I believe, those are dried peas, in half. Looks like chick peas to me. Peanuts would probably be too greasy to really stick with the glue, and they'd rot over time, unlike dried peas. However, it is a great idea to use something like this indeed! Making something beautiful out of stuff you just have at home. That's so creative. :-)
