In this video, we take a look at the Flysimware Learjet 35A, within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
We will be taking the aircraft from Toronto's Billy Bishop airport (CYZT), over to Chicago's legendary Meigs Field (KCGX). The aircraft is still in an "early access" state so, let's see whether or not it's worth taking the plunge. . .
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

Re. modelling circuit breakers... I just bought the A2A Comanche after watching your review. After taking off on my 4th flight I couldn't get the gear to come up. After many stressful minutes I realised the circuit breaker was up. After reseting it the gear was fine. I'm not sure that's a good thing or not as it was rather stressful - but it's a thing that it happened. Gotta love that aircraft!

Please refer to any manuals pertaining to that very airframe! o.O sometime even i forget to raise my gear after takeoff though. and that certainly does nothing to help you, i know but heh.. BUT yes read ANY relevant data if in the aircraft folder inside the aircraft folder within your community, or even data that devs provide to you outside if that too. good luck! (Be advised, I also have the A2A Commanche )

@@robinhood1577 thank you, I am enjoying reading through al the info on it, and watching the youtube vids. I think it's a great level of complexity - not as much as airliners, but a good amount to dig into. Much more immersive than the other aircraft I have in the sim. Really enjoying it :)

I've noticed that it's fairly easy to accidentally manually pop a breaker in the A2A Comanche when operating the switches on the bottom of the panel. The clickspots are fairly close and from the normal view the breakers aren't really visible. After two failures like that I now diligently check my breakers after operating any of the bottom switches with my mouse.

Same Steph; I’m always a bit sceptical with “early access” but, in the case of Flysimware, given their dedication to the C414, I’m fairly sure the Learjet will be completed to a high standard also : ) Cheers, all the best!

When the Learjet 35 was launched in 1973, it was one of the fastest medium-haul aircraft of its time. By 2020, more Learjet 35s had been sold than any other Learjet aircraft, and many of them are still in service after 50 years. The aircraft is powered by two Garrett TFE731-2 turbofan engines. Its cabin can accommodate six to eight passengers. The longer-range Model 36 has a shortened passenger section to create more space at the rear of the fuselage for the fuel tanks. I highly recommend testing the Flysimware Learjet 35A. I knew it would be good because the Flysimware Cessna 414A was great. But I didn't expect it to be this outstanding. Maybe the best jet of this size in MSFS 2020. Once again, a great review from iTB.

Same here. Very fond memories of Meigs, the Lear 35 and the GoodYear blimp over Soldier Field🙂 Did countless closed circuit traffic patterns there. I was a teen in the 80's when I got my first computer primarily for flight sims (Solo Flight, SubLogic FS, etc). Went on to get my PPL a decade later and it all started from this hobby. Really love their 414 in VR, now I have to get this L35A 😀 👍🏾

I'm really surprised that the Learjet was not included in the Anniversary Edition of the sim. This is indeed one of the quintessential planes of the MSFS. For me this is really THE business jet. Really beautiful, I really love Flysimware's interpretation of it. But I won't go for it tho... Looks like it needs too much effort to operate. At least it was much simpler in the FS4 or FS5. :D Anyway, your review was top notch again, enjoyed every moment. And yes. Meigs Field was obvious already from the title. :D

I think its actually really easy to operate. Pretty much got everything dialed in and feel like I am doing a good job by the fourth flight. Bindings are a bit of an issue (altitude and the pitch stuff doesn't keybind properly without a third-party addon) but not a big deal now. Will just get better with age.

True, Péter although, perhaps there was some sort of licensing issue with Learjet (maybe they didn’t want another of their aircraft, getting mishandled by a whole new generation of simmers XD ). I agree; initially I was a touch disappointed, that it wasn’t a Lear 45 but actually, I prefer the steam gauges on the 35 and those tip tanks do look pretty great. Thanks very much as always! I like how the sound is that characteristic fan whine of the Learjet. It is nice to have this iconic jet back in FS. I think the devs of FS just need to understand, the aircraft that are part of FS's history as default, need to remain. :P Then again, it did prompt third party devs to make these well done add ons. Hopefully the devs of this are watching this review and taking notes cause this product has a lot of hope. Ah Meigs. Many a Flight Sim, and likely many a flying career has started at that virtual field. My first successful flight sim landing was on a flight from Meigs to Champaign Urbana, in the Cessna 182 No exterior view...on Flight Simulator II on a Tandy 1000EX computer (second hand) :P. Amazing what the sim has evolved to.

Indeed Pythos; it’s probably just nostalgia speaking haha but, I do prefer the “classic” MSFS aircraft selection (there was a little bit of something for everyone). Still, I suppose we’re spoilt for choice these days! I guess, licensing issues play a part and perhaps, Learjet didn’t want another generation of simmers / pilots, screwing around with their airframes XD Simming has indeed come a very long way! Even back in the days of FS95 though, I was convinced that the experience truly was; “as real as it gets” ; ) Happy flying and all the best!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Yep! As a teenager, flying around Meigs and the Goodyear blimp on my C-64, exploring Chicago and surrounding area convinced me to get my PPL as soon as I could afford to (over a decade later). Cool video. I have about 3000 hours in the 35, and it's nice to see a nice model of it. Also, you are flying it like an airliner. Typically the flaps are retracted at 400 feet and you should be climbing out at 2oo until you are clear of the terminal area, then you climb out at 250 to .78 in the transition. If you want to learn how to fly this jet, do not use AP below 10,000 feet.

Excellent - entertaining review. My guess was Meigs - but suspected runway was too short to be sure... When documentation/manual is released, this is an instant buy. No doubt it will updated as the 414 was, until perfection. Now my analog hot rod GA is TBM850. Great to see different EGT margins on engines.. You normally stagger by replacing an engine with more hours. Running both engines down to due for overhaul at same time, ends up with both engines change at same time, with two engines on overhaul, in addition a testflight is required when both engines changed.. To avoid testflight, you replace only one engine.

Thanks very much, Øystein! As you say, if the C414 is anything to go by, I’m sure the Learjet will be finished to a very high standard. Thanks once again for watching! All the best : )

Superb video. You do a great service for the hobby. It was not clear to me how you were controlling pitch during the descent. All I saw on the scoreboard was ALT SEL armed. There didn't appear to be a vertical mode like IAS or VS active and I didn't see anything that looked like a pitch wheel or vertical speed controller. Could you clarify? Regarding the ALT hold button, I've noticed several aircraft in the sim where this button cannot be directly deselected and the only way to turn it off is to select another vertical mode, like VS. Maybe this is a peculiarity of the sim itself and not the add-on. Or maybe it's realistic.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
Thanks very much for the kind words, Jay! For the pitch mode, my preference is to deselect any AP vertical modes (except for ALT SEL) and then use the pitch / roll control on the yoke. You can simply click the control hat switch but, I found it preferable to assign some hardware buttons (I believe the keybind is; “Set Autopilot Pitch Reference” - or something to that effect). Overall, the above method gives you much better control over the aircraft, in both climb and descent. I have encountered similar ALT HOLD behaviours on other aircraft, yes. I’m fairly sure it must be a bug - I can’t imagine the mode would be “locked” in. . . I hope that helps? All the best : )

Hi Peter, I don’t know whether you own the FSW C414 also? I gather the systems depth of the Lear 35, will basically be on a par with that (ie decent, but no failures, or wear and tear modelled, etc). I do wish that FSW would change their stance on this, as for me (and I’m sure many others), it does detract from my enjoyment of the product somewhat. That being said, the Learjet is still a lot of fun, overall. I’m expecting that FSW will finish the Learjet 35 to a high standard, given their work on the Chancellor. Cheers, all the best! : )

I have one question about the vertical profile of this wonderful bird: there is a large knob on the yoke marked with NOSE DOWN, and also a switch on the central pedestal for Trim Up/Trim Down. Since either of them cannot be redundant:) when do you use each one? I confess that on descent I have used the one on the yoke (with the mouse) and I haven't touched the trim switch on the pedestal (with the mouse). I don't know which one of them responds to the Trim controls on my joystick. Cheers from Sydney Australia; your subscriber Nick.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
You’re most welcome, Nick! My understanding, is that the trim hat on the yoke, is the primary means of trimming and the trim switch on the centre pedestal, is a backup (for which, the trim mode has to be set through to the secondary position - it’s actually one of the checks during the startup). I think both switches will respond to your hardware control inputs but, in reality, the pilot would be using the yoke controls 99% of the time. It’s a little tricky to fully understand the system, without a product manual but, that’s the conclusion I came to anyway. . . I hope that helps a little. Cheers and all the best! : )

It’s certainly possible, Karamich. Perhaps also, FSW base their flight models around a decent yoke; I use a joystick myself which, I guess, is going to give an inherently more “pitchy” response from the aircraft. Cheers all the best!

Hi TB, LNAV worked just fine for me. I haven’t tried an ILS I’m afraid. I’m pretty sure TOGA works to give you the correct pitch command on the FD and yeah, I probably should have used that during the takeoff haha (though in the sim, for anything less than a 737 etc, I don’t tend to focus on the FD’s all that much, if I’m honest). Hi Skytime, I believe that the “VS” autopilot mode, simply holds the aircraft’s current VS (at the moment the button is pushed). What I prefer to do instead, is deselect any AP vertical modes (except for ALT SEL) and then use the pitch / roll control on the yoke. You can simply click the control hat switch but, I found it preferable to assign some hardware buttons (I believe the keybind is; “Set Autopilot Pitch Reference” - or something to that effect). Overall, the above method gives you much better control over the aircraft, in both climb and descent. I hope that helps? All the best : )

Is there a reason you didn't deploy the spoilers when landing?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
Indeed, Rob. 2 reasons actually: 1) I wondered whether the spoilers were actually intended for ground use (that little toggle switch, would be far from ideal to operate in the middle of a landing). 2) (and much more importantly) my HOTAS is a bit kaput currently and doesn’t always recognise my inputs on certain buttons haha (I think I know what the issue is and I’m currently debating what to do about it) XD I’d be interested to know, whether spoiler deployment during the landing is normal on the Lear 35. @@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for the reply. I found a flight manual for the 35A/36A and on page 2-35 "LANDING 1. I agree that the little switch is a lot more fiddly compared to an airliner, especially when a lot happens quickly after touchdown and it isn't possible to arm it. Hope this helps. What is the difference between the tds and pms 750?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
Hi Salsa, The two units are actually quite different and rather opposite in their strengths and weaknesses. Essentially, the TDS version is the more realistic of the two, providing real-world mapping, free US charts, coding etc (it actually uses the real-world Garmin software behind the scenes); as a result, it feels more realistic to operate, but it does have its limitations in the sim (no Navigraph integration for example). The PMS unit somewhat lacks the same realism factor - essentially making use of the sims default coding, mapping etc however, it offers more functionality (Navigraph integration being the main one). Which unit is "better", would really depend on what type of flying the unit will be used for and in which geographical location it will be used. If I could only choose one option though, I would definitely go with the TDS unit personally. I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

Hi GL, I assume “Air Ignition”, is like Continuous ignition on the 737, or IGN / START on the A320; essentially, powering the igniters continuously, to prevent a flameout at crucial stages of the flight. The Learjet by Flysimware is a lovely modeled aircraft. It's a shame that MSFS has pretty static and unrealistic flight physics. It feels like flying on tracks of a rollercoaster. In addition the sound design isn't convicing as well. Since these are the two fundamentals of a decent simulated aircraft i am fairly disappointed. But that's the same case as most aircraft for MSFS.

Hi Jan, Being in early-access, I’m sure we’ll see a lot continue to change / improve with the Learjet. I’m pretty sure, that FSW have said that the sounds and internal textures will be overhauled. Not sure where I stand on this one as ‘early access’ to me always smacks of ‘cannot afford to finish it’. Yes, cynical I know. It’s the sounds which do it for me I think. I don’t actually think the external sounds are that good unless they’ve already been improved from the very first release, have they? Reviews I saw showed the engines ‘phasing’ and not sounding that good at all. Oh the other hand, perhaps I should just support the developer, pay for the download and get on board?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
I’m not sure that’s being cynical, Mark and indeed, you may actually be correct haha. Personally, I take no issue with smaller devs releasing in early access, if it’s the only way they can get things done. So long as the product is ultimately finished to a high standard (and the FSW C414 certainly was), then I don’t see any harm. I do of course take issue, when the product never gets completed etc (and it’s also annoying when a nice discount isn’t offered in early access - the transaction should be mutually beneficial). The aircraft sounds definitely still need a lot of work but, again, going off the C414, I have a decent amount of faith in FSW (hopefully they don’t let me down haha). Of course, whether one chooses to support such a project, is very much up to the individual. I’ve ended up with many a dud over the years haha. I will say though, that I am already very much enjoying the Lear 35 in its current state. Cheers : )
