I believe he said "thomann and their mic stands sucks" I dont think he ment the company, only the mic stand. But I get why that would have pissed some people off
Ola, loving it!! can't wait for you to blend the 2 mics, M160 for the body of the sound and the SM58 for the cut, the M160 has the warmth the Sm58 the definition, use BOTH and rock!! Yes!! you did it before I finished typing this comment, you know it makes sense, rock on dude!!
Sounds awesome, love the tone of the low end and the mids man. Both of them sound really great, I think Beyer is a bit smoother all the way through.. both of them sound awesome together.
The M 160 is usually my first choice mic. Both Tony Visconti and Geoffrey Daking recommended it to me for a vocal mic, and it has never failed me on any source! I use it on my vocals (bass, contra bass, baritone), and on electric electric guitar, and on acoustic guitar as well. Awesome as drum overheads, and does a great on the Glyn Johns technique. Glyn Johns combined and M 160 with an SM57 on Eric Calptan's guitar amp on I Still Do. Andy johns used two M 160s (left and right) on John Bonham's drum kit. Tony Visconti used it on David Bowie's vocals (before the introduction of the Manley Gold). Eddie Kramer always put one on Jimi Hendrix's and Jimmy Pages amps. (And pretty much everybody else's.) The M 160 is a mic that everyone should have!
free and totally unbiased reviews are great until the company says to take down the video cause you bash ONE of the few shit products they sell (thomann is awesome 99%). It's not Ola's fault its just how the world works but yeah
fact is,this is probably a paid sponsorship so he must do and say what the company that paid you wants,it's normal thats how the world works,i dont blame him for that
Your ability to keep things secret and under wraps is baffling Ola! Solar guitars and let me see if I can quote this right, “ there will never be a Satan 50, so stop asking” lol
use both the Shure and the M160 at the same time. Point the M160 straight at the dust cap and the Shure at the edge of the dust cap. I record on to two tracks and blend later. Definitely improves BOTH mics.
Interesting never used the store brand stands. Many have complained about industry standard ON Stage stands but I never had issues, sure if you over tighten them you can strip it and then they won't stand normal, you have to use zip ties. Check them out if you haven't plus my favorite guitar cable of choice other than brand names is Pro Co cables they are not solderless if you have one unscrew the case cover you notice it's a soldered cable. Even after careful cleaning them, the rubber sleeve may crack-split 1o years plus. I've always done the four cable hook up for my pedalboard, found out about crack-split after I sold a bunch of my pedals because always heard real bad his, crackling pop thought issue was my pedals. After I sold my pedals & was during moving is when I noticed my cable failed. Don't me wrong Pro Co pedals & cables are good but they need to improve the durability of the rubber cable quality like crack-split resistance type.
* Has tons of gear. * Reviews and endorses gear *records and makes music *has own guitar line " Always wanted a mic.* *Never just went out and simply bought the thing.* yeah, ok.
I hope I'm not the one who got you worried Thomman might get angry, we love your straight talking, Ola ^^ And I hope Thomann steps up to the plate and prove they value aftersales service ^^ On a side note, my screename apparently inspired some gentleman who composed music, I hope he puts a link here so I (and you) can listen to it ;)
Modern ribbons shouldn't break with phantom power anymore since companies make provision for it. However, I would still suggest asking Beyer whether you can use it with a phantom powered desk/interface or not.
You are correct but I'm sure he doesn't want to be responsible for anyone ruining their mics so always better to be on the safe side. I know my Royer can take phantom power and it's passive.
Great video I'm probably going to pick one up soon. I'm curious how does the M160 with 57 compare to a 57 with 421? I have the latter. I just don't wanna go out and purchase this if it makes a similar sound than the other combo.
Its amazing how crap cheap mic stands are. Pretty much get any K&M stand and you'll never have a problem. I don't know how to many brands can screw it up so often
I think it's only in AX8 and Helix formats though. Could be wrong. I just downloaded to check it out and there was no......just plain IR response in a non AX8/Helix format. Please correct me if i'm wrong though :)
I kept watching "Ho, what the hell's that? what is that?" it made me laugh. I was setting up my Boss ES8 when it was new and stepped on a switch that made a 100w Marshall scream at me full volume, I was madly hitting switches trying to stop it.
You can actually use Phantom Power on the mic. It will be cancelled out due to balanced signal transmission just with any other dynamic microphone. Just a hint from the product manager :)
This is what I was going to say. On Beyerdynamic website it says phantom is okay unless your cables are broken or the mic is damaged then there might be more damage.
Thanks for the recommendation bro, but I don't have any interest in buying that amp anyway, I just tested it a few times here and there. I already have enough (non fizzy) amps hahaha.
m160 is all about smoothness. and also the sound being uncoloured... very difficult for some people to kinda realize why it's good. I actually have recorded the vocals on my most popular song poor receipts with the m160 over the tlm 103 and the ak47
Might be an obvious question, but Ola, when you’re recording by micing the cab, do you have noise gates in your chain to eliminate any amp hum? Or do you not worry about hum and just eliminate it in the DAW later?
700 bucks new? I would need to hear it on some more subtle sources, but if a sort of "even" close pickup on cabs is what it does, that's a lot to pay for a phallic looking ribbon mic.
@around 9 minutes in the video Ola says the M160 will be better for "if you just solo out". That is believable. But for most of what he played in this video the SM58 was WAY better! The SM58 chugged tightly along really well, articulating the low-end rhythm. The M160 was total flub! Even after Ola rolled the bass off at his amp and also after he backed the mike away, it was still inarticulate flub at the low end, yuck! Sounded though, like the M160 MIGHT be sweet playing "solo out" stuff higher on the neck...
I liked the sm58 better then the m160. At least from youtube's terrible quality, it seemed to me like the sm58 had better highs and punch thru, where as the m 160 like you said sounds really flat or even or w/e. They sounded great mixed together however.
@Ola Englund Ola! I have a Satan 120 but I'm not getting as good of a tone as you. I'm using a RD412 cab and an sm58 (Schector Hellraiser c-1 guitar) but it doesnt really sound as good.
When you record, do you get any bleen from your strings? I tried both - a condenser and a dynamic microphone but I still get a lot of bleed... even though my cab is miced up in about 2 meters away from me. Please help and Cheers from Winnipeg!
