Hi Alex. It is August 2024 and as a counterpoint to my beloved...Nikon D700 (who my other beloved isn't jealous of in the slightest, ha,ha,ha), I recently got the GX85 (an import from the states that makes it sound fancy like imported vinyl). Two different systems, but each are wonderful for their own reasons. I had read about it previously on the channel of the late, David Thorpe. My expectations, that were already high, were easily exceeded. I am happy to be shooting with it. Enjoy the rest of your week.
Thank you for stopping by and checking out the video! Thanks for the comment - really appreciate it. Enjoy your new camera and happy shooting! I hope it provides you with a lot of new inspiration ;) have an amazing day too :)
Hi ! love your way of thinking, i've got gx80 for 2 years and i always want more modern and expensive gear. Thanks to You i Will learn to use my gx80 better before buying something else i don't really need.. 🙃
I am a fellow RU-vidr and a G9 and GX800 owner. I am watching videos about this camera because I could buy one. Your videos was really useful. Thank you! I subscribed to your channel 🙏🙏
I went for the Gx9, solely for stills, but it's really getting me into taking video as well, because even with next to no knowledge about videography and colour grading, I can get very decent looking footage out of it. I love it, especially because of its versatility. With the 12-32 it easily fits into my bag or jacket pocket and with the extra grip and the 100-300 it's great for wildlife.
you and matthew have the same idea in terms of vlogging when you focus from your knee to ankle. Another great video, even though I don't have the camera.
Cool review with some good vlogging tips. I’ve had this camera ever since it came out in 2016. I have other cameras but I just can’t seem to sell this one, as it is great on so many levels. Because it is so small, I’ve taken it along on situations where I wasn’t hired as a photographer or videographer and I have been able to provide some memorable images and footage for myself, family, and friends.
I loved this video on GX80 a lot. I am planning to buy this camera and I have seen lots of videos. And also, this video gave me lots of hack, that helps me to bypass the shortcomings of the camera. Thanks a lot.
Hey, thank you very much! I am happy to hear you found this useful! If you have a little extra budget - the Panasonic G80 is also very good. It's got a mic input and a flip screen and with the type of quality content that you produce, you will need these! :)
You mentioned the 4K panning feature for products but it would be nice for you to have included a screenshot of the menu settings so we will know how to set it access it.
Subscriber #616 here and excited to support you! I'm in the market for a camera and wanted to avoid defaulting to the most widely purchased most expensive models. This video is very helpful and I look forward to buying this. Thank you for this much needed review.
Great video. I'm shooting all my videos with a bmpcc4k, but I am thinking about a smaller camera for on the go. This camera is very interesting. And your tip with the uv filter is incredible. Thanks
Honestly, the best review i’ve seen (and believe me, i’ve seen quite a lot😂) about gx80. I’ve enjoyed it so much that i’ve definitely decided to order one after watching that. But suddenly i’ve found a gx9+14/140 used (2 years) at the same price of a new gx80+14/140. And now i’m stucked. Any advice? Again, really nice video, thank you a lot!
just bought the gx80.. waiting to arrive this week.. previous camera was a canon t2i so you can imagine how excited I am hahah great channel.. keep it up!
Totally agree mate. I've used micro four thirds for 5 years but recently jumped to Fujifilm. I definitely prefer Fuji but I will never get rid of my GX80 for the points you make. I personally bought it as I knew it was a perfect minimalist camera at first sight. Good combo with 14mm +25mm 1.7. Great family camera
Interesting- I had a GX80 for a while but couldn't adapt to the menu system as an long-time Olympus user - ended up selling it and getting the Olympus PEN E-PL9 which has pretty much the same size and capabilities and controls I understand. Looking forward to this as my main walk-about camera and planning to get a compact wide prime to make the combo jacket-pocketable.
Your videos with GX80 looks amazing, exactly what I would like to achieve with it. You have a new subscriber here:-) I got my GX85 with 12-32mm and 45-150mm kit lenses. I am thinking of buying additional lens for better depth of field and low light capacity. What would you recommend to me?
Thanks for the sub! :) have a look at some of my other videos on the channel, I do talk about cinematic lenses. I'd recommend the Olympus 45mm f1.8, but you need to get used to the field of view. Have a look at my 'Norway' videos. Both were shot with those.
Thank you for the review and good advice! Just wondering if I should go for GX80 to record my stealth car camping. Shame it doesn't have a flip monitor or mic input, however it does have good quality sensor and is able to capture things very nicely like you did! Your explanation and actual results are quite compelling evidence! (...and just subscribed!)
Hi Alex! I came across your video and it was very helpful! I am looking into buying a new camera system for hiking and trekking videos. I have a Nikon D3100 and its so heavy with the lenses that I never bring it and just film hikes on my Galaxy s10. I am looking for something like the GX85/GX80 and I think this is a good fit for me! I don't really vlog, I would much rather get amazing footage of the views and get some footage of me hiking on the trail. Is the autofocus only really an issue when someone is vlogging? I want to take amazing footage of my Tour du Mont Blanc trek but without breaking the bank or worrying about a 10 day trek with expensive and heavy camera equipment! I also LOVE the fact the camera can be charged on the go with a powerbank. Could you recommend to me if this is the right camera for my needs? Also if you could let me know which filters to get for it? my hiking footage usually looks too sunny in my videos and I would like to make it more cinematic if possible. Thanks!
Oh also! could you recommend to me 1 or 2 lenses for hiking purposes? for nice landscape shots and maybe closer details (flowers, etc). I wonder if the kit lens 12-32mm is nice? You also mention the audio is pretty bad, could you tell me what external mic you use? Sorry for all the questions xD your video was the most helpful I have seen and the stabilization on this camera with 4k video really caught my eye because I could hold this camera while hiking and not have extra stabilization :)
I’ve subscribed after watching your videos, obviously :) May I ask you one little thing? What’s the software do you use to edit your videos and the external microphone you prefer with your GX85? I have a GX9 and love it and I’d like to start making videos of my travels. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I am impressed how you work around the deficiencies of the camera - the reflection trick honestly does not work for me (just stared into my Oly 45mm with Hoya HMC filter and could not see anything from any angle :) ). The focusing from the knee is also a clever workaround. Audio recording is not relevant if you can get a used Zoom recorder and sync really good audio afterwards. Still the prices for this camera are really low (around 400Euro), so it is worth the money even if Panasonic should finally eliminate their stupid auto-focus hunting in MFT cameras.
Haha you're very welcome. Happy you found some of my tips useful. Honestly - every camera has limitations, but with how in-expensive this camera is the limitations are very worth it. PS, you won't be able to vlog with that 45mm lens anyway, you need something much winder like a 12mm or a 14mm
@@justalexhimself Check that lady and you will transform your camera to america version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f-Kzw4CoR98.html
I tried going for mft couple of times, but in the end was never satisfied with imaga quality. you can get better results with apsc like sony or ricoh gr.
I am thinking of getting this camera for a self-bought birthday present - even more so after your helpful vid, thanks! Love your case too - where did you get it from?
Thanks for this video. I'm looking to add this camera as a second camera to my bmpcc4k. I'm thinking to use this as a Webcam with my Atem mini as well. Can you tell me if this camera has a clean hdmi out?
hey you're very welcome - it's got an HDMI mini output (I think its a mini) and I am not sure if you can use it as a webcam ( never tried) so I can't really comment with certainty...
I have the Gx80 but unfortunately the 1080P output of this camera is very bad, did you shoot in 4K and downscale it to 1080p or all of your videos are in 1080p?
all my videos are in 1080p... I actually have a different video on my channel about my settings that I use to get the best video quality out of this camera - have a look!
JustAlex Himself I tested the video in 1080P with your settings but I can’t see any difference, do you add sharpness in post? What is your render settings? I really like to know that, thanks, your videos are amazing
@@MorYohai No worries at all: i rarely add sharpness in post.. I think the videos are sharp enough... Regarding export settings: H264, I always tick 'export using highest render quality' so my bit rate always goes to 'custom' by default in Premier Pro. A part from that, that's pretty much it.. Its strange that you're saying that your footage looks soft. I'm trying to think of other reasons why but nothing is coming to mind at the moment....
JustAlex Himself thanks for replying, it’s not just me, look in this topic, and also in DPReview, a lot of this camera owners complain about the 1080p output of the GX80 www.mu-43.com/threads/gx85-mushy-1080-video-fix.101336/
this camera with an extra lense is currently on sale for $499. I am thinking about purchasing. it seems to be a decent price for what you get and buying just the camera and a kit lense it actually more ironically. what say you?
Thank you! ooo I am going to make a video on this soon. I am very split between the 20mm f1.7 and the Olympus 45mm f1.8. Depends what kind of look you prefer. If you like "wider" shots go for the Panasonic. If you like a more "tele-photo" look, go for the Oly ;)
@@justalexhimself i know i am in the minority but i just didn't love the 20mm/f1.7 the way many folks seem to. i do like the P25/1.8 as a FOV. and it doesn't sound like much 25mm vs 20mm but the 25mm offers up something ...special and, for me, the 20mm doesn't. now the 45mm really is a very different FOV. thumbs up.
Hi Alex, nice video. I am looking to for my first mirror less camera. i'm torn between GX85 with 12-32&45-150 Kit(600$) and XT20 with XC15-45(400$). I intended it for family and travel photography. which one is better investment?
@@rajashekharreddys9416 No problem man. I think for video image stabilisation is very important. When you start shooting hand-held and you have shaky footage you will feel like your videos suck and it will get you demoralised to create more videos... If you just want to shoot photos - go for the bigger sensor. Full Frame cameras will for sure have better photos.
Hi, so I really want to upgrade from my Canon 7D to this camera. Do you think it will be worth it? I want to use it mostly for street photography, and doing small video projects such as making a short movie for small festivals, after movies, or ads for small online shops
It's hard to say for me - I've never used the Canon 7D so it's difficult for me to compare the two in my head... For photography though, I think a bigger sensor is preferable... I don't know. Anyone else reading this thread - feel free to contribute!
I would recommend trying the unusual viewfinder first if possible. For some it’s hard to get used to. Otherwise with my G9, EM5 Mark iii it gets regular use in rotation.
Actually I don't see any price down in M4/3. Everybody, everyday, here on RU-vid is posting million of videos that the format is dead but prices are even increasing unfortunately.
Its called the "Sokani" I think.. something like that. I don't recommend it. Battery dies after like 10 mins. Buy the Apature M9 instead (the smallest one they have) It might seem expensive but batter lasts for ages
Hey Alex I’m not sure if you or anyone else will see this but I wanted to get this camera for Instagram selfies and out of the day photos because my iPhone just doesn’t give me the sharp detail I want are photos sharp on this camera ? Do they capture every detail ? I recently bought a cannon power shot 730x but the photos didn’t look sharp at all
Hey Joy, thanks for your comment. In short: yes you can get some awesome portrait shots on this camera, have a look at this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UjSEb2CLCBQ.html But these are not "selfies". Because for selfies you need a wide angle lens with a lack of a flip screen it might be tough to frame yourself. You'd be better off asking someone else to take a photo of you. Also, the kit lens is OK, but you will get even better results if you adopt other lenses / vintage lenses.
LUMIX GX85 Mirrorless 4K Photo Digital Camera Body Two Lens Bundle with 12-32mm and 45-150mm Lenses or Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Vlogging Camera Kit with EF-M 15-45mm lens. Which one should I buy for 500?
@@justalexhimself yes of course ;) Weight 344g vs 426 g Color Depth 24.1vs 22.9 Dynamic Range 13.1 vs 12.6 Low Light ISO 1347 vs 662 Sensor Pixel Area 15.28µm2 vs 14.21µm2 AE Bracketing Range ±5 EV vs ±3 EV Not to mention the super fast auto focusing I like its logo by the way)
@@sovu9399 yeah but for film-making: Manual Focus will still trump auto-focus any time. High ISO is useless because image is still noisy and weight is just a silly argument because APSC lenses are bigger and weigh more. So overall you're still screwed. PLUS NO IBIS so footage is useless and unwatchable. Panasonic GX80 on the other hand: super practical tool which will work wonders in the right hands ;) Sony fan boys just can't stomach it :))
@@justalexhimself High ISO is useless on your gx80 that is a fact. ''No IBIS, ''unwatchable'' muhahaha, The sony lenses have IBIS. I am not Sony's fan boy for that matter, I have Lumix fz300, which i love even more than my a6000 that i sold.
