Usually these days in the UK/Europe QRP is 5w or less CW and maybe 10w off the mic. Noway 20w is QRP, low power yes, QRP no.

Great video. It would be good to clarify a bit on the "short coax" recommendation however as for some antennas the coax is part of the antenna and as much as 50' (25' minimum) is recommended by the manufacturer.

I operated portable both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, made a DX contact and several other contacts and may have caught the bug to start a pota or sota soon. 73, thanks for the good content.

Good video with some great tips. Seems a touch more orientated towards the US viewers though as here in the UK our foundation licence differs to your tech licence in that we can use most of the HF bands but at max 10W, so all M3, M6 and M7 callsigns here are by default QRP. Many are not looking to go out P/SOTA but enjoy using this low power from home. Some do great from home even on SSB. Obviously more limited than the big gun stations, but it make a contact feel so much more special when made, especially when breaking into a pile up to one on another continent. Agree totally that good antennas are a major part of a good setup.

Congrats on your son's birthday. There should be a birthday and Josh going camping up north meme :-) Yes, I remember Sept 11th like it was yesterday. Westchester, NY. Someone walking in to my office and saying a plane flew into the world trade center and me going to CNN, back when CNN was CNN, assuming that it was a Cessna or something. Our work day was over quite rapidly after that and we were all sent home. I spent the day trying to make international call to my family and getting engaged tones.

KX2 can go up to 12 watts, weird, but it can. I thought that the ARRL defined QRP at 5 watts or less. I've never heard of 20 watts being the threshold, but good to know.

Josh, this video was exactly what I needed to decide on the type of equipment that I want and in what direction I want to follow in the world of Ham Radio. I want to learn Morse code and be mobile. qrp is 5 watts or less not 20 watts. anything over 5 watts is low power period..... for qrp you need the very best antenna you can come up with so a beam is the best if you can get one up... some times under the right conditions a vertical will work as good but has more noise and it may not work as well. you can turn most radios down to 5 watts so if you buy a 100 watt radio you can still do qrp. also 10 watts is considered qrp in ssb. have fun 73 N8WS

The morse code statements r not correct in my experience. You and others may think that a station not hearing you SSB will hear you 59+ CW is not correct. It's still susceptible to propagation/band conditions and is NOT the magic elixir to making a contact in marginal conditions. I've never seen you demo morse Josh.

Why not eliminate annoying, lame baby talk expressions like "play radio" and "can they antenna when you need them to antenna well" (44:25) from the ham lexicon? It doesn't make the speaker sound "hip", clever or "cool", only the opposite. Here is a revolutionary thought........... we could all go back to using nouns as nouns and verbs as verbs.
