Well said Claus, for example and he admits this, Tim Pierce is not big on fast alternate picking. He is master of hammer ons and pull offs. But he makes it all sound so good.

I am struggling with legato. Well, hammer-ons in particular. The ring and pinky are slow to the fretboard. I can crank up the volume to get it, but my legato isn't good. I'm working on no volume and trying to hear my finger on the fretboard. 3 finger is getting better. I can't do the 3 to 4 finger hammer-on at all. I work on it a little but it gets tired fast. Do you have video's on starting hammer-ons?

I'd never advise to start with legato. It is maybe easier in the beginning but it does not develop both hands and 2 hand synchronization and timing becomes a problem. It is much harder to work on sync when hands are on very different level and it does not help with changing strings either. I think alternate picking on 1 string and directional picking 99% of time (when possible) when chaning the strings will give you most benefits in the beginning: rhythm, control and reasonable speed. You can, of course, practice same phrases using legato too, but I'd strongly recommend it only as an addition to the practice. Once you have good timing (not necessarily be super fast at it, the feeling and consistency is the key), then you can start adding more and more of legato as a new texture/color to your playing and it will work perfectly. But other way around is much, much harder. Unfortunately, I did this mistake and fixing this issues is very painful process which is now taking me years to get rid of.

When I learned speed picking, it was relatively easy for me because of using the edge of a desk and my pick and just getting the very tip of the pick. Only enough to just connect the tip of the pick to barely just catch that edge and applied thw same idea to the guitar string. Used the same idea on 3 notes per string and countless other scales.
