I've had a lot of luck mixing electric blue acaras with other large cichlids including tiger oscars. The acaras have become my favorite fish from their temperment and colors!
My oscar absolutely annihilated my blue acara...one minute they were getting along I go to the store come back and my blue l99ked like he was put in a blender
My cousin had a large common pleco in with his Oscar the Oscar was being ornery and thought he was a tough guy tried picking on the pleco the pleco reared up hooked the Oscar with his side fin did a roll and slam the Oscar on the bottom of the tank never seen that Oscar mess with it again was pretty crazy to see.
Some great ideas for fish mates for Oscars I just love mine and there personalities. I’ve had fire mouth with mine which worked well and still currently got 3 sevrum in there But took the fire mouth out after I add Texas Cichlid. But all is working well.
Great vid , I have 2 convicts 2 jewels 2 fire mouths 2 Oscar’s and a 16 inch pleco in a 150 gallon. with weekly water changes and 2 canister filters pumping 600 gallons a hour combined and a lot of hiding places everyone gets along swimmingly (no pun intended )
Nothing is cooler than a clutch of baby Oscars. I always did well with them . They were my second progression in ornamental fish keeping between Dempsey’s & African Cichlids … my last experience before moving into marine / reef . But baby Oscars are still in my heart I see them coming back around again.
My Oscar has been super chill with tank mates. I have a 300 gal tank and with my Oscar's I have blue acaras, severums, clown loaches, pretty much every species of geophagus and my personal favorite Oscar tank mates..... Bichirs! 1 endlicheri and 1 ornate bichir!
You can also keep Senegal Bichirs with Oscar’s (given they both have the right temperaments). I’ve kept my bichir with my Oscar for over 5 years, and had no issues.
At the moment I'm keeping an oscar (about 7"-8"), and a chocolate cichlid about 5". Also 5 silver dollar fish and a pleco. So far so good with this this group of fish. I recently acquired a 210 gallon aquarium that will soon be there new home. Will probably add a few more silver dollars ,but that will be it
If you are like me stumbling on this video in 2024 for your future Oscar, remember, like this video stresses, you need large tankmates with an Oscar. But I want to add that you have to remember Oscars grow extremely fast. Most of these fishes listed and lots of other sutible tankmates, for commonly owned aquariums, dont grow anywhere near as fast as an Oscar so theyll be dinner in less than a year. Unless you are buying monster fishes who grow just as fast or faster and wont eat the Oscar, I would recommend buying your tankmates FIRST and growing them out OR buy them at an already large size (which will be more expensive). Great list, im doing research to find tankmate ideas that catch my eye and arent commonly known like a Pink Tail Chalceus.
My current tank has 1 oscar, 1 ghost knife fish, 2 convicts, and a pleco. I am getting a platinum parrotfish in a few days, and looking for a severum to add.
Thanks, Zenzo. This was very helpful. I have considered keeping an Oscar as I know my hubby would enjoy it. I'm always trying to keep fish he likes to watch, so it keeps the heat off of my MTS, that he must endure in our home 😁😆🤣
I have my tiger Oscar with a rainbow shark, angel fish, jack Dempsey, and African peacock, and they all get along just fine! Note they all grew up together in my 75 gallon tank so that might be why the aggression in my tank is low
I have an albino tiger oscar , about 2.5 ". And a Madagascar ciclid about 3.5". So far they're inseparable..we'll see what happens when the oscar starts getting some size too it.
I had a Madagascar ciclid that ended up being so aggressive. It was only 3-4" long. I had to sell it . He was really tearing my oscsr up .. So it just luck I guess if they get along .
This video is old now, but I’ve been away for a year spent a lot of time in hospital. Yeah I have four Oscars in my 260 gallon aquarium. I also have a giant clown loach and four smaller clown loach. I did have silver dollar but unfortunately whilst I was in hospital they got a disease and died one by one. Thinking of getting a JD and maybe green terror, but I want a real green terror, not a gold som. Good video. Nice to catch up. Thanks
I just bought an albino one, he is about an inch n a half (the size of a corydorra catfish) n so toot lol. Currently, my tank is 60 gallons n overstocked (but not really cuz none of the fish are full grown). I will move them to a 125 gallon in 2 weeks. I have 4 blood parrot, 3 severums, 1 oscar, n a pleco. I think i want one more severum lol i noticed the more severums i add, the less they chase each other lol when i release them into the 125, i know they will feel like they in the ocean lol note, im getting all the fish larger then the oscar, that wont eat it so it will b use to them when it outgrows them lol
I saw one of the most beautiful Oscars today after watching your video. I'm going to tank firing up now I couldn't walk out of the store with him but going back tomorrow. Wish I could send you a picture but don't know how
In the past I've had a lot of luck with Oscar's and Dempsey's together. Have not had any for a while but I am going to start another Oscar tank with the smallest ones I can get trying to figure out what other cichlid I may want to add. Also looking at the Red Hook silver dollars as tank mates
I have 1 African chilid in my tank 1 goldfish that has miraculously survived with my albino and red bar Oscars for 1 1|2 years …. I want to add a few more fish but my tank is only 60 gal looks like I’m maxed out 😮
👍😎 Good choices. I’ve had some of them over the years, always like Pitcus cats, My nets don’t though, but never an Oscar, never really liked them much. But maybe should try. Cool shirts Zenzo. ✌️↗️
Cali Kev Many of my friends didn't care for Oscar's either, until I acquired three of them at about 3 inches long. Now four of them have 7 Oscar's amongst them. They're very interactive fish and I used to hand feed them, even when they reached 12 inches. It was just a little trickier..Lol. Give Oscar's a chance and you won't regret it but good water quality is a must. I kept them with a Ghost knifefish, senegal bicher, clown loaches and a pair of jewel cichlids.....in a planted tank! No issues. ✌🏽
At the moment I Have two Oscars about 8 inches each, one tiger and one albino, in with pictus catfish, common pleco and a green severum. Wondering if I can put a group of silver dollars with them? I currently have a 125 gallon tank and I’m upgrading to a 180 soon? Please let me know.
I just got a 129 gallon aquarium it is 5ft x 2’ tall x 19” w, I’m setting it up for an Oscar I’m getting a buddy of mine the Oscar is 12+ inches, I already an a pleco in another tank that I will be moving to the 129 when it’s set up. What do you recommend that could comfortably be in that size tank with the 1 Oscar?
Great video at the perfect time. Getting ready to move my 2 oscars, 4 silver dollars and 1 pleco from a 75 to a 125. They all grew up together. I was thinking of adding a severum. What do you think? I have a jewel cichlid also. Thanks!!!
Firemouth should be okay if you have some caves, etc. With the Jack Dempsey, it’s hard to say. It could work…or it could be a battle zone with the two fish fighting.
Do angel fish bother oscars? Also I have noticed that my oscar is glass surfing. I have checked water and do a weekly change. She just never stops and I have read this is stress. I have 2 other oscars they are 2" and she is 3'. i have a place and 3 clown fish. My tank size is 55 gal. Can you help me out?
For the angelfish question In my situation.. the oscars were bullying my angelfish. They started off fine but once they formed a pair the angelfish stood no chance.
I have an Astronotus crassipinnis in a 200gal tank. I have only African tankmates due to its aggressive nature. Ctenopomas, polypterus, synodontis. I Can't have another fish in there because he will kill. Africans are strong enough.
Only if you plan on getting a much larger tank within the next 8-12 months. In my opinion, a 55 is barely large enough for one Oscar. For two, I’d choose something that’s 5-6’ in length (like a 5’ long 90, or a 6’ long 125).
Nothing is cooler than a clutch of baby Oscars. I always did well with them . They were my second progression in ornamental fish keeping between Dempsey’s & African Cichlids … my last experience before moving into marine / reef . But baby Oscars are still in my heart I see them coming back around again.
