I’m a current Excelsior student. I transferred in the maximum 113 credits. I used military JST/ACE credits, A ton of Sophia credits, 21 upper level credits, Google Project Management Certificate credits through Coursera and some community college credits. My total cost for Excelsior will be around $3800 for the 7 credits at EU. I chose EU over UMPI because I was able to have 113 credits and their enrollment set up was much more user friendly than UMPI. I’m still considering UMPI for their MAOL degree.

Hi, I’m thinking of doing the same thing. Whats your major? Would it be possible to contact you through email? Would appreciate it.
@CollegeHacked
@CollegeHacked Год назад
I'll admit. I think I'm a little salty against EU because of how much better they used to be, so I admit there's a little bias in my review of them, but I will say that for most students pulling credits from so many places might be difficult or even impossible. But for folks with a lot of upper level transfer credits (or the desire to go hunt said credits down), it can be the #1 choice.

I don’t know if this was included in the analysis but how the college is viewed in industry should be a factor. Some people want to hack because they might already have experience in that field and just want the degree. However some people are starting from no experience and are making career changes so how a degree is viewed from an employer is important.

Dr. Stumme, I would love for you to do a Video on the Best Colleges/Universities for Military and Veteran Students. It is very sad that AMU/APUS (For Profit) is the top provider to Military Personnel for higher education. This is upsetting to me since I know they are not a very good school and they are getting tons of military Tuition Assistance and GI Bill money from our Military and Veterans. I have come across fellow veterans like myself that did not know about using their Joint Service Transcripts (JST) or to even check to see if they have credits from Air University/Community College of the Air Force and or Community College of the Navy. Some colleges are very liberal about accepting military experiential credits and some are not. It would be nice if you could help steer our Military and Veterans to good schools that will give the maximum credits and provide the best education possible. Thank you for all that you do. I enjoy your channel. Just one more class until I graduate from Excelsior next semester. Jim W.

@TheLifeofKam99

I’m currently active duty. I went to UMGC and earned a BS Business Administration in 2 years. I think UMGC is the best undergraduate option for active duty military members since they are regionally accredited, not for profit, apart of a state university system so their legitimacy will never be called into question, and you won’t have to pay out of pocket using TA. They also accept Sophia, Clep exams, and Dante’s exams, and JST transfer credit. I think someone can college hack and earn an undergraduate degree from UMGC in as little as 12 months.

@ipodtouch470
@ipodtouch470 Год назад
I was exploring this and even though a lot of the online universities are accredited the programs are not accredited. For example WGU is accredited as a whole but not all their programs are. For example the software engineering and computer science programs at WGU are not abet accredited. Abet accreditation is basically the accreditation that looks at university STEM programs. It basically says this program meet these minimum requirements. So if a company care where you got your degree from you can bet they will be hoping your degree program is ABET accredited. I know for sure ASU is abet accredited and probably any online college that is an extension from a traditional state university.
@katydid5088
@katydid5088 Год назад
@@ipodtouch470 I would just say experience is king. If the course layout doesn't teach usable skills (ABET accreditation is more likely to but it's not a guarantee) then where you went to college doesn't matter unless you want to get into research in a doctor or master's program. When you consider the number of non-college graduates or the ones from middling universities that still do well but don't have the name draw of places like Stanford, it mostly boils down to studying well and picking the best middling college you can afford while balancing real life soft skills and learning.

From a senior citizen's point of view, Excelsior University is unworkable even though I have an associate's degree from an earlier iteration of the college in 1988. Now they make you take a cornerstone course which is mind-numbing in its format and later a capstone course which I assume is at the same level of stupidity. I have withdrawn and am planning to enroll at my state's land grant university, Kansas State University. The entire tone of the college has changed since it was privatized.

I would say try the community college in your area and see if they have an extension to a state university. A friend got her B.A through a Community College with a satellite campus and then went out for field work,degree credit, and eventually and internship to job via the local state school. Paying for it was also a breeze as she was a state resident and first time college goer. (They didn't have limits on age for scholarships funds, only that you HAD to come in for finance management, tutoring, and advisory sessions prior to completing the degree.) The CC goal was to create well paid college grads that would have good networking opportunities. (Their original program was geared toward adult learners, single parents, and or low income families. ) Their graduation rate for a Community College was 70 percent or something crazy like that with 100% job placement/paid living wage internships. Sadly, I don't know if the program in that state still exists, only that biology lab/chemistry degrees often have extension courses via the local CC. Worthwhile and you might get more dispense from your financial aid attending an in state university and CC.

I'm not at the point in my employment where I'm eligible for that benefit, so I'm using Sophia before I get there. Curious your thoughts on multiple bachelor's degrees. My plan is to get a Capella or Strayer degree through my employer, then a WGU degree through my GI Bill. Probably a Master's through WGU as well since I'll have so much of my benefit left.

Something that if very important to consider for your Major like Psychology, Accounting and Social Work (examples)is to check if their programs are accredited by the organizations that oversee your program of choice. I was researching Fort Hays. Which bachelors did you complete? Were there any prerecorded lectures or was it mostly reading?
@tallestmountain
@tallestmountain 5 месяцев назад
@@geddon436I did a LOT of research before closing FHSU. First I needed some place affordable. They are that. I wanted a public school, definitely NOT a proprietary for profit school. I needed a place that would accept my older credits from various sources. I found them in the US NEWS and World Report under best schools in several categories. They stacked up very well against all the other schools I looked at. And their tuition was less expensive than in state tuition at any if the public colleges in my own state. I did the General Studies because I had lot of credits elsewhere and that degree accepted the most. I did two concentrations, geography (in which I already had an associates) and general business. There are several concentrations to choose from. They did not have an online degree in geography when I started or I would have taken that path. I was already heavily invested in general studies by the time they got the geography degree online. As for the type of classes, it varied. For some there were readings and videos. One class was completely self-paced with videos and readings, you just had to pace yourself and have it all done by finals week. Professor Pruden taught Management. She actually did some live sessions where you could interact with her. These were recorded for those that could not attend live. She is a great teacher. If you take a philosophy class try to get TJ Reilley. I had a lot of fun in her classes. So much so I took another one that I didn't really need, but wanted the experience. I also took some leadership courses. They were great. A lot of schools teach management but not many teach leadership. Your experience will vary from teacher to teacher, just like in any school. But if you are proactive and put in the effort, you will have a good experience. Many of the courses utilize discussion boards for class discussions. I actually prefer these to live classroom discussions, because everyone gets to participate, and you have time to organize your thoughts before you post. Having taken live classes and online classes elsewhere, I have to say, for the most part, I enjoyed my FHSU experience more. I felt like I was getting a quality education at a great price. And that is another thing, if Fort Hays can provide a quality education as one of the least expensive schools in the nation, why can't other schools do the same. If one of their certificate programs is an area you are interested in, go for that first to give them a try. If you like the school then you can apply those credits to your degree. If you go somewhere else later,, you can transfer the credits to that school. I am considering going back and getting their certificate in Applied Data Analytics.

Dr. Stumme, could you elaborate more on regional accreditation as opposed to institutional accreditation? I’m having a. Hard time trying to decide. I graduated from SNHU this year with my bachelor’s, however getting into their graduate program has had it challenges. Not on me because I graduated with honors but their falconry can be hard to work with in my experience and I’ve missed two deadline’s to start and now waiting to February 2024. So I am weighing my options now with strayer University instead but the accreditations between the two has my scratching my head . Can you shed some light on this?

There are better grad programs than Strayer, SNHU can definitely be hard to work with. What are you trying to earn, an MBA? Are you looking for a program with weekly deadlines to keep you engaged, or do you want a program that is competency based (no deadlines, work at your own pace)?

I'll admit. I think I'm a little salty against EU because of how much better they used to be, so I admit there's some bias in my review of them, so maybe without the bias filter they are a C. And if you somehow already possess a bunch of upper level credits that transfer in perfectly (or feel like searching for them), it might be the best fit for you. But for most students especially those starting from scratch, without the uExcel exams, going to Excelsior seems to be a downright headache.

I'm trying to compare liberty and wgu for their basic it degrees. Looks like liberty doesn't include certs as part of degree path... wgu does but we may or may not agree on certain certs if the goal is management so maybe doing them a la carte as necessary and taking the CAPM they do offer on the side? If i only hacked with Sophia (minus english writing classes) there were 12 classes. They all transferred for a total of 13/36 because i had college credits hanging out from 1994. If i do wgu I'm 35 ish% done and only have 2 math classes if i count finance for managers. and I'll need to research to see what i have from Sophia transfers and what else i can get there for LU and then map it out and decide which ones better? My husband is currently doing wgu for the Cloud degree 2nd hardest it degree. English composition class was very doable even for my dyslexic husband.
@CollegeHacked
@CollegeHacked 5 месяцев назад
Nice! 😄 You’re definitely on the right track. Whether WGU or LU is more hackable/cheaper mostly depends on the major and the hours you can give per week. LU is easier to balance life during, since the timing of the courses is already modulated for you (has to take 8 weeks no matter what, so not as much of a rush). WGU is by time so there’s usually that pressure of “if i’m not working on school, i’m wasting money.” But LU also doesn’t outsource almost any of their CSIS classes, if you check their equivalency charts 👎🏼
