4:12 I never noticed the 5 dinosaurs actually go to sleep in Sharptooths print. The same monster who destroyed something dear to each dino. They slept in unison and peace in a mark that scarred each of them different. I'm gonna go cry now
If you've watched the later movies and the series, Spike can "technically" talk. All the sounds and grunts he makes are him actually talking. His brain is wired differently that he hears words differently them the other. Spike knows that. He's very much aware that the others don't understand his words, but it doesn't him nor any of them from being equal friends. You could tell as far back from the very first movie that Spike was just as intelligent as the others, and he picks up on things rather quickly. True, he can be distracted by food, but he's gotten much better with that when he needs to focus, both in play and when in danger. Spike can't help his appetite as all spike tails have it. Yet it's his love for food as well as his gentle, peaceful nature that he believes brings people together. He HATES fighting, especially when they're arguing about pointless things. He's also not the "follower" he seems to be. He hates going on adventure because they're always getting into danger, yet he sticks with his friends out of his own free will, both out of loyalty and because he's protective of them, especially his sister Ducky. He knows he's needed.
As someone who owns a pet tortoise, Spike is the most accurate tortoise portrayed in animation… and he’s a stegosaurus! You can tell the animators took time to get to know these creatures, because so many people treat reptiles like they don’t have feelings or unique personalities.
Spike reminds me of my husband when we first got together he was quiet, sleepy and always hungry :) I did a lot of the talking and always the energize one, eventually he came out of his shell and spoke more and became athletic but he still has a great appetite lol thats why I love cooking
He is the one I remember the most about and the only one I remember the name of. Something about him just always got to me. I remember the only time I shared a tear watching this was because of something that had to do with him. I think it was the same moment when we saw the world through his eyes and learned that he only sees in purple... idk
@@joannacrickenberger7627 Maybe they meant that Spike cannot swim for long or if the water is deep. The pool is deep, but I think he was able to paddle through it because he was expecting it. That's just my guess though.
One big mystery about Spike that we'll never know is if his real parents are dead or alive. One thing that I wondered about in the second movie is when a male stegosaurs was standing next to Ducky's mother when they were wondering about how Chomper's parents got into the valley that said "It's a mystery" I thought this male Stegosaurus was Spike's father who came to The Great Valley late and had a crush on Ducky's mother. But due to the fact that he was not seen after this and due to the fact a female Stegosaurus was seen and heard in the third movie I knew this wasn't true. Too bad' that would have been great!
Spike would've imprinted on Ducky. He probably did believe she was his mother at first. He eventually figured out that Ducky's mom was the mom and Ducky the "bit" sister, but they still have the strongest bond out of all the characters and the main reason he goes on adventure with his friends despite not enjoying it is because he's very protective of his friends, especially Ducky. He doesn't just follow them, he chooses to stick with them.
Spike can’t talk due to him being a baby Stegosaurus, unless he says his first words, in Journey Through the Mists, he says his first word, saying, "D… D… DUCKY!!!!!"
Just started revisiting this series, and can't help but wonder. Does Spike have a dinosaur version of autism? He develops at a different rate, observes the world around him in his own way, is generally mellow and non-expressive, and prefers not to talk. Even among others of his species, he's noticeably different. I know I might be reading too much into it, just thought it was a fun thing to think about.
Thanks for your comment, interesting thoughts! :) Spike is how I think humanized dinosaur personalities should be. That's why I like this character so much. But of course no one would watch it if every dino was more like him.
I think the best way to look at Spike that way is watching "Through the Eyes of a Spiketail", in which we see from his point of view why he's like this for the majority of the series, and defines his character, in the words of Don Bluth, that he's "a pure soul, simple, accommodating, and eager to please".
Either that or some sort of disability. It’s kinda cool. I don’t think there are many kid movies that have a disabled character and another thing is he is accepted by others who include him when they play.
Really the only thing "disabled" about Spike is that he hears words differently. You can he that in "Through the Eyes of a Spiketail". Except for names and the occasional words, he hears words as grunts, snares, growls, etc. He understands everybody perfectly, but he's very much aware that they don't understand his "words." All the noises Spike makes is him "talking."

Actually, he's not that dumb. He's very aware and observe and is just as intelligent as they others. Even before you see "Through the eyes of a Spiketail", spike shows many times that he's got his own mind and makes his own decisions, especially when his friends can't decide what to do. They as Spike what he thinks and he shows them through his body languages and actions, because they know Spike will make the right decision.
