yeah, I ain't going to say something is great just because everyone else said it's great. Music should elicit emotions and this made me feel next to nothing...too clinical. That's why it's impossible for music (or art in general) to be reviewed objectively because even if something is technically perfect, that doesn't mean it speaks to someone.
Wow! 2.5 for one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Well opinions are opinion and while I strongly disagree with Brads I respect it. Even though he is obviously wrong ;)
Oh Brad, here's the thing I'm not like the stereotypical Tool fan that you speak of and Laturalus is one of my favorite albums of all time and yes it's a thinker but really the thing is about Tool and why this album is essential is how they managed to craft something that manages to be so complex while being so simple simultaneously and why it is worthy of repeated listens. This is an all honesty the perfect album in terms of being a gateway to all that is of modern (maybe some classic)prog rock and prog metal in general and why so many Alt-metal bands have tried and failed to capture what there about (and yet somehow those bands are good enough to get me by until next Tool cycle figure that shit😒). You are right about one thing for sure and that's how Danny Carrey plays that fucking kit! Without bands like Tool I wouldn't have bothered with bands like Opeth or Messhuggah or even Devin Townsend for that matter. All an all 2001 seems like it was a great year for gateways in metal despite most Numetal bullshit!
I literally gasped at the Lateralus review... That is just sinful lol. But I understand it's your opinion, but holy shit. I thought you would have at worst gave it a 3 and a half skulls. Wow. Not butthurt, but in shock.
or maybe he was the perfect guy, because overall Metal quality between 1993-2003 or so was very..... hit and miss? While we had Death, Sigh, Opeth, etc, the more popular stuff, like SotD? Really had a lot more in common with Alt Rock then the overall Metal vibe. Not bad, but not really the same animal. (I mean, I love Soundgarden, but don't consider most of their stuff "Metal".) Was a lot of kind of follow the leader stuff in that era. Yes the 80s had Glam, etc, but also had they heyday of most of the titans of the genre. I'm happy Metal is alive and well and getting more diverse, but there was a solid decade, especially if you weren't in Europe... where Metal was... kind of crap. At the same time, it doesn't desrve the TRVE BS, either, as there were bands like Korn, Sevendust, Slipknot, etc, who really did define something new. Even if it wasn't maybe what certain crowds were looking for. Then again, all art is subjective. For me the 90s and early 00s were a pretty bleak and depressing time in music. I tend to find a huge chunk of what was spawned (NuMetal, Metalcore, Modern Melodeath, Post Grunge, etc) very very generic and samey sounding so often. Thankfully we have tons of Progressive, Folk tinged, Blackened, Technical and other bat crap insane stuff to balance that with. Solo mi dos pesos.
@@killerpeaches7 I agree for the most but this was my era and is hard to let go. I actually thought I wasn't a metal fan by 2000 because I thought metal was pretty much only numetal and metalcore. Napster etc made me aware of European metal, black, melo-death, opeth. I just have two arguments for the nineties, besides the bands mentioned already by killerpeaches7. Pantera and Meshuggah. I cannot imagine metal without them.
Will never forget that Tuesday when I was very much looking forward to going to the record store over lunch break to get Slayer's new record on release day. But we all know what happened on that day, and working at a media company my job was very busy that week. Didn't get time to pick it up until Friday. Because of Sept 11 and a few other life events all the music from that year is burned into memory deeper than most other years - noteably Lateralus and Toxicity.
Tool's Lateralus is perfection. 2.5/5 stars is your bias and subjectivity taking over. You had to have grown with this band from 1991 and onward and watch and experience their progression from their 1991 demo to their 1992 EP to their first full length studio album in 1993 to their second full length album in 1996, to their live album in 2000 to their third full length studio album in 2001 to their FINAL full length studio album in 2006, to notice how they had evolved as musicians and people (on a very spiritual level).
So its his bias and subjectivity taking over when he gives it an average rating, but not biased or subjective when youve been a fan following them since their inception in 1991.... so you dont think that maybeee youre a little biased here?

Im so happy that: 1. Brad has the exact same issues with Tool that I have and didnt praise them for being “super-intellectually complex mathematical genius Gods”. I like Tool dont get me wrong, but I honestly couldnt give two shits if the music has all this mathematical stuff in it. We get it Maynard. You’re smart. 2. Iowa made it to the list. I was totally anti-Slipknot but im so glad I gave them a chance and now they’re one of my favorite bands. Cant wait till their new stuff drops this year
Darth SnewSnew Maynard has said that they never contemplated to write a song in the Fibonacci sequence. He never gave a shit about it. It just came out that way as they were writing it, they noticed it, and they rolled with it. If a bunch of pretentious intellectuals are drawn to Tool, that’s on them. Tool is a construct of several artistic individuals who are confident in their own creativity and don’t pay much attention to what anyone thinks of them. None of the members of the band flaunt their intellect. Tool is my favorite band, and yet I think Maynard’s fucking dumb. For example, he follows (or tries to follow) a keto diet, even though top medical and physiological scientists have repeatedly warned about its dangers. Only a person limited to understanding TV- and RU-vid-star doctors would fall for this.
That review of Lateralus is gold. I don't mind that album, but I remember thinking when it came out that it was a case of diminishing returns. To me, Aenema is their peak, although the production on Lateralus is outstanding. There seem to be two kinds of Tool fans: 1. People who think Tool brought something interesting to rock 2. People who compare everything to Tool, who assume that Tool invented 'progressive' rock. -Like, if they hear King Crimson, their response is, "They sound like Tool". Same thing with Danny Carey: great drummer no doubt, but not the first to play complex time signatures (he certainly wouldn't say he was). I'd give Lateralus a 3.5, and Aenema a 4.5. They still put on a great show, but I hope if they release a new album it sounds nothing like their back catalogue, because the last album sounds like they're stuck on repeat.
The only one of my picks to make the list was Opeth. Here's my top ten: 1. Devin Townsend - Terria 2. Neurosis - A Sun that Never Sets 3. W.A.S.P. - Unholy Terror 4. Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro 5. Bolt Thrower - Honour Valour Pride 6. Ackercocke - The Goat of Medes 7. Solefald - Pills Against the Ageless Ills 8. My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours 9. Slayer - God Hates Us All 10. Opeth - Blackwater Park
2001 was a good power metal year, it is a bit sad to see no representation. Power metal was not as big outside of Europe, so I'm not surprised. So for fun and to represents a little Power metal. Here's my top 5 Power metal albums of 2001: 1.Avantasia - The Metal Opera Part I 2.Angra - Rebirth 3.Edguy - Mandrake 4.Gamma Ray - No World Order 5.Sonata Arctica - Silence
That lateralus rating though.... The album is about so much more than just instruments and vocals. The amount of precision and technical skill displayed is something that only a handful of albums have been able to come close to. The fact that their album is so complex that people are still trying to decipher it shows what I mean. Either the band intentionally made it that way to mess with people and the album is meaningless or its not just shows the skill and talent involved.
Also gotta chime in on that tool review. I've Never cared about any theories people had about their music or what their fanbase was like (though my experience with fans of theirs was completely opposite of yours). They're just a combination of dudes that make great music together, and I think they're special because each member is irreplaceable imo. I kind of feel like Opeth and Tool are a natural combination /progression so I find it super weird to only like one. (unless you don't like extreme metal vocals)
The first platinum selling Roadrunner Records album is actually Bloody Kisses by Type O Negative, not the Slipknot album, FYI

I can relate on not giving a chance to Slipknot for sooo many years just because of their masks and the fact that many kids who had Slipknot shirts weren't even into metal they just liked it for the facade and their appearance... but then yeah, I grew the fuck up eventually and started listening to them and I genuinely like them now, and for the whole spectrum of their musicianship, from their softer songs to fucking Iowa. 🖤
I'm glad I'm not alone! I feel a lot of younger people liked them because of the masks, like it looked "cool," but I guess I was a little hipster and saw it as a gimmick. Glad we both learned to look past it.
Gimmicks are fine. Gwar, King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Iron Maiden made their careers on gimmicks. And the end of the day it's entertainment and what entertains you.
I forget. Was Jane Doe Ben Koller's first album with Converge? Because if so, that explains why the fills on "Homewrecker" are so good. That man is a beast. Easily one of the best drummers I've ever heard, but no one ever talks about him. It's always Jake's vocals and lyrics or Kurt's (and at this time Aaron Dalbec's) riffing and breakdowns, as well as his production. 2. I'll be honest, I didn't really like Iowa when it came out. I felt the more pop and more death metal elements didn't mesh as well on this one as it did on the self-titled. I always used to call it, "Death metal Backstreet Boys". Certain songs though, you can't deny how brilliant they are. "People=Shit" is just a banger. One of the most misanthropic "mainstream" metal songs, ever!
It was Ben's first album. Ben is the absolute shit. Such an energetic drummer who plays to the song without ever boring or overplaying. He rides the line SO well. Plus he looks like he's having a blast whenever he plays. Fair enough, my friend! I liked it better on 'Iowa' because the rappy elements had diminished.
To be fair, Brad is being fair to Tool and giving his opinion. Do I agree with him? Nope as Tool is awesome. However he did give legitimate reasons why he didn't like it. That being said, he still should've given it a 3 instead of a 2.5; Tool hasn't made material worthy of that rating.
I'm surprised that no one pointed out that Lateralus is best enjoyed while high. This guy is proudly straight edge, Tool is drug music, especially the "long meandering" sections. Also might have to do with why he doesn't like "weird music", I wonder his thoughts on Frank Zappa...
Jason, thank you! Someone commented that he only got Tool after he did acid. I was like, bro, I've never done that and never will. No wonder I don't like it?! Haha.
I am really surprised Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia from Dimmu Borgir did not even make it to the Top 10 :o Otherwise: I don't know if Brad's opinion is valid on Lateralus, however the guy did not sell out and gave his honest opinion, and that should be appreciated.
I can't comment on Bolt Thrower as I haven't listened to them enough, but to say God Hates Us All is a great album shows what a bad year 2001 was for metal.
Big fan of BangerTV and Overkill review but "Get to the point" when talking about Tool and System Of A Down influences from other music genres being "all over the place"... come on dude. Maybe not the best guy to review prog-like albums. 2.5/5 for lateralus :/
I fucking Love Tool they’re my favorite band, but you can’t deny the impact that Slipknot has had in 01’. They’re far from Nu-metal, yes I get it, “a DJ blaspheme,” but Sid actually fits very well in. And if Corey raps a tad bit, they’ve always had that tiny spark of influence. But understand they came out in a period in time when metal was getting formulaic and bland. And they basically turned the world upside down. Good day sir.
Liking the band Tool doesn't make one smart. I'm not saying they're a bad band, but being into them doesn't turn you into a Hunter S Thompson. I don't know why I feel the need to say that.
For some reason there is a weird disconnect between the younger generations and tool. I think it is like he said tool reminds him of certain fans and bands they influenced, disturbed etc. It is funny he mentions disturbed because their singer went from post punk to metal because of Maynard. I don't think there is any doubt tool is one of the most influential bands in history. I hear tool or tool like riffs all over the place, katatonia seems to be majorly influenced post 2000. Even cobalt has tool like riffs. What the kids, lol, don't seem to understand is there would be a vacuum where tool is and large portions of songs they like and even bands would be missing without their influence. At some point it became not cool to like tool which I find strange and disturbing. I think it's possible it is a guitar tone thing, too alt. If they had death or sludge tone it would be more accessible now. Tool made metal radio friendly enough in the nineties they would play their six minute songs in their regular hourly rotation, which at the time was mind blowing. A lot has changed in 20 years.
it's cute that you call Disturbed metal. if Tool is responsible for Dave Draiman starting disturbed, that's another black mark on their page of crimes.
@@nicholasromig5506 disturbed is nu metal dipsh*t. It's in the name. Probably the second biggest band in genre to Korn. I am not gonna teach you the history of metal. It's funny you thought it so important to bring up. Obviously it's a hangup. Pretty much nobody likes nu metal. Doesn't make you special or discerning. Learn your history.
I've always thought putting some cool touches into music is pretty nice, and using the Fibonacci sequence to build a song is pretty interesting. Too bad I find such song (and band) so boring. All the brainy stuff goes out of the window if the song makes me want to sleep.
@@Eichro Totally! You can definitely do interesting stuff. After the Burial did a breakdown where the pattern was the numbers of pi. Structures did a similar thing on a song called "Buried," where the coordinates where Walt buried the money in 'Breaking Bad' was the pattern they chugged, but those are more fun to listen to, whereas this is just up its own ass.
I'm one of the few that would say Undertow will always be Tool's best album. But to give lateralus a 2.5 is a joke. You should probably have someone review albums who lived them at the time and not have listened to two out of the five for the first time for this list. I'll continue to watch banger for laughs but credibility on music knowledge is out the window for me.
