*sunflower oil (has more linoleic than oleoic) *grapeseed oil *coconut oil (not very occlusive, but good as a makeup remover - not very good on its own) *safflower seed oil - skin barrier repair *argan oil *avocado oil *borage oil *jojoba oil *sweet almond oil *rosehip oil - high lionelic acid *shea butter - good to be included in moisturizer //plants oils are not pure substances //cold press is better //natural oils aren't always better //some skin conditions can be worsened with application of oils //she uses oils to remove makeup thank you so much for this! so many other channels influence us to buy all these oils with the promise that it can help our skin conditions and we can get better skin. When you mentioned that olive oil actually worsens the skin barrier, it reminded me of a time when an esthetician advised me to buy a facial oil that had mostly olive oil, to fix my breakout. It cost $80, so thankfully I was too broke to make that mistake. Lol. Sigh.

@@Siegn_Lukas my understanding is that oleic oils are very rich, and feel nice and moisturising, but don't necessarily do much healing. and then there are linoleic and linolenic and it all gets too complicated for me! i've had eczema all my life, and gamma linoleic acids (i think) are particularly reparative for that, but i don't know why.

True. As a researcher myself. (Literally, I had tried a lot of oils) I concur with you. I don't think people when using products take into consideration the aging process. When we are young and healthy anything will do wonders. We don't even understand that is our body working with what we add to it. Sometimes the body will react negatively sometimes it won't. And bam! It only take one person with a positive comment about something for a person who had lost all hopes to try the product. Guilty! Now that I'm in my forties all I want is a quick result. One product wonder. Not to mention our lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol, lack of sleep etc. Detrimental to our skin.

Dr. Dray, thank you so much for breaking down all the skincare hype. I'm 52 and anytime I walk into a Sephora or Ulta I'm bombarded with skincare products and advice from the SA's. It's so overwhelming. It makes me very happy to know that I don't need a million steps in my skincare routine. I have extremely sensitive skin thanks to rosacea and a mild case of perioral dermatitis so many of these products sold in stores really irritate my skin even when they are touted for "sensitive skin". So far, Cereve has been the most non-irritating products I have found. I do enjoy mixing oils in with my moisturizer so it is very helpful to know the difference between what's good and what can harm.

63 year old black male with chronic dry skin. Aquaphor has worked well in the past but it’s too greasy. I like Nivea’s intense healing lotion and many other premium lotions, but none of them last more than 4 or 5 hours. I recently started using jojoba oil and have seen a vast improvement in my skin. It seems to have brought back the natural elasticity to my skin. And though it gives my skin a bit of a sheen, my skin does not feel oily or greasy like when I use aquaphor. I tend to use the jojoba oil with a quality lotion and it really has transformed my skin

Hi doctor. What's your take on: Macadamia nut oil Hemp seed oil Castor oil
@KristenKras

I personally love hemp seed oil. Castor oil is too thick for me. Macadamia is said to have similar properties to our natural sebum so that is meant to be good. Not a doctor here but have my own thoughts on these. Alas, castor oil is the cheapest of these and not my favourite.

Happy Valentines Day Dr. Dray. I appreciate you so much. I started using oils early in 2017. I was looking for the moisturizing effects everyone was talking about. I would apply it at night feeling like I had really done something good for my skin. When I would cleanse my skin in the morning I would find my skin just as dry as it was the night before. I would think it was just me. you have really opened my eyes to the fact that they are not penetrating my skin at all. You are saving me so much money. Thank You.

The only oil that's ever really done anything for me was grapeseed oil. When I was pregnant with my son about 6 years ago, I developed pretty bad eczema on the tops of my thighs. Never had eczema before so I had to research what I even had. I tried about 6 different creams including my favorite cerave cream. The only thing that worked was just straight grapeseed oil. I used it twice a day and by day three it was gone! I used it every night while I was pregnant just to make sure it didn't flare up again and I've never had an issue with it again.

Can’t thank you enough for this information! I’m a little confused now though. After watching this I was prompted to conduct some research into what components are actually necessary to moisturize the skin. I found that a moisturizer needs to contain a humectant, occlusive agent, and an emollient/s. Some sites indicated that certain oils CAN form an occlusive barrier, but in this video you mentioned that plant oils on their own can not form that occlusive barrier. Now maybe that’s because what you’re saying is that oils on their OWN, outside of a moisturizer, are not occlusive but inside a moisturizer they can be?

I use high GLA’s on wet skin after a shower. It really seals in the moisture and builds the collagen... I don’t even dry off first... I just push the extra water off as I rub on the oils, which I mix myself... I just recently added Argan oil to the mix and it seems to make the oils soak in even faster than the jojoba oil does alone... After that soaks in and I’m dry, I spread on some body butter made with the same oils whipped with shea butter and cocoa butter... that creates a barrier that keeps my skin moist... My oil mixture is equal parts jojoba, avocado, almond, apricot kernel and kukui nut oils (and now argan) plus rosehip seed, carrot seed, evening primrose, borage and vitamin E oils in equal parts...

This video deserves more views. Very good overview - lots that I knew, and even more things I didn't know. I wouldn't knock using pure oils - it is something of a personality thing I believe. I didn't care two figs about skincare in general (maybe dab a little diluted Tea Tree oil on an inflamed spot if it was painful), creams and lotions and moisturisers, bleh! Just a chore, very seldom a nice feeling at all. And exceedingly rarely any visibly positive results. But one ages... And when I was stocking up on my Tea Tree oil I picked up a bottle of Argan oil. And wow! It feels nice on the skin! I actually want to apply it! My face feels nice when I wake up. And my prickly forearms are finally almost smooth and even (as long as I remember to give them a few drops of oil now and then). Got my husband to use it on his very very dry old hands - ridiculous results within 2 days. So the Argan oil got me a bit interested in cosmetics in general - maybe these things aren't so bad and stupid after all. Branched out into pure Shea butter (elbows and feet and lips), and eventually actual cosmetic creams - nothing fancy, just something that feels nice and has _some_ SPF. But when I'm lazy I just reach for my Argan oil and smear a few drops on my face and wherever (pro tip: avoid pumps and go for droppers, a pump delivers way too much). The last point about oils probably being better as ingredients than straight up is well taken, but for some of us oils just suit our personalities better.

“Any oil is hydrophobic, including the oils that your face produces, which means that they’ll keep water from escaping. And that in turn keeps your skin hydrated. “Hydration is really a function of water balance, so oils help hold water in and prevent the environment from stripping water out,” Tyler Hollmig, M.D., director of Laser and Aesthetic Dermatology at Stanford Health Care, tells SELF.”

320Kad she loves Shea butter but thinks that would clog pores ... I don’t believe that cause ALOT of acne prone skins use it and swear by it. She also doesn’t mention that companies pay scientist to check their oils especially high end brands that make them. Some oils actually have natural spf in it and the bottles are colored or darkened to prevent spoiling. Oils also have a expiration date on them most last 2+ years.

Tamanu doesn't have an incredibly high linoleic acid content. and is a bit sticky and thick-ish. Not ideal for acne prone folk - at least not applied all over the face. I've experimented a bit with this....even Liah Yoo suggests to only use Tamanu as a spot treatment. (for acne, dark spot, etc) Hope that helps.

I usually break out with oils, but didn’t realize it could be due to my fragrance allergy. The oil I see most on You Tube is cacay oil, it has more antioxidants than rose hip seed oil, and is said to be a natural Retin A. But I couldn’t find any studies on anti-aging, other than a small study by the company selling it. Plus, I wondered if the reduction of wrinkles shown in the study could be similar to a good moisturizer. I would like to try it on my neck, but not sure I want to deal with a product that degrades easily. As always, thanks for the detailed information!

Hi🙋‍♀️ Dr. Dray!😊 You are unquestionably my superhero!!!🤩🏆 no doubt about it!🙂 This is such an interesting topic. I have a hate💔🤦🤷 love💕 relationship with oils lol As much as I want to like them all, I know that I must treat with caution e.g essential oils are more likely to be irritating on the skin and possible to cause allergic reaction even, so I avoid those.....even though I enjoy using essential oils as a mood enhancer in my aromatherapy. Essential oils have been around for centuries, used by many cultures for illness, healing (like you mentioned) and religious purposes, they have most certainly come a long way and re-introduced to us in this modern time & age which I find fascinating. Many brands are bringing out all kinds of oils which can be mind-boggling to many, some oils look appealing, I would say however, use according to common sense. I have to admit I have been using cold pressed 100% Jojoba oil and Rosehip seed oil on my body (these are the only oils I apply on my skin & sometimes on my face🙄😏) I have been applying them for years now and love the results I get. I put 2-3 drops in my moisturiser and my dry skin feels softer, looks healthier & brighter plus there isn't any need to re-moisturise again during the day (which is fantastic) because my skin can be as dry as an alligator's lol BUT I do have it all under control now!!😇 Thank you Dr. Dray for being such a brilliant educator👩‍🏫 you are a shinning star🎇 and as always keep smiling🙂and take care!! Hi Maria. I do the same for my face and body, but on my face I layer a few things and the results are blowing my mind! Water, a few drops of hyaluronic acid, a bit more water tapped on, cerave lotion, then an occlusive like Eucerin. I think I may start skipping the Eucerin or use it every other day, because my skin is completely hydrated now and the occlusive I don’t think is no longer necessary. I’m over 45, in a very dry winter climate, and my skin has never felt better! After one night of the new steps, my face was like a babies butt in the shower the next morning. I truly was amazed. I use to pile on expensive products, oils, etc and none of them resulted in the kind of improvement I have now. And I owe it all to Dr. Dray ❤️👍🏻

I've used plant oils, coconut, olive, grapeseed, and rose hip primary on my skin for years. But after a bad but of wind burn from a particularly cold blustery winter storm in NYS, I found that it wasn't helping. It felt almost irritating to my damaged skin. I switched to using cerave cleaner and facial lotions with excellent results. Now I use my stock of oils for removing makeup and on my hair ends. I find that double cleansing to remove my heavy makeup and heavier sunscreen works best. My skin feels soft and not stripped, and all traces of goop are off my face. And I don't break out. When I do get a pimple, it doesn't last as long on the face or skin this way. I had such good results from using oils as a first step in cleaning my face, that I started using this method on my body. Why not? I wear sunscreen everywhere, especially in summer. And it's helped to get rid of my body acne. I think it's because sunscreen is hard to wash off without stripping skin. Oils break up the sunscreen without scrubbing. Then the body wash has to clean off the oil before it reaches your skin, so it can't strip the skin of natural skin oils as much. I prefer olive oil on my face, coconut for lips and lips sticks that stain, and grapseed, which isn't as oily, on my body. Don't want to fall in the shower. My skin doesn't have any body acne, no severe winter dryness, no dry or oily patches. It feels like my skin is better able to absorb moisturizers and serums. I never feel tight skinned anymore. I realized this about 6 weeks ago. To have you verify this with this vlog means alot. I also use oil in facial masks. Honey and oil, the oil I use depends on the season and the dryness of my skin. 20 minutes on, then wash off. Not rinse. I use my cerave cleanser. I use my rosehip oil alot for this. All in all, changing how I use oil, from a leave on treatment or moisturizer to a cleansing agent has worked wonders.

Hi Dr Dray! Love your videos 💘 If you use oil in order to wash off makeup, the time oil spends on your skin is seconds. How do you think, maybe this is not enough for molecules in oil to do their job in scavenging free radicals, penetrating between skin cells, help restore skin barrier, etc? From chemical perspective, all these processes are not fast reactions that can happen within seconds. So maybe using pure oil is useless if you can't leave it on the skin? Please like this question so Dr Dray can see it 🙏

Andrea, TY for this! I almost bought rose hip oil from Trader Joe's. I think I'll pass cause of fragrance factor. I've been using grapeseed oil once a week for facial massage. I press a warm damp towel over my face and neck, apply a dime-size amount of oil, massage it in, , and wipe off excess oil with a warm damp towel. It seems to deep clean my pores. Stubborn whiteheads soften. After a couple of days, a gentle washcloth cleansing exfoliates them away. I don't think of grapeseed oil as moisturizer. I use it as massage oil. I chose it because I had it in my pantry and it is supposed to be one if the least comedogenic oils. I have old acne scars and enlarged pores that clog easily.

Carolina Prexl it's called PRP platelet rich plasma. It can be injected into various areas of the face similar to the way fillers are for example under the eyes. But it can also be applied topically alone or in conjunction with some sort of microneedling which creates open channels for the PRP to better penetrate to the area where collagen is stimulated by this process. Additionally it can be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth at the follicle. It's relatively new in Dermatology but also has been used orthopedics and pain management to help heal chronic injuries to tendons and the like. It seems possibilities are limitless but it is still new so the research studies are ongoing. Insurance does not pay for any of these treatments it is all self pay and can be pretty expensive. A PRP video would be cool Dr. Drey!

barbarac102 High GLA oils are the ones that Dr Dray described as being high in linoleic acids.. these have high Gamma Linoleic Acids, which are even better fatty acids... these are rosehip oil, borage oil, carrot seed oil, etc... jojoba oil, avocado oil, almond oil and other oils high in regular linoleic acids are often used as carrier oils for the GLA’s, helping to transport them deeper into the skin... most of these oils have vitamin E and some have vitamin C, as well... I have been using these oils for 30+ years and I am now over 60 and have NO wrinkles. I have a bit of sagging because I haven’t been using retinoids but I don’t have a single wrinkle anywhere... so they absolutely do work. I have used them successfully, despite having rosacea, and have never had an issue. I have just started using Differin to combat some skin thickening on my nose, tho ( a complication of rosacea), so we’ll see how that goes... I am also contemplating trying out freshly home made vitamin C serum to combat the sagging... We’ll see what effect that has...
