Guitar World's top 11 best guitar practice amp list is a bit strange. That's what I'll be reacting to today. I haven't done a reaction video on the channel yet, but this seemed an interesting topic. In addition to reacting to Guitar World's list, I'll be explaining the logic behind it, and giving you my top 10 practice amps.

Guitar world is a magazine that requires advertising from guitar/amp/effect makers for its revenue stream....they are not going to alienate any potential advertiser by giving their products a bad rap. You have to take reviews in these magazines with a large pinch of salt.

The Yamaha THR range have always been sort of expensive for what they are. They are effectively lifestyle products produced in smaller numbers. I do like the sound and how easy they are to use. One amp that could play the roll of a desktop amplifier with way more use is the Katana head with the built-in speaker. And, it is still way cheaper than the THR!

YOu can connect a thr to your home stereo system if you want speakers. It outputs a hifi signal. That is the point of it.

I got the cream and green thr’s really like them both so simple and easy to use plus they sound great, reasonably cheap second hand too. Surprisingly loud for the footprint.

Elmo, I'm a big fan of your reviews. 1. A SME. A subject matter expert on guitars and amps. 2. Honest. Honest and almost unfiltered in your reviews. 3. Diplomatic. If a guitar or amp is bad, you say so, but take the time to say that the vendor does make good stuff but with different models. 4. Quirky. You are a bit quirky and always entertaining. Thank you, very good video. Whenever I search for anything, almost every list I find says only good things about stuff, however they are not nearly as good as they are described. So I think this will be useful for a lot of people.

Spark 40 is pretty much my go-to. It took me a lot of A/B with my Marshall to get a few tones to emulate that but once it was dialed in, I dig it. Not sure it's a good beginner amp because the stock tones and most of the gallery models were created by deaf people apparently and a beginner won't have a good tone reference but it is a fantastic practice amp.

If they provided good stock tones, people wouldn't buy downloads. I practice through a half stack, but considered getting a Spark for confidence.

My favorites are the yamaha THR10X, really great one, you can do what you want with it, good sound for electro acoustics, bass, and great metal tones, but you've also got an excellent clean sound (that takes pedals really good) and you can also find really good crunch tones, respect your guitar tone. The second one is the ibanez TSA15H with its ibanez speaker, excellent for pedals on clean tones and with an effect loop. Don't own the harley benton tube 15, but on my wish list ! Blackstars sound too " dark " for me (speakers ?).

Thanks, Elmo! Another great video. I have the Spark, Spark Mini, Mustang 40W, and THRII 30 watt. I find the Spark very dark sounding (and very processed sounding), The Spark mini pretty awesome (still very "processed" sounding), the Mustang pretty nice, and the THRII awesome. Of those 4, I think the character of the instrument comes through much better on the THR. What I mean by "processed sounding" is that I don't think the character of the guitar itself comes through as much on the Spark amps. Good sounds overall on those. The THR really lets a Strat sound like a Strat and a Les Paul sound like a Les Paul - for a price! (I think I paid $500 USD for it!) Of course, in the end we all have our personal preferences. Just on a sound basis (not cost), I think the #1 choice is appropriate for my taste. And I totally agree with you about the potential for corruption in these gear ratings! These guys all have their sponsors, don't they? Thanks again, brother. You make all of the amps sound awesome, BTW!

I have the original THR amp AND the newer THR10ii because Yamaha knows sound - they've been doing sound stuff for years in all forms. Yes, you pay a little more, but in my mind you get what you pay for - period. I can't gig anymore, but I still want quality sound, and Yamaha delivers. If it was junk, I would have tossed out the the first amp years ago. Yet it still sets on my desk, and it gets used. Sometimes it's an argument about which amp to use that day lol. I have D. Kowalski Dark Gene. It is the ultimate practice amp. Half watt of glorious tube tone and the classic Marshall topology. High quality circuit that is indestructible and easy to repair. It responds to your playing and takes pedals just like a proper tube amp does.

Back in the 80s, we had Guitarist magazine in the UK but you could also buy Guitar Player, Guitar World and Guitar for the Practicing Musician, on import from America. Great video as always Elmo. All the best brother. Carlo 👍🏼🎸

This is Why I love this channel, and Why I studied many of your videos before I went out and spent my Hard Earned money on a new guitar and amp. Though, I got "budget" gear, It's exactly as you stated in your reviews, the pro's and con's, that led me to choose what Best suits what Style of music I love and want to play... I rarely play the electric guitar, but this is my practice/playing for fun setup: - Harley Benton SC something DLX Gotoh - the cheapest wireless instrument thingy with good reviews - BOSS Katana Mini powered by 6 rechargeable AA batteries (I never used the main adapter) And for me this is absolutely perfect. No cables at all, I can set it up within mere seconds anywhere in our apartment and it's extremely convenient and super fun to play like that. Jump around the bedroom like a rockstar. Then get back to the acoustic guitar for work. I would absolutely recommend this, the Katana mini + the wireless system was something like 150 € together and it's loud enough and it sounds good enough. But I only have a pedal board for acoustic guitar, so I don't know how it works with pedals. But I heard some other amps in this size and weight range (it's completely made out of plastic so it weighs probably as much as the batteries) and it sounds bigger than it is.

in comparison the Blackstar sounds like a shoe box... and I just finished your video, love that you mention both, the Katana mini and even the affordable wireless systems ^^ and I agree, 600 € for a practice amp is totally ridiculous.

After 23-00 i am using only guitar without connections+imagination on my head ). On training - guitar - into scarlett solo- into PC speakera. When i alone -- TONEX+DELAY+LOOPER into scarlett or into cabinet and it is little loud! Nice video Elmo as always!

After trying a few different amps on the list, I have settled on a diy 7 watt solid state power amp and a vox 8" cabinet. For more features I run a multi effects pedal in front. I am a hobbyist and can understand why the list contains widely different amps for practicing.

Many thanks for this good and informing video. My current personal favorite practice amp is the Harley Benton Tube 15. It has a 1 watt switch, it sounds good clean and slightly crunchy, and for more gain I use a pedal in front of the amp. I compared the speaker of the Tube15C with two other speakers, and the stock speaker is ok. The Tube15C can be used for practice at home, for band rehearsals (if the drummer is not too loud), for recording via microphone and for gigs with a PA and monitoring, so the ideal amp in my humble opinion in case a 50 watts valve amp would be overkill. In case you need many different sounds and effect, a modelling amp probably is better, but in my case the Tube15 delivers all I need for practicing at home.

My picks would be DSL-1 (I do own) or Katana. The Fly3 though did surprize me in a positive way. The DSL can grow in your ecosystem, has fx loop as seperate jack to unplug the built in speaker and plug the amplifier section into another cab of choice. The Katana is a solid choice as well if you need more power/bottom end or built in fx. Nice video Elmo.

Elmo, love the channel! Love your honesty, I used to own a Roland microcube. I sold it 15 years ago. But due to your demos over the years. Always including the microcube. I found a used one, first version and snatched it up. The speaker was kind of worn out, so I replaced it with a Jenson, and it roars! Will never get rid of this one

I appreciate your opinions on these products. Most of us don’t have the time or money to really try & understand new gear in our respective environments. Of this list I’ve had three of these amps. The Orange RT 20, I grew out of in my first year of picking up the guitar (your right poor tones). The Katana Mk2, was okay. My biggest complaint is at higher gain you get a top end fizziness. (In fairness to the Katana I never hooked it up to the computer but that was a prerequisite of mine). For months, I’ve been very satisfied with the Line6 Catalyst 60. Of all the amps at this price point, or less, this was the quickest to get a good tone and then wait for it…PRACTICE.

microcube GX red for $20 a few years ago has survived many real amps in my own tournament of champs. old Peavey KBA50 turned out to be a real beast for a Bass amp and overall one man show unit. currently working on using a battery powered 50w Horn PA as a guitar amp with input/ output interupt jacks

This amp ... the Yamaha THR 30wii deserve absolutely that number one ranking (I already disagreed with your review in the past that was quite negative 😉 but I agree this is one of the most expensive) ... it is an amzing amp and the tones are just fantastic for that kind of amp ... The clean and crunch are just at the same quality level than very expensive valve amp. I did record my son (who's a professional guitarist/musician) whit it and the rendering is just brillant ... I have two Positive Grid (the Mini ! Excellent ! and the Go ... funny), Three Boss (including the Dual Cube LX which is quite good for the price and the Boss Katana and Boss Nextone 80w Artist which is FAR FAR FAR better than the Katana ...), one small Flamma (which is also really good for the price under 100 euros) and had a Vox, a Harley Benton and a Blackstar I sold because they were not good at all ... I am impatient to get the new Hotone , the HOTONE AP-30CR Pulze and if you can have it I would be quite happy to having your feedback on it 😃

Hey Elmo! Thank you so much for introducing me to the Micro Cube.....I now cant stop playing through it!!!! I have a beautiful 1970 Plexi in the studio and a couple more thangs but that Cube!!!!!!!! I shall be recording with it and putting it into a Fender deluxe clone.....for fun. Double Muff before it sounds absolutely beautiful........so the extra hours a day now is all your fault. Happy I have discovered your channel.....love it. Biked in the Arctic in Finland.....what a country.....fantastic!!!!!!!!

I’ve just received (yesterday) from Thomann a HoTone Pulze modeling combo amplifier…. It’s relatively new from the company… After unboxing it I just couldn’t finish noodling around with it… For a very long time I didn’t have so much fun with a gear for guitar playing/practicing as with this little thing…and I’ve had a few really really expensive stuff around me though I’m far from what you would call a professional musician… It’s just amazing… Wish You all the best and loads of greetings! 🙂

Very Cool, Thankyou. Awesome rundown of all these Amps. All my Amps are 15W 'Practice Amps', Peavey Rage 158, 1980's Fender Sidekick 15R with True Spring Reverb Tank, A Marshall MG15MSII Mini Stack with Reverb, accept a Vox VT40+ which is bigger and amazing. But a favorite I got a few Years ago is The Joyo 'Jam Buddy'. It is Such an Awesome little amp, is Rechargeable so can play 'anywhere' and even during Power Outages..... or at the beach, whatever. It has Drive and Delay and just an amazing sound and is user friendly. All the Best. Cheers

Glad you called it out about industry 'propaganda'. Will never be on any Best of List (except in forums who know better), I picked up a Quilter Superblock UK, an obscure little 25W analog amp, a tiny 6"x4"x1.5" for $400CAD. Needed a desktop amp I can run into my audio interface, cause I live in a shoebox seniors room but also wanted a powered amp if I needed a cab. Does JCM800 and VOX emulations reasonably well. Cab sim (XLR and Headphones) sounds pretty good but also does FRFR out. 25W speaker out jack has attenuator for 4, 8 and 16 ohms. So far not run it through speaker cab due to noise rules. I also have Positive Grid Bias FX2/Amp on my Windows PC if I need more amp tones and fx but I rarely use it.

Straight up, no bs. Try the Bugera infinium. I find it to be an awesome in home jam amp. I'm not even a "good" player and I even sound good thru this amp

All of these lists are basically adverts. Haven't trusted them in years. Much better information from channels such as yours, when researching new gear. I got a Spark Mini on your recommendation, and love it! It's a great, fun practice amp that has a huge variety of effects and tone (especially with the Hendrix pack). I also have a Blackstar HT1-R MKII when I want some tube tones. Many thanks for the video.

I have a Yamaha THR5 which I bought second hand for about 120 euros. At that price I think it's brilliant. However I would never pay the full retail price for the THR30 as that is insane for a practice amp, even a good one.

I have been using a Boss GT-1 multi stomp as a budget line6 helix for years. I run it with headphones usually but have also used aux cable from headphone port to aux in on my home stereo. It also has audio-interface built in so you can record stuff. You can download patches to easily get certain sounds too. *Note that weirdly listening back through headphones when using as interface despite recording in stereo you hear it in mono.

I think the best thing anyone can do is what i do ..practice acoustically , dont even bother to buy a practice amp ...and i have played all my electric guitars without any amplifier for 15 years now .i no longer even own any amplifiers

Great Video Elmo. I found the Boss Katana 50 for 214 euro's and I am so happy with it. Great amp for great money. For every player the correct amp is a matter of preference. Next to this to compare a €79 amp to a €600+ amp does not make sence to me. Budget is always part of this. Cheers from the Netherlands.

I like the THR range and I think it produces a brilliant tone. But, I don't understand why wireless should an important thing for the THR 30, I don't need wireless for practicing. The more important thing for me would clearly be the line out. Which also isn't really important for a practice amp. I got an old Digitech RP360 and headphones, that's more than enough for practicing and already luxury to what I had in the early 90s (I had nothing ...). If I ever upgrade I'd get one of those little Boss Recording devices with built in guitar tones and metronome/drum computer.

The most important part of any amp is the speaker, put a small cheap speaker in one and no matter how good the electronics are it will sound terrible. With most practice amps this is where they save costs, yes you can upgrade the speaker but instead buy the best amp you can find saving the hassle of making a new speaker fit.

I own more or less only practice amps as I only play at home (I don´t have a band) and I need to play at low volume and I don´t have space for a 100w combo or a 4x12 speaker. I bought and resold many practice amps. I kept the Blackstar Fly 3 (also the bass version), the Roland Acoustic mobile and the Laney Mini Lion (the 6 watt version). I also have the Vox AmPlug in Clean, Classic Rock, Metal and Bass. I was disappointed by the Orange Crush Mini (awful speaker) and the Vox AC2. I am a Yamaha fan boy (I own 6 Yamaha´s guitars), but I also agree that 600 Euro for the THR is not a good deal.

Hi, For me the best practice amp is the Vox Adio Air GT. In contrast to the other Vox modeling amps, it has full-range speakers, which benefits its sound. Modeling without a full-range speaker is pointless! A few years ago it did won against the Yamaha in a comparison test at Andertons... Reason to buy: it's small you can use it with batteries A wide variety of sounds can be set ultra-quickly using physical switches/pots [no menus] 8 presets Additional amps can be selected via the app (e.g. 5150) and saved in a preset. Fantastic sounds Reasonable number of effects/amps built-in tuner fantastic stereo wide effect Bluetooth player Look suitable for living rooms Reason to avoid €300 is a lot for an amplifier that you can't rehearse with in the rehearsal room Greets from black forest in Germany

I own an Originalversion Blackstar ID Core Stereo 40 Watt Amp that i like very well.. sounds great for ots size .. the 20 Watt and 10 Watt versions are quite lacking for tonesby comparison.. mine has larger 6'5 in. speakers as the other two have 5 in speakers so lacing bass tones.. I also re-Amp mine through my surround receiver with the sub woofwr included so get more overall deeer sounds from the signal chain overall. plus the guitar has quad rail humbuckers in it powerful and deeper tones from the Stellarcaster i bui;t from a Starcaster Strat by Febser,, stripped and rebuilt overkill...lol 3 of the quad rail Humm's with Les Paul wiring ...500K push/pull audio taper Vol ciol splits on all 500K audio taper tome pots bypass sw for neck and bridge together regardless of the 5-way sel posision.. and a few other tricks...lol stars and planets custom airbrushed paont with clrar gloss...the Stellarcaster...

I love the Yamaha THRs and would choose no other practise amp for myself, but so agree with you. No way should the 30 be first, due to the price. Even I can’t justify buying the 30 (sticking with the 10) since it is so expensive.

Very cool, helpful, and insightful video. I just wanted to chime in as a beginner guitar player that I started with the Fender LT25 and moved to Boss Katana 50. The clean channel on the LT25 is awesome, but I found the effects and the preset system very frustrating to deal with. I definitely understand the limitations in terms of sound and effects quality at the price point, that wasn't my issue, it was more so making adjustments or being able to a/b/c effects. While the Boss Katana can be played much louder, I actually feel I'm able to control the volume with more precision than the LT25 and that presets and effects are much easier to manage. It definitely seemed counter-intuitive starting out, I thought the LT25 would be much more beginner friendly given all the presets it comes with combine with its size/weight, its power, and so forth, it just didn't work out that way to me. So anyone reading this that is a beginner it was pretty interesting (to me) how fast I went from "I'd rather not fiddle with a bunch of knobs" to "I want to use all the knobs!". Having a knob-heavy amp may look intimidating but you get use to playing with knobs really, really quickly... re-reading that sentence I realize the sub-text but please let the record show this comment is intended as text-text. Anyway, thanks for the heads up and product comparisons!

great thoughts, give viewers a lot of though. Last year I bought a lvl1 Blackstar 40 watt 2 x6 inch speakers for £60 UK, I think it is a good practice amp and you can jam with others, not a drummer. Yes for practice good only thing I do not like is the separate power supply. Best buy today is 2nd hand Mustang 3 with a pedal, 100 watts £100 pounds, most have never been used.

Elmo - Spider V mk. 2 has mostly positive reviews, ecspacially after mod (mk.2) and even Line 6 haters say it's become something else and interesting. Check it pls before you call it's sound shit. In the eighties the best practice amps had a least 10 inch speaker and a tube in the power section and maybe a headphone jack but that was oh so long ago.. I am a big fan of Roland amps. It has been amazing to see how miniaturization and technology has changed all kinds of things we use every day! I am saddened tho by these stunning amount of just garbage boxes that the music industry pumps out every year for folks to play thru. Keep up the good work!

Really interesting video, Buying your first amp or anything can be tricky as you dont really know what is good and what is right for you. Your list makes much more sense. And I think for a real home use practice amp you should go for a really low watt amp that still sounds good,. For my home practice (apartment) even a 10w solid state will never get even close to being cranked, and currently I am using a DSL1HR into a 2x12 V30 cab, and running it on 0.1w mode and still I rarely crank it in that mode so I dont really see the point of getting a middle ground wattage amp that still cant gig other than that usually bigger amps get better components and sound a bit better.

@@MrPolevaulter the 1wtt is simple. No reverb. 8" speaker and a drive boost. It's a good full sounding amp for 1 wtt. The 5wtt ampshave the reverb but cost $300-400 more. But each has a bit more than the other. I can absolutely say it is a great little amp.

This is one of my favorite reviews, especially as someone who used to obsess over gear. If the Boss Kitana had a Bluetooth option, I'd get it. Then again, there are Bluetooth adapters. For 600 Euros, which is worth 600 Dollars, I could get someone to play guitar for me, while I relax with a nice Macallan 15. 😂

It requires a lot of current if you want a firm grip on the heavy speaker magnet. 25W cannot provide that. Have also in mind that a standard 25W solid state amp provides less current than a 25W tube amp due to the electrical design. However, only you self can decide what kind of amp you need to get the performance you want.

I have more practice amps than I'd care to admit, some are just part of the collection, some are not my favourite. The one I use most is a Laney mini Supergroup stereo (non blue tooth version). 6 watts of solid state power, twin speakers, twin channel delay & master volume & it fits on your coffee table or shelf. It's not the greatest amp ever, but kills it for plug & play practice.

I reckon I bought a THR30II 18 months ago, it was cheaper, I had it new for 520€. You can get nice tones out of it, from cristal clear to blues, crunch or "modern" kinda metal. BUT you need the app on your smartphone to build the presets, without it there are some stuffs you can't do (as far as I know) if you want to chain effects or access to the compressor/limiter, noise gate...If you already have a relay G10TII in your gear you can use it with that amp. Also useable as an audio interface. It's a bit pricey if you don't need those features, but otherwise it seems like a good portable tool. Otherwise if you just need a nice clean tone and an acceptable "dirty" tone, the Fly3 is best bang for buck I guess.

Some amp makers and sellers really relly on the fact that guitar novices has no experience and would by any piece of sh** they produce.. For example: they present the "wireless" as a feature. 🤦 But for what purposes you need wireless for PRACTICE? To play sitting in the toilet? In 99.9% of situations you practising sitting in the front of the amp, close to it. And such noncence happens always when they make their products.

I hate commenting… but here goes. My 16yo has started playing guitar seriously… he has access to all my guitars ( not letting him use my pedals… not yet!). I’ve bought him a Katana mk2 100w Head! He can use it with headphones, and line in if he wants to play with music. Will order a 2x12 soon if he wants to start gigs! If in a couple of years he goes for a better amp, he has a cab, and still an amp to practice at home on. The Tone Studio opens up many amp models from the Roland and Boss catalog along with a ton of pedals. Just my 2 cents…

The list says the spark amp doesn't have enough bass. Have they even played the spark? There are entire videos dedicated to reducing the bass from the spark amp. Everything from changing speakers to stuffing socks in the housing. I got rid of mine because it was way too bass-y.

It's ironic for me as I usually think these kind of lists are always paid bulls****, but I do use a THR30ii and a Blackstar Fly 3 Charge religiously for teaching! I totally agree that the Yamaha stuff is way too much money for what it is (as there are only a few tones on it I would call superb), but it does a lot for me in other ways when i have to teach bass or record assessments as the audio quality when playing back music and backing tracks is hands down the best i've come across. Great video Elmo as you do raise some great alternatives that should be on that list! -Gabe

Don't judge the Spider V mark II by the mark I. BIG difference. I tried a number of the least expensive modeling amps and that one came out on top. The only thing I don't like is there is no effects loop, my Strymon reverb can't be used with the higher gain models.

I just looked around the interwebs for some Blackstart IDcode v3 reviews and one reviewer said that right out of the box the sound was... crap. It got better after playing the amp for 2-3 hrs, apparently the speaker just worn in a little bit, idk if that's a thing... (I know worn-in speakers are a thing after you play the amp for 5-6 years)
