I remember in the 80s Azuma was asked if he could beat mcGuigan and he replied his wife could beat mcGuigan, it was funny at the time. but I always remember Azuma constantly chasing this fight with absolutely no success
@@PJP812 Barry beat an old past his prime Eusebio Pedrosa, whom earlier in his career with 19 defenses, Salvador Sanchez and Azumah wanted no part of on unifying the titles. Maguigan was way overrated.
Actually Sanchez was indifferent to a Pedroza fight, and it was Pedroza who didn’t want it. He was content to pad his reign with whatever nobody the WBA could drag up.
The first Nelson-Fenech fight was called a Split Draw. Nelson had held his training camp even though he was battling malaria. He recovered only a few days before the fight. In the rematch He dominated and knocked out Fenech. In the post fight interview Nelson said, “Fenech is a boy. I am a Man.” ☃️❄️
This man Professor Azumah Nelson put scaring living daylight out them all, sanchez RIP our brother will tell you about the terrible terror the best ever in his era hands down.
San Juan (Puerto Rico) December 8,1984 By the age of 26, Bazooka *Wilfredo Gómez* had seen more successful title defenses of one Belt than most fighters could experience in multiple careers. A record *17 defenses* of the WBC junior featherweight belt, all by stoppage, and a shiny *WBC featherweight prize* are what Gomez brought into the ring against “The Professor” himself, *Azumah Nelson.* Behind on the three Judges scorecards, *Zoom Zoom* rallied in that Last Round to become World champion in Puerto Rico. 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
yeah got a claim to fame there.. taking the true class sanchez to the distance oly to get azoomaaad with a devastating uppercut, he just didnt see it coming
"We wánt Danny Boy" was a constant cry from Azuma and his handlers, it was in reference to the song always sung usually by Barry McGuigan's dad before his fights and Azuma and co started using the expression to taunt the McGuigan camp into making a matchup . With absolutely no success I might add.
Newbon (aka Complete prick): "Not much we can say to Pat Cowdell - he's absolutely shattered" Nelson ('The Professor') impassively: "that's right" LOL @ British boxers.
@102413112669130212098 What you talking about ? Barry McGuigan never ducked anybody . . He could've beaten Azumah Nelson and what a fight that would've have been . . The promoters couldn't agree on how much each fighter should get paid . . .
What I'm talking about is Azumah called McGuigan out right after demolishing Pat Cowdell in his great post fight interview. Any fighter worthy of being called Champ must respond to this but Barry never. PS Barry beat an OLD Pedroza
Granted , Azumah Nelson was a brilliant Boxer one of the greatest Featherweights of all time . . But he was beatable as the legendary Salvador Sanchez did do so in 1982 . . A rematch was in the pipeline for 1983 but it didn't happen as Sanchez died in a Car Wreck 2 months after the Nelson fight . . PS Pedroza was 29 when McGuigan fought him , hardly old is it ? He was the reigning Champion for 7 years . .
Nigel McKenna Salvador was indeed a great champ at time of there fight Azummah was a relative novice and a late replacement. I meant old in terms of boxing fights/wars re: Pedroza !
Love the guy... total warrior... however, he lost that first Fenech fight 10-2, 0r 9-3, and that robbed Jeff of his rightful place as the first undefeated four division champ, something he did deserve, and that "draw" as much as the KO that followed ended him as a fighter. But all respect for Nelson who gave the great Sanchez all he could handle in his last tragic fight.
Remember also Azumah fought salvador sanchez on 2 weeks notice. Nobody ever did that. All things being equal I believe salvador sanchez would have lost his title
NELSON knew what he was getting into when he fought Sanchez. Plus Nelson was a beast that stayed in shape no excuses. NELSON was winning that fight but got caught just like the rest. All great fighters get caught unless they retire early or pass away.
@@obiyanko2019 Not taking anything away from the brother. The man was a genius in the ring. But if he wasn't ready he would not have took the fight. It just sucks that Sanchez passed before they could get a rematch. I got nothing but Respect for Nelson.
never forget that was azumah's first high profile fight. he took it on 2 weeks notice. Nobody ever did that. All things being equal salvador sanchez would have been drubbed
Yes. Nelson started that fight by showing Sanchez the Ali shuffle. By half way Sanchez had him doing the chicken dance. No other fighter beat him so easily or badly and none but Sanchez stopped him. Nelson, like Laporte and Gomez, had to wait until Sanchez was no longer around to become world champion.
@@markcynic808 "had to wait until Sanchez was no longer around" Sanchez died two months after he fought Nelson and they had a rematch scheduled. Its by no means beyond the realms of possibility that Nelson would have won. Any man who can jump into the ring with Sanchez in his 15th fight on two weeks notice with a broken mouthpiece and give him the hardest fight of his life deserves to be considered as a potential victor in a rematch.
Yes, he was given the beating of his life by the younger Sanchez. Sanchez had agreed to fight him at late notice. Knocked down twice and then stopped, Sanchez taught him the chicken dance. Azumah was great, but Sanchez was one of the greatest I've ever seen, beating four subsequent world champions during his short reign.
