@@chillatrix They literally put out these compilations all of the time. You also have no respect for their work by doing this. When the inevitable YIIK compilation comes out, it now won't do as well because a lot of people will say "Well I've seen it already, so I'll skip this". If I have to explain to you why that hurts the content creator, then you probably need a caretaker.

They're not distancing themselves from Chris. If they were, they wouldn't have done LPs when he last visited, and Dingdong wouldn't have joined in LPs when he last visited Chris.

@@MoonspiderHugs Chris mentioned that he talks to DD&J often in the same post that the final cancelation was made public. DD&J seem to be just done with the whole LP thing and want to focus on their game projects from now on. They do occasionally stream though.

She also doesn’t really add much as a character to the rest of the cast. Doesn’t play off them or have any sort of interesting dynamic aside from being Alex’s toy Vella, as creepy as that sounds. Like while the cast and their dynamics are rough and could be better, they still have stuff that could be interesting. Essentia has nothing

There are solid lore reasons for why all this is. Doesn’t mean you have to like it, but it’s all planned out in a way that makes sense, while also not being satisfying in a traditional narrative sense. Of course, if you were expecting anything resembling a traditional narrative in a game with this title, I’ve got several bridges to sell you.

I think this is a more common opinion on YiiK than any amount of admiration is.

I just want to see the rest of the shit they recorded of the game itself! I watched this entire series the entire time, I suffered through YIIK at the same pace they did, why do I have to go find someone else's playthrough to see the literal final cutscene of the game or play it myself

It’s less a sequel and more just an update/overhaul that keeps the core premise and most of the script while adding a bunch of new stuff and polish, a la No Man’s Sky. Whether it will be as successful as that redemption story is still heavily in question.

@@BaddabyThe thing is, they are keeping most of the stuff people enjoyed riffing on like the vast majority of Alex’s dialogue, the awkward character relationships, and the weird visuals, while fixing the bad stuff that people genuinely hated suffering through, like load times, crashes, and the battle system, as well as making the monologues more visually interesting. It’s still gonna be real interesting to watch people react to it, especially the people expecting “vibrating with motion” and the like to be edited out, when all that goodness is firmly staying in.

That’s an interesting take! Since that was part of the hasty edit to make the game not end in Alex’s suicide, I don’t know if that interpretation was intended, but I enjoy that view. Since that classic RPG get-up crew is supposed to literally be you and your actual friends, just presented in warped Alex-o-vision like the rest of the game, the main thrust of that scene is bigging you up and making you and your friends look cool and thus admirable enough to Alex to inspire him to change from within and not follow the Essentia into death. But I do enjoy the idea of your interpretation - love to see a game execute that with more build-up.

@@knucklejoe26 if you don't know, informing oneselves ain't that hard. but TLDR: Egoraptor made a game that was... let's say not too cool on its representation of liking men, DD&J didn't find funny being a couple themselves and Ego went on an Ego-trip and harassed them off the internet, but people still watch the game grumps cuz i guess making a f e t i s h game and doing a a type of crime involving hate (youtube censors words just reread that word slowly) don't matter cuz haha funny videogame celebrity.

I think you’re mistaking autism with familiarity with and appreciation of a niche art movement.

It’ll be real interesting to see what the general reaction is, because they honestly aren’t changing that much. The plot and characters look to be largely the same, with almost all of the most hated/ridiculed Alex dialogue still present, but given a new visual framing device, as you mention. Will that relatively small change be enough for audiences? The combat is absolutely better but still feels too fiddly and rough in a way that still causes the battles to distract from the puzzle narrative - but they are undeniably shorter, so will that be enough for audiences? The biggest question is how much more obvious will the puzzle narrative and its solution (baked right into the title of the game) be, and will that being more obvious allow audiences to give YiiK the benefit of the doubt while still being an RPG where you are asked to roleplay as an unlikable, insufferable character who drove away all his real friends and has to invent fake ones? And will the new characters successfully make it clear that YiiK is trying to criticize the fetishization of asian girls and not just repeat it? If the Acck team can pull it off, kudos to them, but it’s going to be fascinating to see if all that hard work to make YiiK more palatable while not losing its core identity will pay off, or if people will see that “vibrating with motion” or “ginger is OUR word, don’t use that word” or any of the others are still there and just write it off again.

It’s one of many clues as to the nature of the game’s reality. The game is hitting you over the head with evidence that Alex is an extremely unreliable narrator who is unable to look at reality head-on. This is supposed to build on from the infamous “NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR DEAD SISTER” scene, where Alex is desperately trying to not think about his OWN missing/dead sister, Allison. This is intended to culminate in the player realizing that everything we are shown in the game is Alex-o-vision, inside Alex’s head. Because the real Alex is a lonely goon in the 2010’s who drove all his friends away. The problem is that this doesn’t really click until the second playthrough at least, and for most people the third or fourth playthrough, which is a frankly ludicrous amount of playtime to ask for an already 20-30 hour slog with no mechanical New Game Plus.

@@infsm27 BowlBo has been in production for longer than the YIIK finale and the last progress update they had for it was in 2021. I'd bet Chris is just getting more involved with animation again since Zach's show is actually popular on something other than just RU-vid. Apparently there's even been a couple times in some streams where he's mentioned BowlBo and people are starting to think that's gonna be cancelled too

The funniest thing is that the multiverse in Yiik doesn’t even matter. Vella comes from a world exactly like the one she’s in and doesn’t have any issue adjusting to her new reality. Our Alex is the only one that matters because he “developed” and became a better person. All this alternate dimension stuff could be cut out of the game and be replaced with spooky supernatural stuff. You could just change proto Alex to some evil deity and it wouldn’t change anything because Alex and Proto Alex are two completely separate people. And Michael’s soul space journey can very easily be reworked to his soul being temporarily severed from his body or simply cut it out the game since it doesn’t even effect the plot, it’s just meaningless conflict that ultimately goes nowhere.

Multiverses are in the zeitgeist for a reason - we can culturally feel the endtimes coming and wish there were a way around it.

Chris said in an Elder Scrolls stream that it basically was too much effort, not enough interest, and schedule conflicts.

Even disregarding that art is subjective, it’s hard for plots to be inherently good or bad, because plots are just the shape of an idea - it’s the execution that counts. The “plot”, the basic description of a hot dog sounds fucking awful, yet hot dogs are delicious. The plot of YiiK is straightforward and solid. A barely graduated pretentious 2010’s goon is unable to deal with the reality of being an adult and mentally retreats to a vidjya-flavoured nostalgic delusion where he must escape or die. There are compelling, understandable, and satisfying ways to tell that story, and there are boring, inexplicable, annoying ways to tel that story.
