Today I'm sharing with you my review of this budget micro four thirds Panasonic Lumix 20mm F1.7 lens, after more than 4 years of using it for both professional and personal work.

@@shanmukhsanjay1301 yes, as a used camera. There is not much demand for them so they are going cheap but they are great for talking head vlog. And just as capable for stills as say an E-M5ii

Your clip isn't like the others that often talk too much and show their samples less. And your samples are associated to what your are mentioning, that's great for the audience. I am an Olympus shooter and bought this lens as an alternative to the Olympus 17mm f 1.8. It is not quite as wide but it is about half the price. This is one of my favorite lenses and I especially like the way it does color. The relatively slow and noisy autofocus are not much of a problem for me.

One word for the lens -- Amazing! At the price point not many lenses out there regardless of the formats, IMHO, can touch this one. It becomes my walk around lens. Some people complain about its slowness in focusing. That doesn't bother me. And found that if no UV filters, it can focus pretty well with my e m1. On the paper it should be similar to my Olympus 25mm 1.8. But for whatever reason, this tiny 20mm gives photo a "pop" looking. Really love it.

the 14 mm has been the default mount on my M4/3 for decades and I'm getting all these recent recommendations. It makes me happy.

I have a split opinion about this lens. I like it very much because it is sharp, fast, small, lightweight and not very expensive. The only problem I have is that I can't trust the autofocus in combination with my Olympus cameras. They don't work very well together. I have the E-M10ii and the E-PL9. The autofocus is only in about 90% of cases as accurate as with my Olympus 25mm f1.8 and 17mm f1.8 lenses. So I often have to refocus. Besides the AF of the 20mm f1.7 is significantly slower.

I have the EPL-1 with the original software. Mk1 version of this lens auto focus works well with this body. EPL-1 does not play well with other Panny lenses that I have tried, specifically all my Panny Leica lenses 15mm f1.7, 12-60 2.8 to 4.0, or my 100-400mm f 4-6.3. So yes, there can be problems using Oly lenses on Panny and vice versa. My theory: older lens may work with older cameras with older software, but not always.

I love the rendering of my 20/1.7 Mk 1 and it’s beautifully made. It feels very dense and the focus ring is very smooth. It’s not sharp in the corners wide open, but who cares? It has the bokeh of a much pricier lens and a classic feel to the way it renders. Stopped down it’s very sharp across the frame.

Great review. Very thorough. I already have the PanaLeica 15mm, so probably won’t get this lens. However, I’d certainly look at this lens as an option if I were looking for a lens between 12 and 50mm. The PanaLeica 15mm is a bit pricey, and that 20 seems to be a really good wide lens at a reasonable price.

I bought the first version back in 2009. It was the first prime available for MFT. I have had it many years but I almost never use it. I find 20mm a frustrating focal length. I prefer to use the Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the Panasonic 25mm. The only use I have for it is when I need the smallest size possible. It is great for small gimbals or when using a smaller camera like the G100 when wanting to not draw attention to the camera. For those reasons I keep the lens despite not liking the focal length.

Just bought one used, and seems the auto focus is not especially quick or quiet. Wondering if just my copy or age of the lens is a factor ? Also, shooting on the G85 seems not a great option with 4K video based on numerous internet comments.

I have the lumix g7 with the kit lens. Im going to buy the 25mm f1.7 lens soon. Its a good prime lens. Good for bokeh, fashion portraits, video especially. As you rightly mentioned makes it 35mm equivalent, adding that film look.

@ , I shot a test video.It was good. I tried it in a tight spot in my kitchen, where I was using the handycam with a wide angle attachment. I have not watched the results yet.There was a focussing problem with Lumix G7.

@@ThatRuralQueer Get the Lumix if you want AF. The 7Artians was sharp, corners could be a little soft but overall the image quality is excellent and I've not noticed any CA issues. My biggest gripe is that it's a clickless aperture, apart from that it's a solid buy for the price.

I'm a gh5 owner and have the 25mm f1.7 your image is so sharp can you remember what fram rate and iso you shot it in .

I always try to use ISO as low as possible, between 100 and 500. For the frame rates I shot at 24 fps for real time and 30 and 60 fps for slow motion. But in the editing process I always interpret all the footage to 23.976 fps and I always edit in a 23.976 fps timeline. Thanks very much for watching!

I have bought this lens second hand , its pretty sharp and nice field of view, but i hate how noisy the focus is and how it takes forever to focus. I wonder if i got myself a faulty lens or if thats how they all are..

For sure it's very sharp and has a versatile field of view. As I mentioned in the video, it's not the quieter nor the fastest lens when it comes to focusing. But for the price, I think it's still a great deal! Thanks for watching!

The footage looks underexposed. It might be because of that brown filter that is over the footage. I would look on the raw footage. I mean without any filter on top to see how this lense performs. Could you please uploade one? Thanks in advance!

Hi Vitor, thanks for this video. You mention in the video that you have the new version (2?) of this lens. I had the old version 1 and was not so happy with it and eventually sold it (focusing was very slow, continuous focus almost impossible :) Although I was using it for still photography mainly and you are using it primarily for video it may be different. However, I have 2 questions if I may. 1) Is version 2 so much better than version 1? 2) I guess the GH5 has a good ibis. How essential do you think is to have a good in body image stabilization when shooting or recording with this lens? I have a GX8 which has ibid, but it is not the best, I have to say. Thanks in advance. Actually, one more question: I have the Olympus 17mm f1,8 now that has a faster focus and in my opinion sharper than the Lumix 20mm v1. Although, i am still having troubles shooting good videos with it. Is it the ibis that I am missing in the body?

Hey Barnabas! I never used the mark one version of this lens, so I can't compare the mark two to the mark one... I must say though that the continuous autofocus on your camera is automatically disabled when using this lens because this lens doesn't support continuous autofocus (I forgot to mention that in the video). If your camera has ibis, I don't think that you're going to have much trouble as long as you are steady when recording video. But if the camera doesn't have ibis I would say that investing on a gimbal will be a good investment for you to be able to use this lens to its maximum capabilities! Thanks for watching

The 20mm is a "standard lens" image circle diameter of the 4/2 sensor is 23.5mm If we delve into the exif it is revealed to be a Leica. Which explains why it is sharp. Leica have a history of reportage which requires lenses designed to be sharp with a deep FoF. Not all that long ago bokeh and other unfocused splotches were considered to be faults. Hyperfocal techniques, focus point in front of the subject,, with a nicely defocused but not splotchy background and can improve the look from this lens

How do you manual focus when you are shooting a youtube video of yourself? Are you able to reach the screen?

I place a lighting tripod where I will be recording and grab focus on the tripod. Then I position myself where the tripod is and put the tripod aside and start recording.

It's a great lens for sure! Totally recommend it. Beware that the continuous autofocus on your camera is desabeled when using this lens! (I forgot to mention that on the vídeo). Thanks for watching
