When I had premature twins, it was a real eye-opener on how a good pacifier was a tool to help my preemies learn to associate sucking with satiation while they were being tube fed.
We tried ALL the pacifiers for our breastfed baby. Then finally tried mam thinking for sure she wouldn’t take to it, and lo and behold she latched right away and we never looked back. Just goes to show you listen to your baby. They will let you know what they like. Babies like what they like sometimes with no rhyme or reason.
I know you most likely won’t see this over the many many other comments. But I wanna say I’m a 17 year old girl who’s passion has been becoming a doula or labor and delivery nurse and you help me learn and love everything about birth. I think it’s so beautiful and I want to be a part of others journeys in this amazing strong experience. Thank you for being a reliable and good learning channel♥️♥️💕
With the passion that you obviously have you're going to be a huge help to everyone and help create great experiences and memories for many families! Keep following your dreams and it will help many other dreams come true! 🙏
I learnt this very late in life. Baby's first pacifier was like the 2nd one. I recently got tommee tippee closer to nature (it's some what breast like). IT WAS A GAME CHANGER FOR OUR FEEDING JOURNEY🎉
the Pacii pacifiers! I’m so curious what you think. I’m pregnant with my first and got these as a gift… I don’t know what to think of them because they’re SO different from all the other stuff on the market!
The fact of the matter is that you're gonna use whatever your baby decides s/he will take. My first baby wasn't picky, and would use them all. My second would only use the MAM ones, even down to one specific shape of the MAM binkies. My third isn't super particular (yet) about binkies, but she does refuse the round type binkies (like Avent) outright. By the way, they're were/are all breastfed. I've never experienced nipple confusion with any of them.
but aren't soothers like the second one more protective for dental development? I could see the first one being great as long as the lil teethies aren't there yet, but the switch over might be hard once they are. Would love to hear your take on this
Breastfed 3 babies and mam was the fav for all 3. Remember all babies are different. I had to use different diapers and wipes for all 3. Thanks for all the tips and love your content. Good luck mama's and you got this!
My Son wouldn't take ANYTHING other than a very carefully modified Playtex bottle nipple. Granted it was 1996 & incredibly difficult to find a natural pacifier to imitate breastfeeding, but the Platex bottles with disposable (😱) liners were AMAZING. We basically just very carefully melted the slit in the nipple closed on the inside so he wouldn't swallow air & he was as happy as a clam. Those bottles were fantastic, although I can't & don't want to imagine how many of those plastic, disposable bottle liners hit landfills over the decades. They sure did almost completely remove the air gulping for bottle feeders. I'd actually still recommend them if they still make them today bc the bottle nipples were everything our girl here tells you to look for. They did have round nipples too, but were oddly more cylindrical at the nipple end. They were the only nipple I could find that my Son would take and switch easily between breast and bottle while I was working. Every baby is different. Every mouth shape is different. Keep that in mind & you'll find the one right for your baby. But remember - some babies just won't take pacifiers & that's fine too!
We used the Nuk with my 2021 breast feed baby. I know it's probably not breast feeding friendly, but it didn't immediately fall out when he fell asleep which meant I got a bit more sleep.
This would make sense to me actually. They make it so that any baby can take it/drink from it easily because it’s compression based. But it’s not going to be the best option for encouraging a breast like latch IMo ❤
My son hated any that were shaped like the first ones you showed, but he loved the MAM ones. Still does, but he's older and only has them randomly. The main issue I found with the mam pacifier is the base is so thin it breaks or gets chewed so easily!
Those second ones you showed: my son chewed the end off with his little gums. If I hadn’t seen it in time, who knows what horrible thing could have happened. They come out of their base sometimes, too. I will never buy those again and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone either (not saying everyone’s baby will bite them in half, but I don’t think it’s a threat anyone would want to play with).
We absolutely love tommee tippie, all my kids have used them. It’s probably not going to be what’s recommended but as a mom who was bottle fed all 4 kids, I personally would argue the bottle/feeding time in general matters far more.
My kids were bottle fed, but their favorite pacifier was the vanilla one from the hospital. My first, I didn't know to get extras, but I loaded up with my second.😂
We like the Dr Brown's paci, super cheap at Target and have the wide base like you mentioned. It seems a bit big when you give it to your newborn but stick with it
Bottles and Pacifier are so crazy to me cause I swear every video I see about them are different. Everyone is saying different things . At the end of the day you use what the baby takes 😂
I was advised by the specialist the pacifiers that are literally flat at the base. I never had trouble with breastfeeding bc of it, and the hospitals where i live only recommend the flat based pacifiers. Its to help form the palate, teeth, and tongue placement and to help with mouth muscle development. Babies should be sleeping with a closed mouth, and pacifiers with a large base will cause an open mouth when they fall asleep. Its hard for babies to keep them in at first so they have newborn adapted pacifiers, but as their mouth muscles develop, they can handle a completely flat base at around 3 months. I breastfed my 4 babies past 18 months with no problem, and they all sleep with closed mouths except the one that didn't want any pacifier from birth. He is now in speech therapy to strengthen his mouth muscles.
This is interesting info. But a flat base won’t mimic a latch like at the breast. They won’t be able to latch deeply and keep their lips flanged out. Teeth and palate development is important but usually before 6 months of age the focus is on latch and breastfeeding and less on teeth
Ninni and co and pacii ! Please these are the widest based ones ive found so im very interested to see what you think as im due with my 2nd baby next month my 1st was EBF for 14 months and never took to a pacifier so im desperate to introduce a good one this time!
I agree with these tips, but also this: I will never give my little one a pacifier that is hard plastic, even if it meets other parameters to a T. I personally had gotten MAJOR bruising around my mouth when in the crawling stage due to the plastic being jammed into my face whenever I fell, even if I barely even hit the ground with my face.
But that’s not really a concern with a new baby. The thing to focus on early is their feeding muscles, palate and ability to continue to do well at the breast. 6 months plus is a totally different ball game ♥️
First baby wasn't really into pacifiers so we have a bunch left over for 2nd baby coming in Nov, plus we got a newer one called the Pacii? Looked interesting!!
My oldest LOVED the MAM pacifiers, and they were a lifesaver because the glow-in-the-dark ones meant we (baby included) could find them in the middle of the night. They kept me sane. Looking back, though, he was unable to breastfeed because of an oral tie (he completely refused to latch after three days). My breast after trying to nurse him looked similar to the MAM nipple, so he probably like them ~because~ of the oral tie. My second baby breastfed beautifully and refused any and all pacifiers, no matter shape or material. In the end, probably for the best, even though it’s been an exhausting two years. 😅
I tried literally so many types of pacifiers with my toddler when she was young, because I sucked my thumb for a long time as a kid and it messed my teeth up. The Mam Pacifiers were the only ones she would take. She did not like the other kinds at all, she would throw them and everything. What sucks is having to put the expense into finding one that works.
My second loved/loves the itzy ritzy pacis with the big bulb at the end. I think it was easy to keep in. But neither of my kids were great at nursing (for various reasons). Pregnant with my third and wondering if I should push a more “breastfeeding friendly” paci or if the itzy ritzy (or whatever) is what this baby likes just go with that?
When my baby still took a pacifier he loved the newborn mam ones the hospital gave me, all the other ones just seemed to big for him. At times I'm tempted to try to get him back on one bc even tho he sucks on his fingers he still uses me as a paci for comfort so it's hard for anyone else to get him to sleep
Haha I have a few scripts written two of which are bottle recommendations/paced bottle feeding and then the other is pacifier recommendations /how and when to introduce
The MAM binkies were/are the favorite amongst all my babies. But really, just put any binkies on your registry. People will get you whatever they think is best. They never stick with the brand/type you put on there. Which is fine. That's how you get variety.
It’s so funny how babies just like what they like!! Of course whatever works for your baby is 👌🏻 these are just my thoughts from a lactation standpoint ☺️
Tbh, my girl ended up LOVING some vintage pacifiers my mom found from back in the day. I'm talking bright plastic base, brown rubbery nipple, flat on one side, rounded on the other. Probably not the best, I know, but they worked. I actually had to take them away because she started biting them once she got teeth and they fell apart. 🙃
My baby would only use the maam. Little mouth and low palette causing a pretty easy gag reflex. She nursed fine and is still nursing at 12 m. So, I did try the round ones but they didn't work.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but is there any benefit to using pacifiers? The baby doesn’t get any milk from them (obviously), and--I'm not sure if this is a debunked myth--I was told that they were bad for babies teeth. Appreciate your response!
The benefit is psychological, not physical. If they're upset, they can suck the pain away. Or if they're tired or actively sleeping, it helps them sleep better. If you don't give them a pacifier, then you have to be the pacifier, which is a huge time suck. I mean, the first month, sure. But do you still want to be the walking pacifier at 12 months?
Not to be that person but… first lol Anyways this is great info I never even thought about how pacifier shapes could matter to a breast fed baby but honestly it makes sense that it should be nipple shaped. I have a bunch of mam pacifiers but now I’m going to try a couple different shapes once baby comes :D
Don't spend too much on it. I have 3 kids, all breastfed as babies, and none of them cared for the round ones. The bulbous ones seemed to be the general favorite amongst all 3.
No no. This is pacifiers, nothing horrific is happening ☺️ these are just reviews from a lactation professionals point of view! Babies like what they like ♥️
My kiddo was a premie and refused to take a pacifier. Whenever they tried to give her 1 she would just be holding it in her hand. She absolutely hated them. Never could get to use one.
@@mamanursetina I think they were talking in general, we were with 3 weeks old and 3 months old baby (two different ones). They told that specifically for my baby the asymmetric one will be the best (he didn't take it anyway lol) and in general those round ones are bad for the palate🤷🏻♀️
I do not have kids yet but I am curious about if the design matters as the baby gets older? I remember having a pacifier as a toddler and it looked a lot like the 2nd one but as an infant mine looked more like the first one.
That first pacifier can change the shape of the baby's pallet and teeth if used for too long. I've seen it on all the babies who use it at my job ( I work in child care)
The second one not so much but it was very slight. I gave my kids the mam/walmart ones and my oldest has a slight overbite, but I'm calling it genetic from her dad😂😂
I just got the Ninni co in the mail and it is very squishy baby isn’t here yet so I don’t know if it works but it has the wide base and squish I hope not too much
Yeeeaaahh, not for my kids. Just buy one of several brands because every kid is different. We got a few brands like that first silicone one and they always fell out immediately because the base is too heavy. My daughter was a pacifier baby and she loved the avent air best. My son hated anything silicone and we could never get him to take a paci or a bottle...or a teether or a nipple shield. If it was silicone he would bite it and spit it out immediately. Both were exclusively breastfed.
Im so sad to hear your opinion on mam. Our twins that had ties could ONLY latch on mam pacifiers and one of our babies could only use mam bottles the first 6 months!
Philips avent soothie is another great option. In the end tho babies prefer what they prefer and we do what we need to!! These are just things to consider from a lactation eyeball
I will be honest I am not entirely sure the shape of a pacifier should be similar to the breast for babies that are breast and bottle fed but also a ftm so I don't know much
