The very best points from Coco Gauff's first round upset against Venus Williams at The Championships in 2019. This is the official Wimbledon RU-vid page. To keep up with Wimbledon throughout the year, visit wimbledon.com/mywimbledon
Gauff looks like a baby here. She earned that win and went on to win her next 3 matches against more experienced players. It's 2023 and she's still going strong. Is ranked #6 female tennis player in the world and #1 in doubles. She's AWESOME.
Venus ALWAYS hits hard no matter what; unless she’s significantly injured. She hit hard in this match but was still laboured in her approach. She normally plays with more energy despite her age and conditions.
I love Venus but I don’t get why she didn’t take advantage of several of those short balls by Gauff. She hit many shots in the middle of the court near the service line; why didn’t Venus come to the net, attack those, and hit a clean winner or finish the point with a volley?
Several others commented that she looked very tired that day, so that could be a factor. Another possible reason is that it could simply not be her playstyle. Djokovic actually gets many opportunities to rush the net after a short ball and chooses not to, for example. I'm not really knowledgeable in the world of women's tennis, but a lot of the older generation (like the Williams' sisters) appear to be more baseline punchers and look a bit hesitant to move up often.
It always makes me sad when I see legends not be able to keep up with the younger generation anymore. Aging is inevitable for us all, and one day, Coco will be in Venus’ shoes. It makes me appreciate Coco even more because of how respectful and classy she always is. I hope young people look up to her and see what it means to be a class act.
If that wasn't first round match Venus would have won,her shots were there her movement not in the best form but good enough to win that girl in grass. The problem is that Venus need easy opponents in first rounds so she can make a good tournament.
@@arischaer1084 Well Australia, yes. But I think what he said is true. Venus always starts slow. Sometimes she looks as if she is not interested at all. It is all about the motivation. Yes physicality has a lot to do with her performances but if she is motivated she can do serious damage. 2017 season is a good example for that.
What nobody might realise is that keeping that hand shake going and make Venus listen was the part demanding most courage - she was ignorant of that because she'd just won. In twenty years she will have got to the point that she prefers the tournaments of 2019 and 2023 to be reversed. The difference, a calmer teen period and so much less affliction. The damage is done now, and might have been present long before the match against Kenin.
Venus has stopped going for her shots which irks me . I can’t really credit the opponent because Venus simply rallies and the opponent is uninterested in the same.
Le faltó maña y experiencia a Venus, como q eso de darte al tú por tú ante una persona más joven, rápida y tenaz no es tan buena idea. Terminarás fundido!
This is nothing but an embarrassment to a great champion Venus Williams. Coco has shown nothing but a lust for the spotlite! I would not subscribe to this channel for all the money in the world!
