As an electrician I will never blindly drill out holes like that dry wall is getting cut cuz I gotta know what's up there before I drill

yup, no telling if you got plastic water pipes, a bunch of wires stapled to the joist, ducting, or an A/C line from the furnace that you would drill through

And you definitely have to run a wire to that existing switch but if not and it was celing light there and if it a 2 story home with no attic you'll have to cut the sheetro

Better question is why are you still using recess cans versus the new slim fits. Recess can you gotta make sure you know we’re near any beams? Where with the slim fits you could be directly under beam and still install the light and it looks better than the cans.

@@jamiebozarth7461 I've been drawing building homes for 40 years (that's crazy) and you have a pretty good idea of what could be up there and where it is located. You've got to use your stud finder so you miss the ceiling joist and that gives you a fair idea of anything wider than 1-1/2" is there alongside the joists. But you could stick the camera into where you're going to run the hole saw before drilling. I'd say you can really limit the odds of hitting a pipe. There's still a chance but negligible. This man didn't have a choice as to fixture. I've gone to those slim 4"-6" LED and they don't need a lot of depth.

I wanna install new pot lights and I have a fairly good experience doing so in a new build, however, I am now trying to upgrade an existing room and not sure what would be the best way to run the wires. The room has two light fixtures in the ceiling obviously with own junction box for each. Each light fixture is controlled by a separate switch in that room while one of them is also controlled by another switch neat the stairs. I am also installing a dimmer switch with the pot lights. What's the best way to do it? Shall I connect all pot lights to the junction box controlled by the 3-way switch and completely cancel the other light switch/junction box in the room or split the pot lights in half, one half connected to one junction box and the other half to the other? Would that be weird or unprofessional to have to light up half of that room with one switch and the other half with another? Are pot lights supposed to light up all together in a given room or is it ok to split them between two switches. Moreover, if I did that then the dimmer switch can only control half of the lights and not all. Shall I install another dimmer switch for the other half of the pot lights and have each half function independently? I feel like it's gonna be unprofessional and maybe also annoying while trying to match the dim level on each switch. What do home renovators do in this case, do they cancel one light switch and it's junction box and just connect all pot lights to the existing 3-way switch and install the dimmer switch there? Thank you so much in advance.
@placidprosper6353
@placidprosper6353 8 месяцев назад
I hope u went with the first option, everything else after that is your brain trying to find away out of completely canceling one of the circuits, or if it’s hard to get to the line just put a cover plate matching the ceiling color, and terminate power there if it’s easy.
@luciddream2033
@luciddream2033 Год назад
And if there are ceiling joists, then you have holes to patch. Its best to actually go into the attic and find the joist so you can make everything is the same distance off the wall or use a stud finder.

@farcyde2948 Год назад
Can you elaborate cause I feel like he needed very special conditions for this technique to work for him. And I gotta install these cans next weekend
@luciddream2033
@luciddream2033 Год назад
@farcyde2948 well lets say you poke a hole at 3 feet off the wall and then go to the opposite side and poke a hole at 3 feet, but find out that there is a ceiling joist in your way. Now you must move that 4 inches off the ceiling joist. My point is that it's best to do a visual inspection for plumping pipes, duct work, and get a measurement of the ceiling joists so you can get them symmetrical.
@slicktmi
@slicktmi 8 месяцев назад
Or you can do the slim canless lights they fit right under the joist. Also it's not the attic that's the issue it's flat roof homes that don't have attics that are the issue
