@aquapros what is the tree in back of your tank called and will a planted tank similar to yours benefit my cory cats.and my tiger barbs right now i have a sand substrate for them
I don’t even own fish or a tank, but here I am... 12am... finding this in my recommendeds... avoiding sleep... Glad your shrimp acclimated properly though!
But do you research first, learn about the Nitrogen/ Ammonia cycle, biofilters and avoiding chlorinated and flourinated water when cleaning your filters/sponges
That sucks. My dad always had a tank and then I got my own 10 gallon for my room with his and my mom's approval. I now as an adult with my own kids have 6 freshwater planted tanks with community fish and red cherry shrimp as well as pink and brown ramshorns snails running today, a walstad jar, a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon, a crayfish tank, and 4 cats. We love animals over here. My youngest who just turned 8 on the 22nd just started her own 5 gallon. She has guppies, killi fish, pink ramshorns snails, and red cherry shrimp as well as plants and Manzanita wood. She has this idea of using her marimo balls on the tips of the tree branches to makes it more life like.
The SAE are great for algae and as long as you've got fish in which don't eat the shrimp then the Amano shrimp are a great solution too. Florida flag fish are a great one for algae too but they can be nippy little buggers so they're no good with small fish and shrimps. Groovy.
My SAE grew big and started eating my shrimp and chomped on some of my neons, even a headlight tetra was bitten pretty bad and didn't make it. I pulled him out, he's working on a turtle tank now, turtle loves chasing him but the SAE is quick and hides in the rock hides and structures. I just added 5 more Amanos and thinking about grabbing some cherry shrimp to add some color.
Have Amanos in a planted 40 g breeder tank. Just added 3 Rainbow Gobys to help the shrimp with algae control. The Goby's primary source of food is the bio film on everything, including algae. Amazing non stop workers. Great vid!
Very cool! I like that you drip acclimated but you can hit those amanos upside the head with a brick and not kill them, super hardy and tough shrimp! And they get big too! Amazing tank✌️
Fun fact: The type of diadromous (part freshwater, part marine) life cycle that amano shrimp and some other freshwater shrimp (e.g. Macrobrachium spp.) have is called "Amphidromy" which specifically describes the need for the larval form to develop at first in saltwater then move to freshwater to complete its life cycle.
Randomly went to a pet store, ended up coming home with a beta. now i have a 55 gallon empty tank. now am crash course learning. very entertaining and informative!
Great information! We have a small tank with Black Beard Algae, 9 Amano shrimps, 2 Siamese Algae Eaters and a few other fish. By far, yours has been the best video I’ve found on dealing with algae! Subbed!
My guess, as to why there is more algae at the right side of your tank is because the Siamese Eaters and the shrimp might not like the current that is being expelled by your Aquaclear top filter. Maybe if you move the filter to a different area , like where the slightly browning grass at the bottom is, in the open area, then the fish and shrimp will move to the other area, by the tree, to eat the algae. This might be why your grass(as I call it) in the open area is turning a bit brown, because there isn’t enough water circulation there ? Also, where there is more water circulation, there is more oxygen, and plants need/love oxygen, not only light. Also, just like garden plants, some plants like partial shade, like Hostas, not light all day or they die. In fact, most Hostas thrive on shade and humidity, like in the rainforest. You might do better by putting some floating plants on the top to shade it a little. I would research that grass on the bottom, it might not be the fertilizer that you’re using, it might be too much sunlight. I just thought I’d help, it’s worth a try.
Tadpoles still the one for me. I learned that on my local aquatic plant farm. They are costless and by the time they turn frogs sell them or breed so that they could produce another spawn.
I have a 210gal planted tank that I messed around with for two years trying to get the hair algae out of the tank but pulling it didn't work, turning off the lights failed, herbicides only worked for a couple of weeks before the algae returned. Last month I went to the local fish store and bought what they had labeled flying foxes but which appear to be siamese algae eaters. I placed six in the tank and within two weeks you couldn't find a trace of hair algae. I even had a couple of fine leaved artificial plants at the back of the tank that were overgrown and you could see the fish swimming in and out of the leaves picking out bits of algae. My water returns at the surface had hair algae growing on them at the surface and you could see the algae eaters swimming up and tugging the hair algae off the return tubes until they had gotten it all. I'm beginning to think three or four would have been enough to clean the tank but who cares as long as they keep it from coming back. In the meantime they seem to eat flake food and my homemade fish food that contains spinach in the mix along with going over live plant leaves in the tank.
I have four Amano. Two male two female. They are amazing. I could watch them for hours. My females are fearless. They steal food from my golden barbs. They have a liking for nettles and flake food. They surprisingly do not enjoy shrimp pellets.
Amano shrimp goes huge. With 50 shrimp and the tank size.... im not sure if that ok. You should get RCS or something colorful instead since they don't grow like Amano Shrimp.
What sort of plant is that on the bottom? I'm about to start a new aquarium with live plants and that's the exact look I'm going for, been doing tons of research but I can't quite decide what to plant. Something that will cover the entire bottom. I have a water garden outside, unfortunately in the Midwest your outside time is severely limited lol. Covid has me working from home so I need something to not go insane, an aquarium full of plants is just what the Dr ordered!
This is stunning.. im new to the hobby but cant wait until i am able to properly be able to handle things like this.. stunning. what type of tree is that?
me with cherry shrimp: Why dose he have so much algae while I have NONE! him: idk Me: give me all your algae for free please I beg you Me again: Please please please please 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 i neeed algae please! :(
I have been battling hair algae for about 3 months now. Just got some fancy guppies and a few American Flag fish(or Florida Flag fish) and wow they are mowing right through it. Just fyi if you want some new fish and maybe need some to help with hair algae.
That's a sweet tank! I just added amanos to my glowlight tetra tank. They're like Homer Simpson at an all you can eat buffet, but with way more arms. I'm sad to hear they won't breed though. I thought that was ghost shrimp. Oh well, at least they live for a couple years if they're healthy, unlike the ghost shrimp.
I have 4 Amano shrimp that I've had for almost 3 years now. They are incredibly hardy and great at cleaning algae. In my experience they are tougher than Ghost Shrimp!
This is the first time that I have ever watched any of your videos. I am very interested in having a shrimp tank. I very much enjoy your video and look forward to seeing more. Thank you for the heads up on Flip Aquatics. They have great prices and I have never seen so many different shrimp. Do you have a good place to get plants for the tank? Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you
I used to buy a dozen ghost shrimp a week to feed my freshwater mora eel. They used to breed for me a lot. I’d always find itty bitty new shrimp in the tank.
Hey Aquapros, what are those plants in that aquarium,i'm inspired slightly to do something like that with my ember tetras and where'd you get that wood from?
Put some features in that tank. That’s basically a featureless desert. Notice how the tetras hug the bottom and don’t school? They are stressed and your fish may get “empty tank syndrome” unless you add more features.
I have a local store that sells glass shrimp, i think they're cousins of these amano, because they have the black dots going down the shell. I was able to breed them by removing the egg bearers and putting them in a 10gal, I didn't have a huge success rate, but i would say 50%+ survived of about 50 hatchlings. I was able to do this with 3 different shrimp from 2 different generations, just gotta make sure the second tank is overgrown with algae and small things for the tiny shrimp. everything was fine untill my brother brought me a small school of giant danios Dx
I have a stupid question, how do you clean a soil tank when the fish waste accumulated at the bottom? I've never used soil before, will the plant actually acts as filter that break down the waste so that we don't need to clean the soiled bottom?
Ad problem with black beard algea siamese algea eaters cleared it up brilliantly. Notice in some fish shops they were identified as algae eater but wernt. Foud the alea eaters at another shop but were identified as another cant remember there names . Think there were 3 types very similar but had to go on net to identifie the difference
Hi Bro! Just a quick question on planting carpets using poting soil as dirt. Keeping literate on first level from below, then using poting soil, then fine or powder of poting soil. I am going to use additives stage wise and liquid fertilizers and nutrients with pressureised CO2. Please advice and comments are appreciated. Rgds.
Create a random rock formation shelters of crisscrossing rocks arranged in a self-stabilzing way so as to create as many surface area exposed to free flowing water and sunlight so as to promote a constant regrowing supply of algae food for the algae eaters which they will add to the algae they are eating off from the glass of the aquariium and plants and other objects that offers a surface for algae to grow.
Not sure if they release the eggs. I've watched my amanos fan the hatching srimplets off their abdomen in fresh water but they were all devoured quickly by my cardinals haha. Your Tank is looking awesome!
I built a SpongeBob aquarium on my channel recently and I had some green algae at first on the grass but I found that plecos sorted it out (and also putting the light on a timer).
Aimee M i had one as a kid, it was sold as one of the smaller varieties, but as it grew it spend a few years living longer than the aquarium was high and over half the length. I hope he didn’t suffer too much from it. back then I had no idea and just thought as him as my awesome aquarium monster
I tried Nerite snails and then Otocinclus and it wasn't even close. In 3 days the 3 Otto's had a algae covered tank spotless. the nerites had been in there a week already (3 again) and barely made a dent. Snails are slow just like the stereotype lol
My nerite polished rocks shiny bright, but plants are full of hair algae that I can't get rid of, and the tank is not big enough to put fishes in it... 😕
I hope to some of his shrimp one day. Been wanting to for a while! By the way when can you do a video on all your tanks? We've seen Joeys, Aquarium Co-Ops, LR Bretz, when can we see all yours? I'd love too!
Great follow up! I'm currently working down some (staghorn i think? ) in my 38 gallon. I'm low tech but just started light exce dosingl to get the val used to it. Trying not to nuke anything lol.
How many should I have in a heavily planted 10 gallon? I have 2 apple snails in it right now, but I was wondering how many amano shrimp i should order.
My boyfriend has finally opened up to me having a second pet and told me he’d buy me a 36 gal bow front tank. 1) what filter do you recommend ? I want neon tetras - Gourami - and wither Ottos or Corys. 2) do those shrimp climb out ? The tank comes with a lid - but they can get out through pump area ? 3) what are those plants at the bottom of your tank ?? 4) cool tree decoration.
I'd suggest goto a facebook page. I'm in a freshwater aquarium page. Look for the ones with the most people in there. Quicker responses compared to asking a RU-vid question
I dunno about that. I heard that Amano himself kept them in the hundreds in his tanks. From what I understand, they leave a very small ecological footprint compared to fish, so you can definitely have many.
@@QualeQualeson I mean, there is definitely no problem to keeping a ton of them. It's just that I don't think you actually need that many to keep a tank such as this clean. They are voracious algae eaters and I'd argue that half that number should be enough
I think its mainly because your plants are growing quite well. Anyway, I'm intrigued that your livestock can be shipped without any air pocket in the bag or anything for them to cling onto during the transport
