@@rsotuyo15 It illustrates how vain and superficial the characters in this world are. Bateman just committed murder, but freaks out because the apartment of his victim (Paul Allen) is more expensive and is in a better area.
Pure symbolism. They all belong to the same wealthy, yuppie scum stereotypes who made themselves into virtual cartoons. Every good dark comedy uses the best in symbolism in a not so subtle way to satirize its despicable characters.
@@ecstacy2921 Now that I really stopped and looked, you're right. Paul Allen's had the better font as well as bolding of the letters. The text was also positioned closer to the corners of the card which provided a good contrast.
I don't why everyone isn't talking about the fact that this guy goes from typical wall street serial killer to New York's greatest hero in only 5 years. Truly an inspiring story of turning your luck around and growing as a human.
I'm curious, how did he get a good ending? That's really surprising honestly! I haven't read the book or any outside sources so hopefully someone can explain 🙇♀️
I love how he murders Paul Allen, goes to his apartment right after, and says "as I walk into Paul Allen's apartment, I have a moment of sheer panic....when I realize his apartment overlooks central park; it's better than mine". Fucking classic.
Lexington Deville84 IS that in A.P. #1 or #2? I own A.P. #1, and I don't remember any girl eating a rat! I've seen the movie maybe 10x so... have a nice night!
Dor fuller I meant to say two separate chapters in the book. One is where Bateman kills a girl by using a rat in the most gruesome way possible. And the other one is where he cooks another dead girl and tries to eat her intestines.
Don Winslow Actually when Bale was sent Batman Begins’ script he thought he was sent the script of American Psycho’s prequel named “Bateman Begins”. True story
Patrick: *kills hookers just for fun* Audience: _omg this is such a meme lmao_ Patrick: *kicks the shit out of a stray dog* Audience: _Hey stop that you meanie_ 🥺
It always bothers me how people just shrug off human deaths in movies or shows but as soon as a animal dies they start crying, I get animals are seen as cute and innocent as a baby but the overreaction people make cause a dog dies in a movie is just annoying to me
just saying dogs survied Chernobyl by staying as a pack and looking after each other a homeless dude depends on the charity of others for his meaningless existnece . most homeless people chooose to live like that
@@babyinthecorner6344 I mean the main thing is that she never questions whether he said, "Mergers & Acquisitions," so there was no need for him to confirm that.
@@HankTheTank23 he thought she heard him correctly the first time which is why he leaned in with actual interest talking with her. Then she said merger and acquisitions and he immediately lost interest and maybe got sad a little bit knowing she wasnt like he thought she was, like him.
Personally I'm more inclined to believe that Patrick's awful deeds (atleast most of them) were actually real. It emphasises just how self absorbed the world around him is that they didn't even notice. Having them be in his imagination sort of takes away that aspect of the film.
@@ayoogunsakin9223 Yes but so many people mistake each other for someone else, like Paul Allen mistaking Patrick for Marcus, so the lawyer made the same mistake
@@fro_e Yeah I think the trade off is if he's imagining them it's a fascinating depiction of his insanity, but I prefer to think most of them are real too
@@liampowell5014 little did Bateman know, but in asking to see Paul Allen's card, he's just brought their game of little league to an end, and everyone else knows it
I remember an interesting interview, in which a psychopath explained he assumed everyone was faking emotions, emulating empathy and acting out appropriate responses, until they reached a certain age in childhood and realised everyone else was actually doing it for real. I think the chap being interviewed said his epiphany was around the 8 or 9 years old mark.
A lot of psychopaths actually can feel emotions and so on It’s just that they are also really good at faking/controlling them, like to the point where they do it as a normal habit.
+MrLilfee disagree, I think the film is in parts, especially the first half, the funniest I have ever seen. At the same time I struggle to watch it all the way through, I think because I find it so empty and crushing on the mind and soul. That is of course the purpose of the film, to show how empty and shallow the world Bateman lives in and how mad it drives him. But I dont know, I respect it but dont think its a great film. Ironically like I said it gets more laughs out of me than any other film.
Fuckin disturbing scene honestly. I think about civilizations like the Roman or British empires. In this scene, and others surely, you can see he believes himself way above the homeless guy, maybe even humanity itself. "You just have a negative attitude, I don't have anything in common with you." Like he's undeserving of the same existence as himself. Don't mean to rant it's just you know its art when it makes you think. The director/writer had something to say.
The laundry shop lady said "so dirty so dirty so dirty, so troubled (cleaning process), need to breach, so dirty so dirty.." til Bale said in 1:45 "I'll kill you" the lady reply "Ai ya (toughly translated like "what the hell...."), Then replied "Mr., Mr., I want to tell you, Mr, Mr, ..." Until Bale replied " I don't understand you!!"....
To break up some awkward silence during a client meeting, I decided to spark some laughter and did the business card scene when clients handed over the card....let's just say that there was 30 sec of just stare and silence and it was yeah more awkward
I still do. Initially it did not go down well because they didnt get it then during the follow up, I mentioned this clip and they wrote back.....at least you didnt enter with a bat, nail gun and murder us. My manager didnt get it and thought I was being inappropriate but I told him.....work shouldnt be all doom and gloom.
@@wym5311 - I always thought that “company culture” stuff in college was bs. But it’s actually incredibly important. I can’t stand working with a bunch of stiffs who act like everything is the end of the world and have no sense of humor. I understand work is important, but I personally need some casualness, joking and a friendly atmosphere. I can’t grind auditing hedge funds day in day out when everyone acts like tomorrow is the deadline year round and everyone’s mom just died. It’s toxic, burns people out and doesn’t promote comradery.
This movie is so quotable, filled with amazing gems like "I'm on the verge of tears by the time we arrive, as I'm positive we won't get a decent table... But we do .. And relief washes over me in an awesome way" "YOUR COMPLIMENT WAS SUFFICIENT, LOUIS" "I like to dissect girls, do u know I'm utterly insane?" "Patrick is that you?!" "No, Louis, it's not me, you're mistaken." & finally "WHERE did you get that over night bag?!"
@@89thaharmaiiioptreshenanig3 I agree!! He’s my favorite actor. I think he would’ve made a fantastic joker & probably would’ve wanted the role if he didn’t already do American psycho (and was already Batman lol)
the thing is - the book is pretty horrific. By that I mean especially how detailed the torture/death/cannibalism scenes are described, as well as Bateman's descent into madness. It's all very nightmare-ish, and, at least to me, something really hard to read through. However, the movie apperently does focus more on the ironic, sarcastic, dark-comedy aspects of the story (I havent seen it yet but that's what seems to be the case), which I much prefere, to be honest. I feel like the book could have achieved in me the same level of "hatred with a small amout of sympathy"I felt towards Bateman without having to make me read several highly disturbing and disgusting pages describing down to the smallest detail what he did to his victims. Besides, I feel like the main focus of the story was the criticism the author was trying to make towards that society, and the gore porn at least in my opinion, took away from that.
The amazing thing about this moment is that putting reindeer antlers on him was a capital offense of such great magnitude, that Bateman simply pretended that it did not happen because of where he was. A normal person would have gone "Oh! Ok, thanks" and maybe taken them off.
Dude the scene where he kills the homeless man is just so brutal and a mark of how psychopathic the guys really is. I think people who exalt Bateman's character are not getting the full point.
As a graphic design student I gotta say Paul Allens card is just perfect, but also just love this scene because that's how nitpicky you gotta be as a designer, even though they are all such plainmostly identical business cards.
"I want... to fit.... in." Me too Bateman, me too. This movie perfectly satirizes the zeitgeist of the late 80s and yuppie culture's obsession with social status. Conformity is a facade. Deep down l feel the same way; I (we) am utterly insane and despicable, and there is no catharsis.
@Hugo Also shit people who haven’t worked a day in their life say. There’s a difference between working and having a job. Work gets you dirty, tired and beat. A job can do that, but there’s plenty out there that don’t. I tell ya, one of my jobs has me workin’.
Daisy:"so what do you do?" Bateman"well, I'm currently into murders and executions mostly" Daisy:"Do you like it?" Bateman:"Well, it depends. Why?" Daisy:"Because most guys i know, who work at mergers and acquisitions, really don't like it" Bateman:"Oh.so where do you work out?"
i like how later on in the movie, his main excuse for leaving is that he had to return some videotapes. we see it when patrick attempts to strangle luis, minutes later when he is back in his office being questioned by detective kimball, and lastly when he breaks up with evelyn. also another short running joke i liked was that in the beginning of the movie when bateman had to leave, the other person would say, "oh you’re going to _____ isn’t that uptown/downtown?"
American psycho does an amazing job of showing the deep subtle horrors of corporate life in cities like New York. Pettiness, fashion and vice. The epitome of a psychopath’s dwellings.
The most unsung hero of this movie was a guy from Wales called Richey Edwards who had nothing whatsoever to do with the book or movie. He played guitar and wrote lyrics for a band called Manic Street Preachers who Christian Bale idolizes. It was Richey Edward's lyrics in the MSP song "Patrick Bateman" that inspired Bale to take the role in the first place. 2 days before the beginning of an American tour in February 1995, he walked out of a hotel in London, never to be seen again.
there are some keen parallels, but i find bateman's psychosis far more penetrating. we only ever see dennis trying to acquire social capital with either success of failure. But this movie is really a memoir of a psychopath--a man who is empty but trying feel something, trying to learn something true about himself. So what is a triumph for dennis' character (proving his value to others) is a fruitless necessity for patrick. He does not satiate himself on social capital the way Dennis does. He has plenty of it, and finds no solace in it. His failure to feel any reward for his efforts drives him to establish some kind of connection with his disparate cohorts, namely by inflicting on them the pain that he feels inside. It's a great movie, and a great character.
I don't think anyone could portray a terrifying man like this, other than a female director. There's something so new and so different about her explanation of this man. And it's fucking terrifying.
just realised he's not in the pursuit of quality when he "goes all the way up here" to get his sheets cleaned, hes going out of the way because he doesn't want people to see him
Goodbye horses but Silence of the Lambs and Clerks double dibbed that one. Other honorable mentions Psychedelic Furs Love my Way and if they wanted to get over the top dark comedic play Pat Benatar's Hit me with your best shot or Bryan Adams Cuts like a knife during a murder scene or two LOL! And as far as Huey Lewis I want a new drug would have fit in well too:).
