My favorite courses? 1.- On EDX - Analytics Edge (Dimitris Bertsimas, et al - MIT). Mainly based on R. 2.- On Coursera - Machine Learning (Andrew Ng - Stanford). Based on Matlab/Octave. Both free. Top notch. Basic math, algebra and programming skills are required. College level.

Just finished the first course of the 5-course specialization Applied Data Science with Python on Coursera. I must say the quality surprised me and I'm looking forward to beginning the next course. As you say Coursera is a little bit more expensive than other platforms, but it is definitely worth it. Also tried the first two courses of the Data Science Specialization by Johns Hopkins, but I don't feel ready for R yet. Nontetheless, if you have some experience with R it might be one of the most complete options out there. Thank you for your reviews!

Your videos really need more TEXT OVERLAYS. When you're mentioning a whole bunch of names, list them on the side. Scrolling down, searching through the many links in the description for the name you just mentioned, rewatching the last ten seconds to recheck the name, scrolling down and searching again, ... Really, simple text overlays would help! I must add: your content is really high quality and I personally like your personality. ;)

This is my opinion based on with my experience. I think data science is not a technique or drawing some graphs, but a "science". What does it mean? It is full of mathematics like linear algebra, multivariate calculus. Learning programming language is important, but that's only a practical tool. I have met many people who do science jobs, but in fact they put lot of junk x variables without considering linearly dependent or independent. Many pepple do not know an idea of span, orthogonal, and eigen vectors ... sigh ... I hope youguys do not mislead.

I must say that I disagree about the Coursera course given by Johns Hopkins University. Maybe it was acceptable a few years back, but now it is getting really old (they sometimes teach you to use functions in libraries that are specifically mentioned in the documentation to be deprecated...). On top of that, it is absolutely not self-sufficient - I was able to do the first courses only because I have been programming for years but a lot of beginners are complaining about the difficulty since lectures are often totally unrelated to the assignments. The staff totally deserted the courses (some posts on forums have not had answers for several years now), and the peer-reviewed assignments are clearly done and marked by people who just give the highest mark to about anyone, while expecting you to also give the highest mark despite sloppy work. You can see from a lot of assignments that some (most?) people do not understand much, and probably just copy-paste code from the net to get a certificate. The only positive side is if you are looking for easily-accessible yet real datasets to work on. But I don't think it is worth paying. A good idea might be to not try to get certificates, use other courses / books to train yourself, and take the 7 free days to just get all datasets from all courses and do the projects by yourself.

I see a lot of online courses, some of which you've named in this video. Some of these say, "become a data scientist in 10 weeks" Why do they leave out that if you only take the course and dont have the correct background that you will be wasting your money. I am interested in becoming a data scientist but i truly doubt that after 10 weeks, i will be employable. The prereqs should mention something about this but none of the courses do. I dont think its helpful to lead people on about being employable. What do you think? Do you believe that after 10-15 weeks, someone would hire a fresh grad with no related background? I see another CCNA cert type thing here where everyone gets the cert and no one ever gets a position with just that cert. Let me be clear, I dont blame them for not hiring people with only a 10-15 week course, i get it. But alot of these courses say, no exp required, must have the willingness to learn and have a computer...

They're a good place to start, but you will need more on your CV. Maybe some projects that you have done off your own bat. It depends what you're aiming for. Top tier companies are going to be swamped with applications from people with PhDs from prestigious universities. Smaller companies less so. I'd try to get work experience somewhere whilst doing the course. Publish your projects on Github and keep applying. If you can find a mentor, that would be helpful too.

I love your channel but with all due respect, I am surprised you are giving such a high rating to Coursera and such a low rating to Udemy. Having used both, I much prefer Udemy for the simple reason that I can directly correspond with the author/instructor and many of them are very responsive. With Coursera, you can only have your work “peer reviewed” - which is just the one eyed leading the blind. You will never hear back from the course creators. I consider that a very serious flaw. What do you have to say about that? Just curious

I had to downgrade my course for Udemy just to get it approved. At first I argued that their requirements was unacceptable for learning Networking in the Information Technology field. It was their way or the highway. So I gave them what they wanted, and then went back, after it was approve, and put the course back the way it belonged. Nobody will force me to downgrade my product for their "so-called" best methods for learning. And the course I get for myself from Udemy are poor quality and numerous ineffective instructors. Having that $20 course from Udemy was not even worth it if the price tag is free, for most of that I have purchased. I also stop creating courses on Udemy for that reason. Those who bought my course bought a course that taught them theoretical and practical lesson in order for them to start a career in that field with no experience. People use that course to get certified in that field and use it as a reference guide when need be. Udemy's approved course was only approved when I removed all the real content. They even had me change the title of my videos because using a title like "Network Basics" was unacceptable. So I have to create titles that did not explain the content of the video and those where the type of things I had to go back and revert after the approval. Udemy's approved course would have ruined my reputation as an instructor and no way was I going to allow people who really wanted to learn Networking use my course as a foundation for their false hopes of a skillset and hinder their chances of understanding the technology for them to start a career in that field. It is that serious and me changing over 60hrs of content by uploading all the videos with the full content and replacing all the names of the lesson, gives you an idea how serious i took it. The sad part was other instructor's courses outside of Udemy are different as night and day. Meaning that those instructors cared more about the money then they did the content. That is what Udemy promotes. My last course I got was from Cisco Learning Networking Store for $1,500 and the price tag shows that I am not afraid to pay for something that is worth it. And because of Udemy, i made a habit to pay the price for knowledge because the $1,500 is nothing when it comes to the knowledge I got off that course. Meaning it was worth every 1,500 dollar bill I laid down on Cisco's lap. Thank you so much for this video and I will be checking out Brilliant today and see what they are all about.

Hi ;-) what do you think about Pluralsight? I know that subscription is quite expensive but for me it covers a lot of great, high quality content shared by professional tutors. I have already watchedsome beginner and intermediate Python courses and these helped me a lot.

If we do projects by ourselves, how would we find help for debugging or have others check your work? I feel that's the disadvantage of not learning in a university environment.

Could you make a similar recommendation list for Reinforcement Learning. I signed up for Dataquest but there aren't any courses for RL.

Hi, my question is not about the courses itself, but how to ingress at the market? I am an electrical/electronic engineer, and I'm willing to do a master degree in data science, however, with no experience in this field, I cannot find a job to do it, unless I try it through a grad scheme, but since I am 30years old, with 2 kids, I'm not willing to take a hit of £10k pounds less in my salary

Hi! I know you've done an ou degree in physics, I'm about to embark on the maths and physics degree with a long term goal of making it in data science. Do you think physics would be the better option over maths and physics? They do a data science degree directly, but I'm not sure it would go deep enough on the maths side of things so I'd rather learn to code separately and have the maths and physical science side nailed down so to speak.
