Most pubs in UK had Extra Cold pumps installed, alongside the standard Guinness pumps about tens years ago. And Guinness promoted the bejaysus out of Guinness Extra Cold to non Guinness drinkers. Sales were three to one for colder Guinness and sales improved considerably generally as a result (hence the new Guinness Hopstore London coming on stream soon), so a lot of the non "Irish" pubs removed the standard Pint configured ones. London & South East is generally considerably hotter in Summer than any place in Ireland (by a good 6-10°c), so the colder pint also made Guinness an all year round pint. But yeah you will notice it if you come from Ireland for a visit, or do the reverse trip...

You might not see this but there is an Irish version of the word "domeage" In fact there is no direct translation but here it is: "MAOLÓG" Definition: When you fill something up to the brim but then keep on adding more, the part that lies heaped above the top of the container is the maológ.

@@deccyboi4218 Kilburn is one of the melting pots of London. The main wave of Irish immigrants who came over lived here first as it had digs / bedsits which were easily affordable to your working class single man. As them lot made a living for themselves, got married and had kids, they moved out to the suburban areas, for example Ruislip, Northwood, Barnet, Enfield etc - while newer generations of immigrant workers (Polish, Romanians etc) have become the dominant diaspora in places like Kilburn, and brought their culture with them.

I lived near South Harrow, back in the day, an Irish fella took over the eclipse bar near where I lived, when he took over the Guinness quality, went through the roof. As soon as he stopped managing the pub, it went shite. When Guinness is decent, you can easily drink 8 pints. What the Guru said about looking over and thinking about a pint, I used to think about the pub five mins from me. Like if I had a hangover, & didn't want to move, I would be envisioning a pint being brought to me on a tray, over to the flat.😂🤣👌

Extra cold was a way for Guinness to cover up the aftertaste you get from Guinness that doesn't have a quick turn over. Nicest pint you could get back in the day was a room temperature pint. But a pub had to have a high turnover or it would taste like shite. It was also much harder to pull a pint, and there was a good bit of waste. Guinness made it mandatory for a draft to be put thought a cooler over 20 years ago. And Don't get me started about how they fucked up the recipe trying to make it more consistent, again about 20 years ago. Guinness is not the drink it was 25/30 years ago.

@anfear9764 2 года назад
@@mattloades8464 They’re both great pubs. The sheephaven (if you don’t like Celtic FC) is probably best avoided on a Matchday.. I’ve always found the Auld Shillelagh a bit of a pain in the arse to get to as I don’t live anywhere near that part of London. It’s great for GAA. Gets a sort of modern new Irish crowd. Young professionals as such. I’ve lived in London 20 years and it’s fascinating to see how the demographic of the Irish in London has changed, and the pubs too. Mostly for the best but I can remember sticky carpets and dog bones on the floor, in many of the Irish pubs across London. There’s still a few gems to be found. The Parish in Wembley, hasn’t changed in 20 years, the pride of Pimlico, o Donoghue’s (Goldhawk Rd) The quays (Holloway Rd) is long gone but used to be brilliant. The claddagh ring in Hendon is a gem. Again great for sport. Most if not all are a bit of a stretch journey wise for me now, and with the advent of GAA GO (for me personally anyway) it’s less of an incentive to travel so far. Honourable mentions to Connollys Chiswick Mother redcaps Holloway Rd The kingdom (Kilburn) if it’s still going.. Many happy memories in all of the above.
