Begum Akhtar is undoubtedly the queen of Urdu or Hindi Ghazals. This compilation album comprises of some of the Best Of Begum Akhtar Ghazals. Akhtari Bai Faizabadi, also known as Begum Akhtar (7 October 1914 - 30 October 1974), was a well known Indian singer of Ghazal, and Dadra, and Thumri genres of Hindustani classical music.
She was given the title of Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazals). Akhtar was barely seven when she was captivated by the music of Chandra Bai, an artist attached to a touring theater group. However at her uncle's insistence she was sent to train under Ustad Imdad Khan, the great Sarangi exponent from Patna, and later under Ata Mohammed Khan of Patiala. Later, she traveled to Calcutta with her mother and learnt music from classical stalwarts like Mohammad Khan, Abdul Waheed Khan of Lahore, and finally she became the disciple of Ustad Jhande Khan. Her first public performance was at the age of fifteen. The famous poetess, Sarojini Naidu, appreciated her singing during a concert which was organized in the aid of victims of the 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake. This encouraged her to continue singing Ghazals with more enthusiasm. She cut her first disc for the Megaphone Record Company, at that time. A number of gramophone records were released carrying her Ghazals, Dadras, Thumris, etc. She was amongst the early female singers to give public concert, and break away from singing in mehfils or private gatherings, and in time came to be known as Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazal). Begum Akhtar's good looks and sensitive voice made her an ideal candidate for a film career in her early years. When she heard great musicians like Gauhar Jaan and Malak Jan, however, she decided to forsake the glamour of the film world for a career in Indian classical music. Her supreme artistry in light classical music had its moorings in the tradition of pure classicism. She chose her repertoire in primarily classical modes: a variety of raags, ranging from simple to complex. After the advent of talkie era in India, Beghum Akhtar acted in a few Hindi movies in the 1930s. East India Film Company of Calcutta approached her to act in "King for a Day" (alias Ek Din Ka Badshah) and Nal Damayanti in 1933. Like others of that era, she sang her songs herself in all her films. She continued acting in the following years. Subsequently Beghum Akhtar moved back to Lucknow where she was approached by the famous producer-director Mehboob Khan, as a result of which she acted in Roti which was released in 1942 and whose music was composed by maestro Anil Biswas."Roti" contained six of her ghazals but unfortunately due to some trouble between producer and director, Mehboob Khan subsequently deleted three or four ghazals from the film. All the ghazals are available on Megaphone gramophone records. Begum Akhtar, meanwhile, left Bombay and returned to Lucknow. Her voice matured with time, adding richness and depth. She sang ghazals and other light classical pieces, singing them in her inimitable style. She has nearly four hundred songs to her credit. She was a regular performer on All India Radio. She usually composed her own ghazals and most of her compositions were raag based. She sang the timeless Bengali classical song "Jochona Koreche Aari".
Begum Akhtar or Akhtari Bai as some fondly remembers her is a true legend in the world of Ghazals. This compilation has some of the Best Ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar, such as o Jara Jab Bhi Bimar and Wafa Nahi Na Sahi. This one is a sheer bliss for Ghazal lovers.

@@bhartitripathi3284 WRONG! Urdu is part Farsi and part Arabic; nothing to do with hindi which is derived from Sanskrit. Hindi has replaced its harsh sounding Sanskrit words and replaced them with softer and sweeter sounding Urdu words and phrases and gradually increased the use of integrating Urdu into hindi and ultimately began identifying Urdu as hindi. Get your facts right, Bhartiji; hindi was NEVER derived from FARSI. It is URDU which is a sister language of FARSI. It is Sanskrit from which hindi is derived.

And what is awadhi boli? How is it that urdu speaking people of pakistan and india are able to understand Hindi movies ?

According to Gulzar(lyricist) more than 70% language used in so called Hindi films in India is Urdu. That is why Pakistani do understand. And only 48% of people in that country speak Urdu. And Jagjit Singh said in an interview that ghazals and nazms cannot be written in Hindi but only geets. Language spoken at the time of Hazrat Amir Khusro r.a in Awadh,is called Khari Boli or Brij Bhasa. Which He used in his Kalam with Farsi Verses.

The origin and development of Urdu has always been a bone of contention among scholars. Even today there is no unanimity with regard to its origin. Different scholars have expressed different opinions by looking at its origin from different perspective. The birth of Urdu language was direct result of the synthesis between the invading armies of Mahmood of Ghazni with the civilian population of the Indian citiesl The word Urdu itself means Lashkar, derived from the Turkish language meaning armies. There are various theories where exactly it was born. One is that it originated in basti Nizamuddin of Nizamuddin Aulia and Amir Khusrau. Another is that it was born in Baba Shaikh Farid a Pak Pattan in the 13th centuary and its old name is Multani or Old Lahori. When Babur came to India he did not find anything exclusively Hindu or exclusively Muslim. he talked of the Hindustani way of Life.

The historians are of the view that the cultural contacts of the Indian with the Arabs and the Iranians had been very old. These contacts were established long before the conquest of Mohammad Ghauri as a result of which the linguistic interaction between two communities began outside the Punjab and hectic political activities started in North India in A.D. 1193. The impact of this linguistic interaction and cohesion is well evidenced in the literary and other documents of those days, which assimilated quite a number of words from Arabic and Persian. The people who have moved from the Punjab to Delhi in A.D. 1193 had brought with them at least four languages viz, Arabic, Persian, Turkish and an early form of Punjabi. The natives on the other hand had promoted the growth of indigenous dialects, which were the off shoots of western Hindi that had developed from Shaurseni Apabhramsh. When Delhi was made the capital the Muslims sovereignty in India and when it assumed the importance of the military head quarters, the new settlers and the local people had frequent opportunities to get together. As a result of the political, social and cultural contacts between the two speech communities, there evolved a mix form of language known as Rekhta whose base was largely supplied by Khari Boli, a dialect of western Hindi. It assimilated a large number of words from Persian and Arabic. Besides lexical items, it also absorbed numerous expressions, phrases and clauses from Persian. Since it owed its existence to the indigenous dialects of India, the Muslim sovereigns called this language Hindi, i.e., the language of India. It was also known as Hindavī. In the course of its development, it assumed various names like Zabān-e-Delhi, Zabān-e-Hindustān, Zabān-e-Urdū-e-mu’allā, Zabān-e-Urdu and in later period simply Urdu.

It is has nothing to do with politics. It is a matter of acknowledging true identity of a language, be it any language. You are a pathetic bigot who calls a demand to correctly identify Urdu as Urdu and not hindi divicive politics while stealing Urdu and giving it a fake name. Why don't you post telugu music and call it hindi? You are a biased idiot ashamed of your own language and call beautiful Urdu as Hindi. Never in a million years will hindi or any other language in Insia have the beauty and charm of URDU, you bigot! It is you who are divisive, jealous and politically motivated and above all, AN UNEDUCATED FOOL.
