Rone is a clever writer and a charismatic performer, as well as potentially the funniest battle rapper of all time. But one huge way in which he stands out, not necessarily for better or worse imo, is that his performances feel more like ted talks than battle rap rounds. He doesn’t rebuttal, he doesn’t freestyle, he doesn’t react to his opponents much; he writes these fantastic essayistic deconstructions of people, but you could put him alone on a stage with a picture of the person he’s talking about behind him on a projector and it wouldn’t change much. Doesn’t feel like he engages with the medium he uses, like his rounds are completely isolated from the context of being a battle rap, despite being themselves constructed in line with battle rap conventions. Idk just something that I find oddly striking every time I watch him. Regardless, absolutely unique and borderline legend of the craft, will always find him entertaining.
