Lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every time I watch this scene. Wonderfully written. And all actors thought this was the last scene ever, so there was real emotions going on as well. RIP to all stars of this show that are not with us today.
Who remembers watching this at Christmas time in 1996? I remember seeing it with my family and being very moved by it It already feels like another lifetime ago. I was still a child, my nan was still alive. I remember Christmas being exciting all those years ago and Christmas night we would sit down to watch Only Fools and Horses, One Foot in the Grave and all those wonderful shows back then. Now i am older, the magic isn't here anymore, the world changed.
That is so true. You could be my Daughter writing that, as I remember being with her, at my Mum's/her Nanny's house every Saturday night. Just like you, we loved that period of our lives. My Mum is no longer with us & I am now a Nanny with 3 lovely Grandchildren myself, but things will never quite be the same again. The world has indeed changed & no longer having your Mummy, makes that harder to bear 😢.
Exactly this. I watched it with all my family at my nan’s house too. 3 episodes over 3 nights including the Batman and Robin episode. Really very special memories.
I always felt Denzel was the key to this scene. The stare between him and Del where Del was unsure if they were still welcome in the pub. Fantastic acting without saying a word. Perfect.
The "on the slate, Mike" is my favourite del boy moment... In 4 words he's thanking Mike for all the times he sorted him out when he was broke and also acknowledged that he won't need the slate again. While del using the slate always seemed a bit cheeky and funny, in reality, there were times when del didn't have enough money... Him and Mike both knew that... Del shows his gratitude here and Mike knows it. Amazing
@@AGxAG Not enough to stop him going bankrupt it seems. In my head canon, that was the beginning of Mike’s ruin. In the next episode, Sid was running the pub and Mike was in prison for embezzlement. Of course, in reality that was because Kenneth MacDonald ( Mike) had died. But my theory seems about right for the characters.
I always get emotional watching this. My parents owned a pub at the time. There was a TV on a shelf in the and it was absolutely packed. I fondly remember no one being served as everyone including my parents was glued to the screen. I lost my dad suddenly exactly a year later and this always makes me think of him, bright red with laughter and tears running down his face. Utter classic!
Genuinely incredible piece of television. We watched and grew to love the Trotters over the years that Fools was on and the entire nation smiled when they finally made it. They should never have made any more after this, as was originally intended. This trilogy of 1996 Xmas specials was sheer poetry. "This time next year we'll be billionaires" should have remained the last words ever spoken on this once in a lifetime TV Show.
@@liamdunphy7496 Rodney and Cassandra would not have had their gorgeous baby girl if the only fools and horses had ended at Time on our hands so I'm glad it continued
It almost goes unnoticed, but Boycie is superb in this scene. For years Boycie has always rubbed Del's nose in it that he has been the successful one. The big house, nice car, successful business and trophy wife. When everyone starts applauding, you can see that Boycie is annoyed by the Trotters success, but when Del offers Boycie his hand, even someone as stubborn and competitive as Boycie can't help feeling happy for his old friend. A great moment, and brilliant writing.
I'm a 50yr old masculine guy..and I can't watch this scene without tears...it's like we have all been on the journey with them...unrepeatable cast...and the unequalled writing of John Sullivan ...this goes way beyond entertainment
And that was the ruin of Mike- by the next episode ( ok, the actor was dead) but his absence was explained by him being in prison for embezzling the brewery.
I thought this was the best scene in the episode, it was very poignant how the cast were all together one last time and everyone clapping. The part where Del and Boycie shake hands was particularly moving, its like he is slightly reluctant to feel happy for his old friend but in the end the good in him comes out and he does feel happy for them. Also although it wasn't the last scene in the episode i thin k it was the last to be filmed so some of the emotion feels very real. Also i love that music, shame its not available anywhere, one of the nicest pieces of incidental music i've ever heard.
I feel the same Ryan. I love the melancholy feel. I presume Ronnie hazlehurst wrote it. I transcribed it on this RU-vid video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BNvSQMDyZk0.html
I love the moment where everyone goes quite and you can see how nervous and afraid they are, especially Del Boy. This is their haven, where they went at the end of the day to met up with their friends and be with people just like them but in this moment they aren’t sure if they are welcome. They aren’t like everyone else anymore and fear being rejected by them but then the clapping starts and the relief is so obvious, again especially for Del Boy. They see no one is angry or jealous of them but genuinely happy for there success and good fortune. It’s just a few moments of an already great episode and ending (this is the end of the series, no one can convince me otherwise) but it was always the thing most about it
I cried when I saw this and laughed at the same time this was the best of the best the absolute king of comedy I like many followed del and rodders for years it was a must watch there was never a bad episode I've known real del boys but sadly in this clenched arse society we now live in those wonderful days have gone and they were wonderful days sometimes you're living on the edge then a bundle comes along and all's good for a while and so on if we had more Arthur Daley's and del boys our now ex country would be a better and happier place it's all self self now and it ain't gonna get better but I thank you the late wonderful John Sullivan for making us smile at least for half an hour a week
So well capped off by John, a perfect ending to one of the best (probably THE best) sitcom ever created. Genius and a nice touch to have Denzil start the applause as well, one of the more underrated characters but one of the most liked with a heart of gold
This is not OFAH. I mean, those are actors who have a good time, knowing that, that was last shooting of OFAH, the last episode. They are having a good time. You can see that they have joy and a litlle bit of sadness in themselves. :) Thank you guys! You were part of of one great TV show! :)
If I remember, I am sure the statistic was that over half the nation tuned in to watch this. Would any other comedies on their last ever episode (as was thought in 1996) get that these days. I think not. I also watch with a hint of sadness looking at the actors who aren’t with us anymore, plus of course, John Sullivan.
I cant really forgive them for breaking this and busting them down again. Sure Albert had money but this IS the end of th show for me... Absolutely magic and I remember getting a tear in my eye like age 17 or something when this happened.
I remember watching this as a kid with my parents and older brother and sister, I had to google the air date and it was 29/12/96 I was 5 almost 6 which is crazy because its such a crystal clear memory I’d have sworn I was 11/12 but that just tells you everything about Only Fools and Horses it was just one of them once in a lifetime tv programmes that holds a special place for so many people
So a brilliant touching moment second only to Del and Rodney’s farewell at his and Cassandra’s wedding reception still able to make a this grown my tear up to this day.
This has puzzled me for years. At 0:19, I’ve wondered if the Blonde Woman on the right was the actress who played Barmaid ‘Joycie’ in the first episode and early years? Tie in the first episode with the (then) last. Because the shot focused on her. Aged up, different hair and life changes etc can see a similarity.
After all those years of struggling and scraping… Del and Rodney finally made it. Excellent moment. He came into the pub expecting the cold shoulder but even after all that money, he was still good old Delboy.
And then everything was ruined with that utter tripe that was 'If They Could See Us Now.' That motherfucking drivel of an episode that ruined this beautiful ending.
Boycie could no longer boast that he was richest man in The Nag’s Head, after the Trotter family became millionaires. Boycie never wanted any of his friends to get to his status, but Del Boy got there in the end.
Long gone are the days when the local bar was the Community centre for the working men & women. They were a hive of activities, Gossip, Laughter. Now they are either closed down or empty..A traditional way of life gone .
Was only a nipper when this came out but my parents had already made sure I had an early diet of OFAH. Remember sitting watching this with the whole family and everyone smiling at the final 15 mins of the episode. Then my Nan started shedding a tear realising that the journey was complete and it was all over. Then my grandad and mum followed. I’ll never forget that. Of course then you had the 3 episodes that came a few years later. The first two I enjoyed. Sleepless in Peckham. Not so much. Maybe the worst ever episode and a very week ending. This will always be the end of the journey in my eyes. End of an era. One that British sitcom will never hit the heights of again. Come back 1990s 😭
They should have ended the series at this episode instead of the specials between 2001-2003, it made Del and Rodney's dream come true of becoming millionaires after all the years of grafting and working hard. They don't make them like this anymore!!
Brings back memories should have been the last show i loved them from Ireland i was a little del boy den was 10 to 17th on and off den became a drug addict if I could go back in time i be a better person. From Ireland with love
