Its hard to tell without high end headphones and allot of detail is lost in youtube's shit audio compression, but the biggest difference is the SM7b is a quite a bit above the rest. I'm moving from a SM27 to something with lower end condenser mics have allot of pinging highs... Im going to end up with a sm7b
Here is a good way to put this, if ur a baritone and u want to sound like a tenor buy the at2020, if ur a high tenor and want to sound like a baritone buy the nt1, if u want a balanced normal pick-up of your voice basically ur happy with your voice go the SHURE
The Shure SM7b has the same internal capsule as the $99 SM57 and the $120 SM58. They all use the Unidyne 3 mic capsule. There are other videos on RU-vid showing how it's only the mics build, internal mic cage and pop filter that make it sound a little different. Also the SM7B does not have the small internal transformer that is in the SM58 and SM57 that gives them a stronger signal boost but those transformers also add some noise. Compare those three microphone and decide whether it worth an extra $300.
Hi Edward, "WOW!!! Your Voice is Amazing!". It's my first time hearing you sing and I am so impressed, what a pleasure. I do like your Merchandise... but 1st of all... do you have anything published?, I'd really welcome a chance to purchase an album. My kind regards Edward. John Ingham. Manchester, England.
I am a singer and I want to upgrade my home vocal recording setup from usb condenser to XLR. I am confused with the following options: 1. AKG P120 2. AKG P220 3. Lewitt LCT240 Pro 4. SE Electronics X1a Suggest me which one to choose and why? Note : I have a non-treated room.
@@vinylmusic8442 Thank you. Also, I am looking for a decent budget friendly pair of headphone for my vocal recording, music production and mixing/mastering. I am confused with the following options: 1. AT M30x 2. AKG K52/K72/K92 Also, you may suggest the ones you believe will be better for me. Thanks!!
@@vtenremix5250 SM7B is the most versatile microphone in the world. If you can't afford it go for the AKG D5. You can get a AKG D5 for $80 and it's amazing. Beatbox sponsored and singing sponsored too.
I mean you should really only be using the Shure SM7b if you need a dynamic because you don't have sound treatment, or maybe if it goes with your voice particularly well. It has really nice low end but pretty much no high end clarity.
Very nice I ned a mic for flute , hamonica and singing. NOTHING fancy . I'm in between Shure beta a 58 and Sennheiser e945. Had a Shure sm 58 before ( got stolen) , it worked fine but would like to try something a little better .Thanks in advance for any answer.
The NT-1 is better for vocals than the NT-1A which is better for instruments and the EV RE20 is better than the SM7B...AT2020 sounded good but I probably wouldn't use it
@@crakkajac7856 You don't say? The sm7b only sounds fuller (kinda muffled) when they don't put a giant ass low pass filter on it. His voice is also placed too high to really show the differences.
Not my style. Too squeaky. Not sure why a microphone wouldn’t last 5 years though. I have mics that have lasted for 30 years without any noticeable reduction in performance.
Great tutorial. Sounded like the AT2020 had the most clarity. The Shure SM7B seemed a little muddy to me even though it was the most expensive. An eq could probably fix it but it def had the nicest low end.
If anything, this video did more for audio technica on terms of quality. It shows how well it does up against the pricier tools. You were spot on with the results. It became a tad bit rough on high pitched words, but barely noticeable. Nothing that a little EQ couldn't smooth out. I've used it for many years. It doesn't take a lot of work on a mix. The Rode and Shure definitely has a slight edge, but I somewhat expected that. The pricing seems to be very different, but the quality is very similar. They really hit the airwaves about even to my ears. Great way to compare and great singing voice by the way 👍🏾
There's a lot of noise in your recordings. I don't think it's a microphone issue(since it's across all the mics in this test), there's something in your equipment giving off lots of very unpleasant noise.
The AT2050 is so divisive! It's a workhorse but it really depends on its use. I find it great for capturing a rooms ambience when recording. But then others hate it's frequency response...I just don't know...I JUST DON'T KNOW.
For $99 that's all my teen needs for her Vocal classes. Once she gets a summer job she can get herself something more expensive if she wants lol. Her classes and summer camps already suck up all my 💰 🤑 💸
1) AT 2020 generates brighter vocal with little noise 2) Rode was in the middle, Bright but the noise was less 3) Shure sounds a little damp or I can say it is less on the higher side of the vocals but focuses more on lows That's how I perceived
Edward: "gonna last you 5 years at least..." -PAUSE- Me: *glances at Shure SM7 that's been in the family since circa 1985... then the 7b I bought at 17 in 2007* paused Edward: "...." Me: "I mean... he's not wrong."
Thank you for making this video! I definitely listened to the singing portion multiple times more because you have an excellent voice, even though I was trying to hear the differences! :). I keep leaning towards the Rode NT1-A while doing my research. Would you say this mic is great for female vocals? Any other mic you suggest specifically for female vocals and acoustic guitar? Thank you so much, Edward!
at2020 = a little thin on the low mids, highs are great nt1 - low and high mid centric. great for vocals sm7b - recessed on the high mids, boosted on the lowend. imo, great for podcasts and can accentuate vocals that lack low end dynamics
The SM7B definitely sounds the best but I git the at2020 like 2 days ago and i absolutely love it. Really great vid and you have a really good voice btw
I am mostly into heavier music, but I do have a wide range of taste when it comes to music. I just wanted to say you have a great voice. I subbed to your channel. Cheers!
im going with the at2020 every time simply bc if you know how to mix pretty good you can easily make a 99$ mic sound better than a 300$.one that probably beats all mics tho is the tlm 103 it may be 1,000$ but it is worth it .
0:37 Audio Technica AT2020 0:41 RODE NT1A 0:45 SHURE SM7B I notice the shure SM7B has a heck more white noise than the NT1A. The NT1A does sound more on the low end but then again, you don't want a mic with more of a high frequency.
Mics are only one part of the process. And most mid to higher level mics will give you more than you need. I have been using a MXL BCD1 and frankly the end output can't be distinguished from even the SM7B. I have a deeper voice anyways, so it tends to work well with many mics. I think a lot of people get too worked up over cost and what "everyone else is using". We see the same with photography... if you look at the end results of a shot taken with a Cannon vs Nikon (for example), you can NOT tell which took the picture. How it was processed has FAR more to do with end result than what camera took the picture. The same is true with mics... as long as you have reasonable quality to begin with you will be more than happy with the end results given all other aspects of your production. But don't think I am saying "don't get expensive mics".... I am not. I am saying that if you WANT them, and can afford them, get them; and be happy. But know that the end user will never know, or care, what mic you used... they only care about what they hear. Cheers!
The higher you go up in the quality of microphones, the higher you need to go up in audio gear to be able to tell the difference. Always thought this sort of people misled people... Great video!
Thank you!! They are both really good, but for gaming the AT2020 is perfect... maybe have a look at the AT2020 USB so that you don't need an audio interface.
@@EdwardSmithMusic ty for replying! im really noob in the audio recording stuff i was going to buy u-phoria umc22 + xlr cable didn't know there is a 2020 USB version, do you think it has the same quality? Im recording my videos with kim khromu usb 40$ and sounds pretty meh 😅
if you need pop filter and shock mount of normal quality not china trash) then nt1-a almost same price that at2020+ shock +pop but is true condenser more loud, and real sound not tiny one thanks!
edward i know the Rode need Phantom powerr so how do i get that or use it. Do i just plug it in to the Focusrite and into my laptop and i am done or what else is needed here
Damn.. nice voice... but next time please solo the vocals for mic comparison. The only one I can tell is the SM7B and that's just cuz it has that dark smoothness to it no matter what recording.... just so silky on the mids and lows.
Thank you for the awesome videos, but I have a question here if I am buying one, which one would be more suitable for a classical singer? As a lyrical soprano or mezzo-soprano, I am about to buy a couple of microphones as gifts for my wife. She will use them for live performances of her students "she's an opera vocal instructor and choirmaster." any recommendations for the 100-300USD range for female opera singer live performances?
Within the first minute I noticed that when you said Shure, the Shhhh sound seemed, um, prominent. The SM7B, like an SM58 I've had for years, seems to need great mic preamps. With the new Onyx preamps in Mackie mixers, the SM58 does better. Only thing, the SM7B looks like something you'd find in a World War 2 surplus store! 😄
Yea problem with RU-vid is that uploading a video compresses all of the audio to the same bitrate and that makes basically every audio track sound the same. Really need to do these audio tests on something like Vimeo that has a higher dynamic range. It's great for 1080p but for audio, not so much.
