In today's video I talk about the characteristics of lighting that you should look for when shopping for craft lighting. I also show the craft lighting that I use in my craft room, sewing room, and family room. I also review an audiobook that I recently finished listening to and talk about some cool stamps that I got at the post office last month.

I think that something worth mentioning about CFLs is that they can trigger migraines. The effects get worse the more CFLs you have. They do flicker, but at a much faster rate than the old fluorescent tubes we're used to, so most of us don't notice it. When you have multiple bulbs doing this, you have something called "phasing" that's basically a pulse that rolls across the lit area. Fluorescent lights also have a spike in the blue portion of the spectrum that can be visually fatiguing. I do recall that for a while when CFLs came out, they were touted as "not causing migraines" because they "don't flicker". This is absolutely untrue. The flicker may be unnoticeable to most of us, but it's definitely there. For most crafters, of course, this won't be terribly relevant. However, I do think it's worth mentioning (even if just in a comment) for those crafters with migraines or who live with people who get migraines. Thank you for a wonderful video. Now a lot of things my photographer husband has been babbling at me make just a bit more sense. ;-)

Great info. I use a bicycling headlamp for knitting, especially during the dark winter months. It's great because there are no shadows because the light is coming from your line of sight.

I do need improved lighting for my crafting. I try my best not to knit in the movie theatre, but you said it so matter-of-factly that I now feel like it needs to be a thing for me going forward. I truly appreciate the time you took to put this information together for us in one spot. Thank you!

Hello! I know a lot of people who knit in the movie theater. I wouldn't keep the light on all the time, only if I needed it for something. I can knit stockinette stitch pretty well in the dark, but nothing fancy. :) Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. XO

Thank you for your very informative information on lighting Dr. Kelly. I own several ottlites in my sewing room. I also have the small one you own as well with the huglight. I use all of them on a regular basis. I am very glad to know they are the right kind of lightning. I do most of my knitting at night.

Just added the entire Oxford Medieval Mysteries series to my Amazon wishlist. I love historical fiction! I have an Ottlite clone (found on Black Friday a couple of years ago) as a table lamp next to my favorite crafting chair in the living room. The living room can be pretty dim, especially in the evenings, so good strong lighting from that Ottline clone really helps when I want to crochet in the living room.

I'll join the others in thanking you for your research and sharing all that information! I have a bendable arm task light over my left shoulder where I sit to knit (l'm right handed I just checked the led bulb and it is rated only 2700K looks like I'll need to replace that), a track light over my sewing area and cutting fable (unfortunately it has halogen lights and produces an awful amount of heat,I do have plans to replace the bulbs with led lights ), upstairs I have one of the long armed Ottlights that I move between my two knitting machines. I also have a portable clip on light with two arms each having 2 led lights. Great information. It gives me something to think about.

Excellent summary on lighting, thanks for that, very useful. I make up sets of 'toy soldiers' (not always particularly warlike) to give away to less well off folks. I buy cheap unpainted figures and paint them up. The problem I am having at the moment (not at home, looking after Mum) is that desk lights cast very dark shadows, so I don't see when I have missed a bit when painting. Just ordered an LED anglepoise strip light, it is 14 inches long and bright, I also ordered a camera flash diffuser bag to try on the desk lamp (it's an LED so no heat issues). If those do not do the trick it's a photographers LED light box but those are expensive.

Hi! I just wanted to add that I have recently purchased the sunlight hands free portable light and that it is now rechargeable...it comes with a rechargeable lithium battery that last 6-8 hours, and a small USB cord to recharge. No need to unscrew anything, just plug it in. It works well for travel.

Thank you so much for this information! I've always thought that the wattage of the bulb is what makes it brighter. I find that the CFL bulbs are much yellower light than the old bulbs, so I am gradually replacing them with LED bulbs as they burn out and I use up my stockpile of bulbs. Now I know what to look for when I shop.

Improves dental health? I better turn on my full spectrum light more often. Color rendering and angling the light on my detailed work are the only benefits I looked for. The next time I'm shopping for lights I'll be purchasing by lumens. Very informative. Thank you for all of the research and time invested in Ewe University.

Very helpful information.. I have been using a full spectrum tube if light p, from Lowes.. I have two.. One is on a table, by my knitting/crocheting/reading corner of the couch, and the other is on my cutting table.. They cost a fool twenty bucks each, and have served me well.. However, Inam considering an Ott light.. My already poor vision has gotten worse, since my diagnosis of glaucoma.. I thunk the better light that Ott provides might be if real help to me..
@EweUniversity
@EweUniversity 7 лет назад
Hi Sandy! Yes, I find that I need a lot more light to work by the older I get. One thing I've done is just buy the Ottlite replacement bulbs. They are pricey but you can often get them 50% off at Joann. And you can put them in your existing lamps and not have to spend all the money on an Ottlite lamp. XO

Love your videos! You always explain things so clearly. Thank you! As to lighting, I have an Ottlight floor lamp with magnifier attachment (a replacement for one that finally died after many years, probably from bending the flexible neck too much), and an Ottlight table version that flips open, all of which I purchased at great price discounts. I am planning to buy another Ottlight, with magnifier and clip attachments, on sale of course!

you seem very intelligent my dear. and maybe you r right about the light and seasonal affective disorder but i wonder why would this affect the night shift people in regards to having the right type of lighting in night time if it isnt affecting the daytime moods sad. etc. i think they do help in my experience and i am a very skeptical person who does not believe easily in placebo. i think you do have to have enough lux in your lamp to make a difference to mood and sad. any lamp will not do . in my opinion
@EweUniversity
@EweUniversity 6 лет назад
Hi Barbara -- I did a whole segment on Seasonal Affective Disorder in an earlier video. Here is the link to that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k4oQhNCPIyk.html The SAD info is at the 5 min mark. Basically, it's the brightness of the light that matters, not that it must be full-spectrum. Hope this helps.
