Today we welcome Dr. Antonio Damasio. He is an internationally recognized neuroscientist whose extensive research has shaped the understanding of neural systems and consciousness. With over a hundred journal articles and book chapters, he has earned many prestigious awards throughout his career. Currently, he serves as University Professor, the David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience, Psychology, and Philosophy, and director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California. His books Descartes’ Error, Looking for Spinoza, Self Comes to Mind, The Strange Order of Things, and Feeling & Knowing, have been published in translation and are taught in universities throughout the world.
In this episode, I talk to Antonio Damasio about consciousness. People often think that the mind and consciousness are the same thing, but Dr. Damasio disputes this notion. He argues that it’s the complex relationship of both our brains and bodies that makes sentient thought possible. Homeostatic feelings like hunger and pain developed before emotions; and along with it came consciousness. We also touch on the topics of perception, mental illness, evolution, panpsychism, AI and machine learning.

27:00 ! emotions and feelings are similar but it’s better to attribute emotions to self concept and feelings to personal identity (more complicated than that but it’s simpler). Emotions and feelings are similar to the vibration and sound resulting from striking metal, assuming that metal represents morals and values...and that relates to the self.

They Hallucinate a lot! Emotions, morals, values,….etc are just a part of the repository that belongs to self concept. Humans create imaginary values to things through personal identity too, and create principles based on built-in morals and values, but they can create principles based misunderstandings, myths, …..etc They mix things up as usual!

Mind is a larger process that includes, consciousness type one, thoughts,…etc. But it’s not an entity!

57:00 they can’t differentiate between consciousness type one and type two (basically they don’t know that there are two types of consciousness!) artistic creativity is relatively different from scientific creativity, but in any case consciousness type one and personal identity are involved in this later (they are the means of conscious communication with the world)! It’s far more complicated than that (oversimplified).

Brainstem and the surrounding area upwards is related to self concept. but the main location of self concept is the brainstem. Brainstem Limbic system Cortex But self concept reaches the cortex, it’s what generates both personal identity and consciousness type one (Simultaneously).

Very likely space is one indivisible unit and fine structure constant is a sign of maintaining space as one indivisible unit,….. etc Future generations must focus on connecting both levels (subatomic and cosmological levels), because they are strongly connected to have the ability to understand the fundamentals of physics.

Schizophrenia is related to kind of split between self concept and personal identity (even though what generates personal identity is self concept itself), but that has to do with psychological trauma,….etc and the inner thoughts is complex (there’s dialogue between personal identity and consciousness type one “personal identity uses consciousness type one to recognise the inner and outer worlds”, and other hidden dialogue between self concept and personal identity “similarly even though self concept is what generates personal identity” ), in severe psychological trauma the level of consciousness type one becomes lower and sometimes …… this topic is complicated topic but the above mentioned is enough.

Consciousness type two: it’s consciousness too and it’s a tool too, how do you recognise your dreams?! just miraculously?! You use consciousness type two to recognise your dreams. Consciousness type two which just a tool is involved in many vital processes, humans use consciousness type unknowingly, for instance during driving a car, sport games,…etc (cerebellum)

55:00 weird! consciousness type one is a process generated by self concept concurrently with personal identity, consciousness type one is a tool to recognise the inner and outer worlds that requires the brain, the mechanism of consciousness type one is very sophisticated that will take ling time to understand (it needs far more advanced mathematics , physics,…etc). creativity is related to self concept and consciousness type two but consciousness type one could involve in creativity too. People who suffer from psychological problems, whether sudden or over a long period of time, usually have a reduced level of consciousness type one . A person has a personal identity and level of consciousness type one as long as he is awake, and the level depends on the individual’s condition. It is difficult to adapt my own thoughts to their thoughts to be easier to understand (different logic) and they mix things up with a lack of understanding, but that’s my best and not good somehow.

Neural activity must be studied in the science of embryonic development, especially the brain. There is something that uses genes with an advanced coding system (genes are just a tool in the coding process). This will not be easy or sufficient due to the current limited scientific and technological capabilities, but it is just a first step that may reveal an important activity. . (Brainstem doesn’t play a main role suddenly, it’s probably at the early stages The process of embryo development).
