If you are moose hunting in Alaska or Northland Canada you had better be prepared to protect yourself from a charging Grizzly. Too much gun is not possible, too little gun will get you killed !

So disappointed in you mentioning the 6.5CM. Moose? Really? Lol

Yep. I don't think these two have spent much time hunting moose. I'd have to see video proof of them actually hunting moose to believe it given most of what I heard in this video.

@@lynnjr457respectfully I don’t think either of you have spent much time hunting moose. They have large vitals that aren’t well protected, and you have ample opportunity for a follow up shot. If you aren’t considering defending yourself from grizzlies or a charging moose, 6.5 is going to serve you better than 45-70. Unless you want to upload your own moose hunt 🙂

@@johnkaraphillis754 The old Swedes and Norwegians have been harvesting moose with the 6.5 swedish Mauser for over a hundred years . Shot placement is key !

30-30 winchester,, its all you need,, hunt close, place your shot,,the hunting world would be a better place if all that was used is open sight 30-30s,, this stupid 1000 yard plus sniping game that is used on game animals is slob hunting at its finest,,

You lost me with .308 "Performance wise kinda indistinguishable from the 30-06". Really? The only way you get close to this being true (close, but no cigar) is by comparing factory .308 and 30-06 in the 150gr and 165gr range. You certainly are not comparing 180gr and above which are the more likely bullet weights for Moose hunting. And you aren't taking handloading into account which is where you really see the 30-06 leave the .308 WAY behind. Not unlike factory 10mm ammo which was neutered when the .40 S&W came out, modern factory 30-06 is quite neutered which is the only reason why .308 is even close.

No 35 Whelen?? I can’t think of a better moose cartridge. More range than lever action chamberings but not the recoil of big magnums

35 Remington, 308 , 30 06, 270, 45-70, 303 , .. Lots of Northern Maine, and Labrador Moose have filled freezers for many a family, and they hunter didn't need an expensive Belted Magnum. But to be fair A old Ford Bronco at 15 mph did just as good. And so did the Railroad my Grandfather worked for especially around the rut.

Since moose are generally hunted at fairly close range, any of the cartridges mentioned would work just fine. Shot placement is the most important skill for any hunter. A lot of Canadian hunters kill caribou and moose with a 22 hornet of all things. They just make sure to take their time, get in close and get a head shot. I've always wanted to go moose and elk hunting, but my financial and health problems will probably never allow that dream to come true, especially at my age. But if I ever did get the chance and was allowed to pick the rifle and cartridge, I would have to go with a CZ550 in 375 H&H mag . With a 270 gr SP ,the drop and drift are almost identical to a 180 gr 30-06 with a Lot more energy. If someone paid for the trip and all I had to bring was the rifle, I'd feel perfectly confident with dad's old 7×57 Mauser with the Leopold 4× scout scope and a box of 140 gr Core Loked ammo. A nice, tight shot just right behind the shoulder and I'd be munching on moose steaks. 😉

Two .45-70s - a Marlin 1895CB with 26"bbl, 10 round tube & Henry Single Shot with 20"bbl. Handloads make a huge difference, ballistic chart taped to the stock to be sure.

Single shot in bear country?
@lynnjr457
@lynnjr457 4 месяца назад
@@Paul15. For the first 100+ years of our country's history people explored more bear country than any modern hunter will even read about and they did it with single shot muzzle loaders. There were significantly more bears around at that time too. If you know what you are doing, trust your skills, and are sure footed, a single shot is all you need.

340 Weatherby or 338. Have the foot pounds and distance. With Nosler Partitions they will open fast and exit. No better combo. You can carry them all day. Up close I'm a charge you don't want a 30 or 6.5.. Elmer Keith was right.

Odd that there's no mention of the PRC cartridges, most noticeably the 7mm and .300 cartridges, which would and should be in play.

I now live in the adirondacks of NY and I talk about this quite often. Think about what was used before these newer (1906) rounds were available.. game hasn't grown body armor over time , no need for a sore shoulder or a scope eye to hunt a moose.

I've been elk hunting with my 338 Win Mag for many years. I've taken many elk with it. I load for the area I hunt which is mostly aspen forest. The valley I hunt has a max distance of about two hundred yards. I started loading a 250 grn Speer Grand Slam at 2500 fps. rather than the 225 grn. First elk I took with that load was at 95 yards walking down hill on the trail in the middle of the valley. I had a window of about 15 yards for a shot. When he got there I let a round fly hitting him above the ight shoulder and it lodged in his left side of the hide. First time ever I knocked an elk off his feet. It him like a giant hammer. He slid downhill until his antlers caught on a small aspen. So, a couple years went by and I finally drew my moose permit in Colorado; it took several years and points. I scouted all summer and decided on hunting in the Colorado State Forest. That's where the moose were released back in 1975. They have flourished and are now all over the state. Anyway, I called in a bull on the third day of the hunt after spending the first two in camp by myself because of an early snow blizzard; it was nasty. Called him to about 25 years. When he cleared the small pine tree he stepped into a dry creek with his left shoulder quartering toward me. I held on the shoulder and dropped him right there with a single shot through the shoulder and the heart. He was pretty big by Colorado standards, 42 1/2 inches; probably eight hundred lbs. It took me three days to get him back to camp using my horses. The thrill of my hunting career was calling in that moose, even more so than the actual taking him with one shot. I practiced all summer with a moose call I bought from an Alaskan guide. The 338 will do it all. I wouldn't be afraid to go after a grizz with that gun. I have a 6.5 CM. I haven't hunted with it but I will hunt antelope with it and maybe deer someday.
