The thing is, I wonder if he really wants more minutes? As much as more minutes sounds great to someone like us who never played more than prolly 30 games a year, these guys play 82! So I think one of the best roles to have on a team would be to be a backup who plays 26 mins a night( that’s still a lot. A little less than your typically HS star plays for the entire game. A lot of college stars only play 30) and have a role where when you are on the court, you are expected to shoot and score as much as possible and that’s IT. Isn’t that a dope job? So it’s not as exhausting as being the teams true #1 option, but you get to be the teams #1 option when you are on the court most of the time but without the exhausting physical burden. I think the only reason soemone wouldn’t love the job is if they really want a lot of accolades and certain statistical thresholds were important for them. Basically an ego thing. If your ego has to be a starter and has to score 20 a game and has to make all star, maybe it’s not for that type of person. But someone with a healthy ego? Outside of that it’s like the BEST job! You get to take more shots than probably all but 2 of the starters, but in less minutes. So basically you probably take more shots per minute than anyone on the team unless you have a top 15 scorer. Clarkson takes 14 shots per 26 minutes. Mitchell takes 20 shots per 34 minutes. So Mitchell is a fringe rising suptetstsr and even he barley gets that many more shots per minute that the guy in the scoring role off the bench

Does anyone else think it would be so fuking cool to see NBA players truly start to embrace and fight for the scoring role off the bench? I think that would be awesome, if the 6th man/volume bench scorer role became as desirable and popularized as the starting guard and wing roles. Obviously we do see guys here and there who have healthy enough ego and mindsets to not care about starting at all and they embrace the bench and thrive and actually prefer it( they never start even if their position is injured in the starting lineup). But I want to see that go to the next level. Like, you know how some teams have had 2 lethal PGs on the same team? Or two similar wings. Like Russ and Haeden or PG Kawhi or Tatum brown. Wouldn’t it be awesome if one of them became the leader of the first unit and the other became the leader of the 2nd? And then of Course they would end up spending some time together on the court in the 2nd and 4tg qtrs, but I would love that. And it would be like, starting or not you would play the exact same 34 minutes or so you know? And what would also end up happening indirectly is starting roles would become less important to players egos, and it would all be more about strategy when it came to who started and who didn’t. I think this is a level of progress in bball that would take the game to the next level. AND I think it’s becoming more possible with how the league is just getting SO deep with talent. You know? We are getting to a point where it’s harder and harder to keep your role over these rookies coming into the league, like SO many lower drafted rookies are ready to play a role instantly and so..it just seems like more and more players are not getting a chance to show what they can do simply because the league is SO talented. I mean look at clarkson and Josh Hart last night. And it happens all the time every year too. Like I remember Jordan Poole and Anfernee Simmons LAST year, when they got a chance to be the man cuz the stars were injured? They’d legit go for like 30-40 and maybe 10 made 3s. And also Maxey! He averaged like 9 as a rookie but he also had 30 poont gmaes when he got to fill in for the stars. And I feel like there are way more guys currently in the league who could also drop 30 easily if they simply had a bigger role, but the league is so stacked so they can’t quite show their ability. Players are getting better and better younger and younger. And idk, I think it would be really cool if what happened to counteract this issue of not having enough chances for all of the talented players is if we stop seeing 5 men get 36 mins and then a couple get 20 pff the bench. Instead what if we start to see 2 full 5 man lineups and eveyone plays about the same 25 mins or so, maybe except for the couple elite players on each team. And like I said, the top 5 players are split between The two five man rotations. I also wonder if we might start to eventually see a decrease in one player having insane volume and scoring stats on teams and instead we start to legitimately see the number of players who score in the teens double. So instead of 20 players scoring over 20, we see any extra 40 players scoring 13-17. Of course we would still have the players who are just better than everyone else at scoring and they would still benefit the team by scoring 30 a night, but I think the level of great you would need to be to deserve more shots than anyone else is going to increase and increase and increase. So unless you have someone on the team who is clearly elite and able to combine elite efficiency WITH elite volume, everyone gets about the same amount of volume and it’s truly equal opportunity. I think this is the next evolution. It’s like a combination of the insane individual skill era with the team friendly offense and ball movement and look for the best shot no matter who it is style. I’d love to see it. And the guys who refuse to adapt and grow get left behind( just like how we see players who don’t evolve when the game starts to change get left behind every era, like current Russ in LA for example)
