i don't speak Portuguese, i've never been to Brazil, I don't have any connection to Brazil or the Brazilian community at all. But man this music soothes me, it calms me, i don't understand a word is says...well, maybe a few words as i do speak spanish....but this music just speaks to me and settles in me so effortlessly.
Same here. I got a DNA test done to check if I have any Brazilian ancestors. Results are coming in soon. I find the language and music very pleasant to the ear. Update: The results came out with 16% Iberian DNA 🤩

"His voice was one of the most intimate sounds of the 20th century - more melodic than a sigh, more rhythmic than chitchat, only just barely. Every syllable that appeared on his lips carried an air of effortlessness, but Gilberto had worked hard to locate that sacred place where a human breath becomes music."
If butterflies or small birds made music I think it’d sound something like this. The way bossa nova flutters around and gliiiides is the thing that’s makes the genre so addicting to me!! It’s so beautiful and peaceful.
I started studying Portuguese when I met my wife to be who is from Portugal. My first teacher was an American who learned Portuguese in Brazil. Her passion for teaching us about Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language was a great inspiration. Forty years after that first class my own passion for speaking this beautiful language is as strong as ever. When I first started listening to bossa nova I could appreciate the beauty without understanding the words. Over time listening to the music and learning the meaning of the the words has made bossa nova my favorite music. This really is beautiful music and understanding it has helped my to learn to speak Brazilian Portuguese and has also inspired me to learn more about Brasil , it’s history and it’s culture.
@@Grimm-- The difference between the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portugal is also in the way sentences are formulated, in the words and their meanings and in other linguistic issues, but the accent is the main thing. Because it has continental dimensions, Brazil has a vast amount of its own accents as well. It may even happen that Brazilians from different regions have some difficulty communicating, so imagine the difference between the Portuguese spoken in South America, Europe and Africa...
His voice is like crystal clear water and he sings ever so freely, so naturally and so rhythmically like dancing waves. I believe his songs will be timeless. Eternal beauty. 🌅⛲💓
The Brazilian music establishment pushed against MPB, Bossa Nova. Saying they sang “out of tune “ . So João Gilbert wrote one of his greatest hits “Desafinado” (out of tune) .LOL
My mother used to play this ALL THE TIME when I was a child...she mightve been a violent bipolar but man, when she put this on stereo, she calmed right down.... She was a different person...contemplative, expressive, creative, her true God self. Miss that. Thank you.❤
No matter how stressful this pandemic or economic situation has gotten, when I wake up have my coffee, water my plants and put Joao on the stereo, the day always looks better.
I am a African American and when I listen to this music for the first time i really connected with this form of Art i had to have been 38 I'm 52 now still listening just takes your Spirit to a positive place when hell is breaking around you 🙏🏼🎶🎶💗💗
The girl from Ipanema was a done thing, and then 10 years later I wound up in Brazil, loved all of it, learned português, and stayed 20 years left for 20, but, am back now 73 yrs old, to stay.
I'm going on 72. In 1979 I was wandering through the Botanic Gardens in Belem, and a gentleman overheard me chatting with a travel companion, he approached us and asked if we'd be interested in teaching English at a school he ran in Rio, he'd get us an apartment, pay wages etc. We were going that way so I thought it was a great offer but unfortunately my partner spoke no Portuguese and had to decline. As I was his translator I had to stick with him. Almost every day I think back to that day, and what if? WHAT IF? Our lives are full of so many what ifs.
im just starting to learn bossa nova guitar, after losing some love of indie pop and folk music its a contridiction between sad and happy sounds in my mind
@@dudeman5303 It is still not the same thing, since the mixture has already become something new, when we mix the color blue and yellow we have green which is no longer blue nor yellow is green, bossa nova had little influence from jazz more on the part of jobim that I had also studied this rhythm, but its main base was always samba, which even invented a new beat on the guitar by joao gilberto for the created rhythm that is bossa nova.
my dad used to listen to this album a lot when i was a kid, and all i could remember was The Girl From Ipanema, but not the lyrics! so ive been trying to find it for a while, and im so relieved that i finally have!
This IS music. Joao being one of the founding members of Bossa Nova, put his eternal imprint with his words, songs, and guitar. It was said that his breath was music. I was saddened by his death ln 2019, and in particular the circumstances. Joao Gilberto lives in my soul.
the first song made me cry, and i dont know why.. it just synced with deeper parts of my childhood and made me think of a simpler time.. life was hard for the adults around me.. it shouldve been hard for me too but they acted as my shield and i felt like a knight, invincible.. unaware that one day my shield would be taken from me, and the small monsters i easily would defend my castle from only became larger and larger as the years went on..
Quiero aprenderlo.
João Gilberto's Bossa Nova is the epitome of serene, beautiful music. This playlist is ideal for finding peace and joy in every moment. Wishing everyone good health and blissful listening!

This music is timeless and transcends national identity or boundaries. What is amazing is this grand Brazilian music premiered in the early 60s. A fantastic innovation for that time and still today it echoes sweet and beautiful and inspiring for musicians and listeners of all stripes, and age groups: Antonio (Tom) Jobim, Gilberto, songbird Astrud Gilberto, and the great Stan Getz were pioneers of this fantastic music from Brazil, one of the earth's great peoples.
Hi Jose in Colombia from Leslie in U.S. I found your comment poetic, appropriate for this very magical music of the great Joao Gilberto. Love to Brazil and all the world, plus Merry Christmas ALL!
I thank joao gilberto for his music because it calms my mood from being super angry to being extremely relaxed. Everyone who is here is because we value the talent of a good person. I admire joao gilberto for his talent.
Simplesmente!
It must be the whole world loves this music. By the way, hi to you in Argentina from me in U.S., plus much love echoed to Brazil, so special in this world for being the homeland of Joao Gilberto and many spellbinding, amazingly talented musicians! Much Love Always!
Felicidades! Obrigado!!! Adoraria bailar este ritmo.
Man,that opening track! Joao gets the groove going so strong and yet so effortlessly. A lesser musician would be it to death, monotonously so. Gilberto stokes it like a low flame, making it simmer so wonderfully. "Less is more" never sounded so good! My favorite "get up and get going" track, always convinces me that I-we-can make it,after all.
Hi, Mr. Charles Davis: Love your positivity. Brazilian Bossa Nova IS magical, and I am so glad the world received the gift of Joao Gilberto's very beautiful music. Merry Christmas ALL.
Today is the first time I am listening to this piece of music, I started about 12 mid day and it's 7: 30 pm now, all I can say it is simply therapeutic, I poured myself a drink of Vodka and tonic and I find myself in a different zone, Jamaica is the land of reggae music, but if you need something to appeal to your inner self, soothes You, relaxes You, clams you and propels you to a place of peace and share tranquility, this is my stop, today was a beautiful day.
@@Dalest22 the world is kinda screwed up right now and at the same time we have these go to places where the sound of music can make such a difference, thank you Brazil for this sound.
Bossa Nova is healing! I am brazilian and I also feel this magic that people are talking about here. Yes, Bossa Nova is a healing music, also for us in Brasil. We love it everywhere. I am a musician and I can tell how delicious is to play and sing it! Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!
LOVE me some Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto/Tom Jobim et al. and Bossa Nova/Tropicalia!! 🎶💞 I've loved it since I was 7 or 8, hearing my father's records. It's more powerful than any modern pharmaceuticals!
