The Best places to retire in the u.s. and the best places to retire. I have done the research for you by consolidating information from a variety of places.
The worst states to retire:
1) New Jersey
2) Maryland
3) New York
4) West Virginia
5) Connecticut
New Jersey has the worst combination of not only being among the top 6 most expensive states - for example, it has the highest property taxes in the U.S. at 2.4% vs. an average of 1.2% for the rest of the country, but they also have one of the highest costs of health care, and below average quality of life.
Retirees in Maryland have the 2nd highest household income, but high taxes and cost of living will exhaust that pretty quickly. It’s 17% higher than average to live in this state. They don’t tax social security, but IRAs are taxable. And they tax estates and inheritance, so it’s miserable for your heirs.
New York is one of the most expensive states to live in, with one of the highest poverty rates among retirees at over 11%. The state has high property tax and sales tax as well. And if that’s to bad enough, Healthcare is also expensive.
West Virginia has better than average affordability, but its health care is one of the two worst in the nation, and Quality of life is in the bottom 10. And the state is not tax friendly either.
Connecticut is the least tax friendly state in the country. Real estate taxes are the 2nd highest, retirement income is fully taxed with no exemptions, and all this is on top of one of the highest cost of living states - being 24% higher than average.
The Five Best States to retire:
1) South Dakota
2) New Hampshire
3) Florida
4) Idaho
5) Utah
South Dakota is most famously known as the state that has Mount Rushmore. It is also highly affordable with no state income tax, and very low cost of living, and low health care costs. There is zero taxes on retiree income, and there is no inheritance tax. There are plenty of outdoor activity options like hiking, hunting, and fishing. Retirees in this state are among the most enthusiastic about the state citing social and community as being attractive. The main drawback in moving to this state is the bitterly cold winter weather.
New Hampshire is among the 10 tax friendliest states. They do not impose income on most forms of income which means they don’t tax social security or retirement income, income from 401Ks or IRAs. They also do not have any sales tax. They do tax dividends and interest income on taxable accounts. The state of their retirees’ health is among the best in the country. They also have low crime, good cultural entertainment options. Weather is cold - which is great if you enjoy winter weather, but not so good if you like heat. The main detractors for this state are its higher than average living costs ranking 43 out of 50 states, and the cold winter weather.
Florida has the highest number retirees in the country. So maybe they know something. Not only do you get warm weather year round in much of the state - the average yearly temperature is a pleasant 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or 21 degrees Celsius. And the tax situation is particularly friendly for retirees. Florida has no income tax, estate tax or inheritance tax. They don’t tax social security or other retirement income either. Health care availability is among the best but the cost of that healthcare is higher than average. Quality of life considering entertainment options is also top notch. Pretty much the only thing you will need to worry about is scorching hot weather in the Summer, and of course, an increasing number of hurricanes. Oh and they also have a higher than average crime rate.
Idaho as you probably know is known for their potatoes. But it is also one of the most affordable states. Although they do have a 6% sales tax and income tax, they do not tax social security, and do not have an estate or inheritance tax. Natural beauty and outdoor entertainment, particularly in the winter is abundant. Low crime rates, good health scores for their retirees - they scored top 10 in well being, low cost of living, and low healthcare costs. The main drawbacks are lack of cultural options and cold winter weather.
Utah has the second best overall health in the country for its 65 and over community. It is one of the largest states in land area. They have a myriad of options for outdoor recreation, with 5 national parks, and 5 nations forests. Cost of living is lower than average. And their overall crime rates are among the lowest in America. They do tax social security, but overall tax rates are relatively low, and the poverty rate among seniors is the 3rd lowest in the country. Access to health care is also quite good. The main drawbacks would be cold winter weather, and a lack of a culturally diverse population.
Do you agree with the list? Please put a comment below.

I’ve lived in Florida most of my life and was an over the road truck driver for many years so I know many, if not most states. Also we moved seventeen times before I graduated from High School. Florida is nice but my parents moved yo Georgia to retire. They moved to a small city near the coast right off I-95 just North of Jacksonville, Florida, Woodbine. They lived on a river that was 35 miles from the ocean but the tide still rises and falls about six feet. The cost of living was much lower than Florida. Kings lad and Saint Mary are two costal cities to the South just over the border into Georgia.

The problem here is personal preference. Some people are going to want to retire where their money will go the farthest. Some will prefer a country setting. Some are looking into RV’ing. Some may prefer the convenience of a suburban area. Some want warm weather. There just isn’t a “Best place” and “worst place” for everyone. There are just too many needs, desires, requirements and other variables to pinpoint a universal best and worst. The best way is to consider ones needs, desires, and preferences, and look into the many locations that provide those things.
@ArvinAsh
@ArvinAsh 4 года назад
I don't disagree with you, but some states are definitely better than others in terms of cost, lifestyle, etc.
@a.t.strock2960
@a.t.strock2960 4 года назад
Arvin Ash to a degree, yes. Some of that depends on personal wealth (or lack thereof, of course!), and some can depend on ones medical situation, and so many other variables. What might be a good cost for you, financially, might be a disaster for me. And what if the cost is good, but you aren’t comfortable with the local politics/religion/whatever. For example, there is a city in my state that is dominated by one specific religion. If one is not of that faith, it could be extremely uncomfortable to live there, regardless of the housing costs or other potential benefits. I just think it has to be exceptionally difficult to find any “one size fits all” locations, as diverse as we humans are.
@GrnXnham
@GrnXnham 4 года назад
@@a.t.strock2960 Yep, everyone is different but I think videos like this are useful because sometimes it gives us information that we hadn't thought about. For example, one might say "Oh I want to live in that state. It has beautiful weather and scenery!" but they had no clue that the cost of living was so high. Now if you are a billionaire, this might be irrelevant. But for most people, money is at least a partial consideration. We are retiring in about 5 years and I have been watching lots of videos like this, compiling information from all of them. Of course, the videos don't agree on which places are the best or worst but it's useful to see what criteria they use.

There is no increase in the number of hurricanes...in fact since 1880, when records were first kept, landfall hurricanes have decreased. The only thing that has increased since 1880 is the vastly larger numbers of people now living near the ocean and the corresponding increase in property damage happening with even relatively weak storms...

Texas, Nevada, Washington state, and Tennessee have no state income tax and many states like Mississippi don't take Social Security, and a lot retires move to Alabama due to the low cost of living, and South Carolina is considered a top retirement state. Most people who move for retirement move for economic reasons and for warmer weather. Most of these states are cold weather states. Most retirees are not considering moving from one cold state for another.
@242HP

That's true, except that southern Utah, around St. George, gets a lot of retirees because since it's so close to Nevada it doesn't get as much snow or cold weather as in the mountains or northern Utah. The downside is that they have many 100+ degree days there in the summer (with low humidity).

You forgot to mention the large Mormon population as a drawback to living in Utah. If you're not Mormon yourself, prepare to be discriminated against by those who are in everything from employment to friendships. The Mormons have a very narrow view of what is an acceptable way to live your life, so if you're not married and don't have or want kids, they won't like you. Also, Utah is a place of temperature extremes. Living here for 2 years I can see why it's not rated highly for climate mildness. It can get very cold in the winter, but also very hot in the summer, with several days in the 90s and even above 100 degrees, especially in the southern part of the state. If you're from the east coast, you will likely miss the greenery, as Utah is very dry so there's lots of brown vegetation and few trees in much of the valley areas. There are so few trees that you can actually see the Salt Lake City skyline from the airport miles away.

Texas is sure not getting retirement friendly. There's no state income tax but they sure make it up for property taxes if you own a home. The weather is horrible during the summer and you can get snow and ice storms. The price of homes are going up like California and it is getting very crowded, and the highways are bumper-to-bumper. State tax 8.25. A new roof on your house every 8 years from hail storms and hearing the sirens go off at least every three years wondering if your house is going to get hit with a tornado. Looking at Arizona. I just retired and now I'm ready to leave Texas. It's getting just like California!😣😥

I was also born in NYC and raised in the suburbs there, and unless you're talking about the St. George area, I disagree with calling Utah winters "balmy". Utah is not North Carolina or Florida, which I also have lived in. Last winter was milder everywhere in the US, but the one before that was pretty active as far as snowfall. The winters are long here, especially during an active weather season, so if you don't like the cold and snow, you shouldn't move to Utah.

Thanks for the video Arvin. For folks like me who despise cold winters, Georgia might be another good option, IF retiring no earlier than age 64. Georgia has a $65,000 deduction on retirement income once you reach that age. No tax on Social Security, low property taxes, low vehicle registration fees, very low auto insurance rates (45% less than Michigan, on average), and good diversity, which brings some interesting cultural variety to life, and variety IS the spice of life. Georgia might not be a good option if you enjoy a six-figure RMD or have significant health care needs, as U.S. News ranks Georgia at #42.

Weather is way too hot in the summer, god help you if the electricity and/or ac goes out. I find the healthcare to be good, lots of activities but the housing costs are going up fast. Also this has got to be the world's capital of roaches. The hurricanes don't seem to get this far inland but there are regular storms that knock down trees and cause big problems all the time. As a NH resident, I don't get why so many people recommend it for retiring. Income tax doesn't matter when you're retired, but property tax does. I think Idaho and Utah are getting a bum rap on lack of cultural attractions and diversity. For one both states have Native American tribes who are interesting to study and associate with. Idaho has a Basque population. The Basque were sheepherders.Various cities have ethnic pockets too. For example Pocatello has an active Greek population, since Greek workers were brought in to work on the railroads. Boise has a Shakespeare festival; Sun Valley sponsors a prestigious writer’s conference. Utah boasts the Utah Symphony, ballet and outstanding modern dance concerts. Logan in the north does a wonderful opera festival; in the south is the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Both states have strong university systems .Utah has a high tech corridor that runs through Salt Lake to Provo where large and small high tech firms thrive. BYU and the U of U have esteemed high tech programs. A lot of people come to study and then stay. Another blessing to those living in the region is the Huntsman Cancer Center in SLC. If you have to fight that fight, you can get world class treatment close by. (I live two hours away and was treated there.) So, after explaining all this , Idaho a Utah do not welcome CA residents who try to bring their liberal politics with them. Both states are highly conservative. And yes, the winters can be long and challenging.

@Maxilyn Capell Well said. I would only add that the winter climate in many areas of southern Utah is very mild and a draw for "snowbirds" and retirees. Washington County ranks nationally between 1st and 3rd for population growth in recent years. There is local concern, well founded, of so many Californians moving here. I think the biggest long-term concern though-and it will be huge- is going to be for enough water, which isn't being factored into development. But it sure is a lovely place to live. I figure if a state has a low population, it's because there's something wrong with it causing people not to want to live there. I'm retired and living in Houston, Texas. I was considering Washington State for a while -- the warmest, lowest cost-of-living city I can find, but I'll probably just suffer through the Texas heat because everything else is good.

I wouldn't recommend NH. The property taxes are very high here, that's how the towns get money. This should have been in the video. Be prepared to set aside five hundred a month just to pay them, and it will go up every year. Rent is very high here too because landlords have expensive property taxes. Plus a lot of hidden taxes such as high cost of registering your car. Add all that to heating cost for November through April, and it is expensive to live in NH.

Why were the low tax states of Nevada, Tennessee, and Texas left off your list, yet the high tax states of Idaho and Utah put on it? Washington and Alaska are also have no state income tax, but the cost of living is extremely high, so I can see why they were left off.
@ArvinAsh
@ArvinAsh 4 года назад
The ones you mentioned are not necessarily the lowest tax states. You have to look at more than just income taxation, you also have to look at sales tax, property tax, inheritance tax, death tax. Also, costs are involved - these include price of homes, rentals, food, services, etc. If you look only at income tax rates, it is missing the bigger picture. And this does not take into account other factors such as culture, safety, quality of life etc.

Great place to live.

NO has extremely high crime rate and one of the top cities in the country in homicide rates. It is miserably humid in the summer. And, hurricanes can be devastating. The only good things about NO is food and jazz.

I live near Chicago and a lot of people are leaving for Tennessee due to the high taxes and violence here. I want to leave this rotten state of Illinois myself!
