Compilation of the best personal item size travel backpacks! A packing demo will be following showing how to pack these bags to fit in the personal item sized bin in budget airlines. See specs below 👇 Packing Demo Video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Bp-eLyREnM.html
If packed properly, these packs will fit in an 18"x14"x8" bin on budget airlines like American, Frontier, Spirit, and Southwest. However they are too large for more restrictive airlines like Norwegian or RyanAir.
Note: At the time of posting, the Patagonia Tres 25L is out of stock. I will post on my Facebook when it becomes available.

I re-watched this now that I'm further along on my bag journey. There's a lot of info packed into this vid!!! There's stuff I missed the first time around! Thanks for all the work and perspective you put into bag reviews! It's really interesting to see the difference in design philosophy and design choices of different manufacturers! Everything is intentional and they made choices and trade-offs.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 12 дней назад
Exactly. One of my first bags, the Tortuga Air, I didn't like because of the laptop sleeve position and a few other design choices. But then after years of traveling and trying new bags, I actually like that bag a lot more now because other bags have similar or worse design features. There are a lot of tradeoffs and often a bag that creates a feature you like will cause another feature to be worse. There are a lot of tradeoffs and it's impossible to have everything you want in one pack.

Your fantastic…. I’ve had several personal bags in the ($100-200) range.. My 2 all time bags that are my 100% favorite are: 1) Osprey Porter 30 The older model..It’s far better then the newer version.. 2) Knack Bag Small (Blue) I use that daily and it’s by far the best everyday small bag you can buy.. It holds my Apple MacBook 13 Air and it has a lot of organized pockets.. Blessings Greg

I'm assuming you have the Series 1 Knack Pack? I haven't tried the latest update, but I think it only comes in Large and Medium for now. The Osprey Daylite 26+6 is a solid option for a personal item sized pack too, but not an EDC bag. It would have made it into this video but I didn't have it yet.

The greatest thing about compression straps imho is that they relieve pressure on the zippers. The second best thing about compression straps is that you can now easily temporarily attach stuff to the outside of your bag, say a light jacket if it's suddenly warm and the bag itself is already packed to capacity.

@@OneBagTravels Thank you, I'll check the video out! Generally speaking, are ultralight bags more comfortable than their heavier counterparts? I don't particularly care about weight, but I'd be happy to shed the extra pounds and go for a more minimalist option if it would be more comfortable.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
@@FadilKarim I'd say generally speaking ultralight bags are less comfortable because they use less materials and padding for the shoulder straps and back padding on the bag. Ultralight bags rely more on good design to make a pack comfortable because they can't rely on just a thickly padded shoulder strap. Some bags do well with this like the Dragonfly, it's a small pack, but they managed to make it decently comfortable with fewer materials.

I was looking for packs that were under the personal item size. The Dragonfly is a great pack but it's a little long at 19.5". However you could probably get away with it as a personal item, it doesn't look big and I doubt an airline would check. I like the Dragonfly more now that they removed the logo and added some new colors. Still one of my favorite minimalist packs, just a tad large for this video.

@@OneBagTravels Thanks for the update. I'm not sure the Patagonia is worth the extra $ ?? over the Osprey. Thoughts on Osprey 30? I've read that as long as it's not extremely overpacked it will work. Cabin Zero makes great packs, very high quality for the price imo. Another option for you could be a packable daypack, like the Aer Go Pack 2. It's small enough to fit in your carry-on when it's empty, but allows you to have a nice sturdy daypack for EDC. Also it's a good to pack light when you leave, and have an option for overflow for extra snacks, souveniers etc. on your return flight.

@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
COR Surf Island Hopper is an almost exact knock-off of the Cotopaxi Allpa. I've never tried it, but it's $70 cheaper, could be worth trying but risky because you don't know about the company. I've never heard of the DB Ramverk 26L, it looks interesting, kind of heavy (3.5 lbs) for a 26L pack though. I haven't tried anything from Solo, they have a lot of laptop pack options. I get the impression their packs are lower on the quality scale, but again I havent tested them. Tucano is another brand I haven't tried. They have so many packs it's kind of overwhelming, the Tugo is the only one that seems like it would work for travel, reminds me of packs from Cabin Zero, simply made with decent quality.

@@OneBagTravels I just got back from a trip using the Island Hopper 28. It was very good, but not sure if it's a keeper for me. It's pretty close to a Cotopaxi Allpa 28 clone. I can't tell the zipper brand or fabric speifics, but everything felt sturdy. Outside zippers were smooth, inside zippers are tiny - I would add pulls if I keep it. The pack isn't terribly rigid, which is good for overstuffing, but if you do, it makes the laptop section hard to close, so always pack that first. The hidden storage pouches on the back are small, but perfect for travel docs/money, and the bottom one is very well hidden under the luggage strap. Fit under seat on Southwest flights without an issue. Nice having a water bottle holder - fits at most a 24oz plastic bottle you'd get at 7-11, but not a thicker thermos style bottle, Biggest problems for me were the backpack straps. They were not comfortable and I always had a hard time cinching them tighter against my frame. The chest strap wasn't big enough and too tight on me, and no hip belt. Also, straps can't tuck into bag. The luggage strap was useful, but it's a little thin and the bag would wobble a bit when moved on top of roller bag. Wish it had handles on all sides. Nitpick for me is that the outside color options are just okay, but I appreciated for the black bag the interior is lime green and easier to find things. I think I'll end up with an Allpa 28 or 35 - bag is strictly for maximizing personal item volume and not for walking around.

Generally the CPL for shorter trips or warm areas. However I'm constantly testing packs so it changes a lot 😆
@ootz0rz

@@OneBagTravels why the CPL for warm areas, it seemed like the carry had very little ventilation?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
@@ootz0rzIt's more the size, 24L is much easier in warm areas because you don't need to pack as much. It would be much more difficult if you needed to fit a jacket in there. Good point on the air ventilation though. It's not great on this pack, but that isn't usually the highest consideration on my list. I'd much rather have a comfortable, well made pack with great organization. My back will get sweaty either way, just slightly less quickly if it has good ventilation.
@ootz0rz
@ootz0rz Год назад
@@OneBagTravels gotcha, fair enough when considering hot+humid destinations on the ventilation! I've been looking for a good all-around day-bag lately and have found myself fixating on strap/back ventilation, but perhaps it's not as big of a deal as it is in my head. Currently considering the Aer Flight Pack 3, Boundary Supply Stasis Sling, Boundary Supply Errant Sling, Mission Workshop Spar Sling, and Alpaka Bravo X Sling. Have experience with any of them? I was considering having something I can toss my iPad + airpod max into during the flight... and then use during the day at my destination. This being separate from my normal main carry-on bag (Peak Design Travel 40L) The flight pack is a bit of an outlier as it's the biggest and a backpack. But I could use it as a daily bag for when I'm working remotely and heading to cafes and such too which is appealing; getting more use out of it!

Most European airlines have strict size and weight limits on personal item bags, typically 2 kg. As such be careful if you come here and intend to take short haul flights on European carriers. Those bags empty have near on half your weight limit so you won't be able to carry much in them. Additionally they are obviously far larger than your approved laptop case size so they are going to attract the attention of the gate agents.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
2kg is a little low. Most allow 7-12 kg personal item, for example RyanAir has a 10kg limit. But yes, European budget airlines tend to be more restrictive than US airlines. There aren't any standards for personal item sizes and I'm not trying to imply all of these bags will work as a personal item on all airlines. Many of these bags will fit many US airline sizers, but not the more restrictive budget European airlines, for example RyanAir (40x25x20 cm).
@R0swell5104
@R0swell5104 Год назад
@@OneBagTravels I stand corrected although TAP has a 2kg limit and others have combined carry on/personal item limits. All I am saying is that people should aware that the limits here are generally less generous that US carriers.

I’m sorry to report that they are all too big for travel to or within Europe. Even major airlines like Lufthansa, now list size limits for personal item (30x40x10cm or 80cm total).
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
Yes, my criteria is 18x14x8" (46x36x20cm) which is a common personal size limit in the US. But many airlines are much smaller, especially European carriers. I'm flying Airbondi next week (40x30x20 limit) and I'm worried my bag is just a little too large 😣 I'd like to do another post sometime looking at bags that fit these types of smaller personal size limits.

Idk man, not sure if I would risk trying to board with both a rolling carry on and a 28 backpack…would hate to have the agent force me to check one of them, especially if I have valuables in them which I usually do… For me, 25L is about my limit for a personal item.

Hi, Geoff, I hope you received my " coffee donation" ! Are you comfortable with telling me which brand/size you like best for my "personal items bag"? I will be flying on British Airways, and can't find dimensions for this on their site. I know you like the green Cotopaxi Alpha there. It is fantastic. I would like to spend around $100, but the $170 for the Coto might be OK. I will not be using my personal items bag much at all. Perhaps maybe 3 or 4 times in my life. Thanks, Joey Also, I will not be taking my laptop. I hope this gives you an idea of what I need. And, I trust you for simply telling me what you recommend.

This is the British Airways site Cabin Bag: 56 x 45 x 25cm (22 x 18 x 10in) Hang Bag: 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6in) www.britishairways.com/en-us/information/baggage-essentials That's a pretty small hand bag, I don't think any of the bags in this video are that small. I don't even know if I own a bag that small, it's basically a small daypack. The Cabin bag can be basically anything, that's quite a large bag. Cotopaxi is good if you like the clamshell style. A good budget brand is Cabin Zero, most of their bags have a very simple design, but they're good quality for the price, and tend to be pretty inexpensive. I think the Military 28 is

Many of the viewers wanna see the largest packed bags (like the osprey porter 46) fit into the smallest dimensions like... the Frontier airlines personal item container, since the all-you-can-fly deal 'everyone' purchased starts in May.
