I really like Kate Stewart. In spite of the flaws you mentioned. I like how she FEELS like a Lethbridge-Stewart. She (and the show by extension) doesn't just say she is. You watch how she speaks, and her body language, and you just go, "yep... that's the Brig's daughter." I think that's more a testament to Jemma Redgrave's acting (I mean, she's a freakin' Redgrave), but my point stands

On the point about Osgood and whether the one who died was Human or Zygon, I think the point is that no one knows the answer. There's no way of knowing and yeah, you can say it needs to be one Human and one Zygon for the truce to work, but ultimately it still works because no one knows if that's the case or not. All we know it's it's either one Human, one Zygon or it's two Zygons. But, we simply don't know which. Hell, I doubt that the Zygon who became the other Osgood at the end (I forget her name) even knows.
@christopheralthouse6378
@christopheralthouse6378 6 лет назад
NPCarlsson One fatal flaw in that theory... The human must remain alive for the Zygon duplicate to retain its form... Therefore, it HAD to have been the Zygon who died, otherwise, the Zygon duplicate of Osgood would've lost that form and thus, no more Osgood PERIOD... (Ref. "Terror of the Zygons")
@muklowd
@muklowd 6 лет назад
Yeah that's my take on it as well... and you don't even have to go as far back at TotZ ... just go back to the first part of the Clara and the Zygons story and you see that they still had to keep the subject alive to duplicate their memories
@ryel.7022
@ryel.7022 6 лет назад
wait the doctor himself had said that the 2 had merged so well that even if the human had died then the other would be able to maintain her form, also she said it herself it does not goddamn matter one died that was the point and that was one of many sparks for the zygon uprise
@NPCarlsson
@NPCarlsson 6 лет назад
Christopher Althouse But, they explained that in The Zygon Invasion that they no longer need to keep the human counterpart alive. I'd link a clip if I could find one, but The Doctor comes to that conclusion as well and says to Osgood that she must be the human. But, Osgood explains that Zygons only need to keep the humans alive if they need more information from them. That's why the Zygon Clara was threatening to kill real Clara if she didn't tell her the truth.
@cryofpaine
@cryofpaine 6 лет назад
Exactly. The reason why Osgood was chosen to be the caretaker of the box was because there wasn't that differentiation between them. There wasn't a "Human Osgood" and a "Zygon Osgood", there was just Osgood. The two of them figured out back during the 50th anniversary which was which, thanks to the inhaler, and they decided it didn't matter, They moved past that distinction, which is why the doctor trusted them with that secret.

Her being the only immortal alive is very convenient for the story. Even Jack, who was made immortal by the dangerous in the tardis dies eventually as the face in the story. The "traditional" (Old Who) definition of a companion would have excluded Vincent anyway since he only traveled within the span of a single story. He's sort of like Sara Kingdom who traveled with the doctor to multiple locations in one story but who didn't stay after that. (Well, couldn't stay in her case.) But companion rules are nutty and everyone has their own. Liz Shaw, River Song, the Brigadier, and others are all borderline in weird ways that it's hard to come up with a perfect rule that doesn't allow or disallow too many characters. It's all in fun!
@julieeverett7442

liz and the brig were mainly in the3rd doctors era, and he was stuck on earth for 3 of his 5 years, so earth bound companions count, and the brig and sgt benton HAS travelled in the TARDIS (more than once actually) so they are definately companions

I LOVED The Lodger and Closing Time and a lot of that had to do with Craig. He's such a genuine character and a nice foil to the weirdness going on around him - like, he does his little double-take and then he just kind of straps in to help. I love his sincerity - I think James Corden played him extremely well and gave him a lot of that sincerity. I'm glad to see him on this list at all, even if he is pretty far down. I absolutely _loved_ Kate in series 9! I can't really put my finger on it as to why, I just loved her take-charge attitude and, yeah, she put herself in a bit of a stupid situation going to New Mexico basically by herself but the fact that she came out of that, solved that problem and drew her own conclusion as to the solution for the entire Zygon issue (even though it was the wrong one)...I don't know, she came off as just a total badass and I loved her for it. Your headcanon about "Which Osgood lived" is accepted. Thank you. I'm going to say - I don't really like the way Danny treated Clara (basically forcing her to choose between her friend and him, that's pretty awful boyfriend-ing), but I love him despite that. I adore Jenny. She's smarter than she seems, she's feisty, she's *adorable* (I love her voice) - just everything about her is absolutely wonderful. The biggest things I loved about Harriet Jones (Former Prime Minister) were her level-headedness, her integrity, and her humbleness. Her sacrifice was just the best ending for her character. The fact that she introduced herself to the Daleks - the _Daleks!_ - and they KNEW WHO SHE WAS...God, that was satisfying.

I haven't watched episodes series 8 and 9 in a long time because I don't particularly like Danny or Clara but unless I'm missing something I remember thinking Danny was reasonable about her travelling with the Doctor? From what we see her tell him about, he knew that she regularly put her life at risk, was very devoted to the Doctor who was regularly putting her in situations that put her life at risk, and at that point he even says he understands but to let him know if things ever got to be too much. She does and is very upset after Kill the Moon and tells him the Doctor went way too far and she doesn't want to travel with him anymore and he expresses that he's glad she's calling it quits and not staying when the Doctor pushes her buttons, then she proceeds to lie to him about still travelling with the Doctor, and he's upset when he finds out because she's staying with someone she told him she didn't want to be with anymore. Then, in series 9, I feel like they built off of the unhealthy attachment she had to the Doctor and mixed it with her recklessness after losing Danny to make her trying to be the Doctor and risking her life all the time, which I think shows that Danny had the right idea. You have to consider him from the angle of someone that cares about Clara and personally knows her, not someone on the outside looking in who knows the Doctor as well as we do. I don't think he was any more manipulative or demanding than Rose's mom in early series 1 when she was going "can you tell me my daughter will be safe with you!?" The only difference is Clara was more indecisive and secretive than Rose was. Hopefully I'm remembering everything that happened correctly and props if you read all this, you just made me think pretty hard with the forceful boyfriend Danny comment lol

To me, I liked the sort of ambiguity of Osgood's ending, how even if the real Osgood died it didn't matter since they (at that point) represented being neither human or Osgood, they were a symbol of peace between them. I really felt like Harriet Jones was just a normal, every day woman with only her common sense and hard work behind her. She wasn't special or glamorous, she was just a very down to Earth person who found herself thrust into these situations and had to make those massively powerful decisions that none of us would want to make. I like how normal she was, yet so brave and resourceful and like you said - willing to do anything for the actual greater good. One thing you may not know is Osgood is also a nod to classic fandom. In 'The Daemons' - one of Pertwee's stories - the Doctor is trapped inside a heat barrier and has to work with the Brigadier's technical fella to create a device to get through. Sergeant Osgood. I very much doubt the name is a co-incidence.

When looking at the classic series, there are just fewer to pick from since outside of the UNIT era, The Doctor didn't re-encounter that many characters. There was Professor Travers, the Alpha Centauri Ambassador from the two Peladon episodes, and Sabalom Glitz that I can think of off hand. The "never traveled in the TARDIS" criteria can get a little dicey. In The Three Doctors, Benton and the Brigadier were in the TARDIS when it got sucked into the anti-matter universe. It wasn't under its own power, but they technically traveled in the TARDIS. Brigadier also traveled in Mawdryn Undead (without The Doctor) and at the end of The Five Doctors (timey wimey at best). For Liz Shaw, I consider her a companion because she did all the companion things moreso than the military regulars from UNIT. She didn't travel in the TARDIS only because she couldn't.

Re Jenny: Ever since the first doctor and Katarina, the show's writers have struggled to integrate companions from history or from other retrograde societies. Their only real success has been Jamie, mainly by giving him plenty of warrior stuff to do. I'm guessing writers consider the rewards too small to justify the challenge. I've never tried writing a Doctor Who story so I can't imagine how difficult a challenge that is. What I do know is Louise Jameson (Leela) quit the job because the writers side stepped that challenge.

I personally DESPISE Ashildr/Me and would put her in a list of the WORST characters to ever appear on the show, even excluding Hell Bent. Its mainly due to one line in In The Woman who lived, when asked why she didn't use the immortality capsule on anyone, what was her response? "No one's good enough." even though we later find out that includes HER OWN CHILDREN! If she'd said "why would I inflict immortality on anyone else" or something along those lines that would of been reasonable and made sense but she didn't she said "No one's good enough." making her come across as completely callous! Even after seemingly learning her lesson by the end she switches right back to being an awful person in Face the Raven. It might of worked if she was meant to be a villain but I don't think that was what Moffat was going for.

BladeOfFlames Productions My bad on the spelling corrected it now. It was more the callous way she came across if she'd given the reason that she considered immortality a curse she didn't want to inflict on anyone else I'd have no issue but she just said "No one was good enough".

Also, the alien tech square that made Ashildr immortal stops the aging process unlike Captain Jack's immortality. If I'm remembering correctly, we see a scene of her crying over what appears to be babies. If she had given one of her children immortality before they grew up they would be eternal babies. Even if she was planning on giving one immortality, the plague took them away before she had the chance.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I would love to see the Doctor's Daughter, Jenny, come back, at least for one episode. It's something I've wanted for a long time, and I think she would be great to introduce for another one-off story with 13. One recurrence.

I... think the reason Kate took such a hit in the zygon episodes was partially due to Clara. In order to beef up Clara's intelligence and importance in the episodes, she made a lot of deductions and performed actions that Kate was easily capable of performing herself and would have, had Clara not been the centre of attention. I'm really hoping the UNIT gang make a reappearance in S11 because I love them in the BF audios and they deserve more onscreen character time (bonus points if Josh and Sam make an appearance).

I liked danny pink. He was an interesting foil to the doctor. I didn't like clara with capaldi. She got on my nerves. I wish she had left and danny had become a companion. I always thought that the doctor was projecting his own self hatred onto danny in regards to his participation in the time war. In a good man goes to war, that one girl says in the language of her people, the doctor is translated as warrior. This is especially seen in him asking himself if he was a good man. Danny, i think, reminded him too much of himself, so it was easier for him to be mean to him. I wonder if he didn't understand why someone would choose to become a soldier. I don't think the doctor had a choice in the time war (at least pre 50th timeline). It was either let the time war go on and destroy the universe or use the moment.

I do like Strax but yes in the modern series the Sontarans are for sure watered down and less scary, which I miss. But what I love is the sarah jane adventures episode where she finds a sontaran ship and she is downright terrified seeing it again, she knows that she, with this ragtag team of kids are way out of the depth and she cannot handle this alone, that's how much of a threat they are. It was like watching the sontaran experiment cliffhanger where they are finally revealed again.

Regarding the Osgood thing, the whole point in the two-Osgoods dynamic is that it's ambiguous to everyone except themselves as to which one is human. Therefore, after one of them died it would make sense for the other to not reveal whether she's human or zygon. In which case, the decision for the replacement doesn't consider the species of the current Osgood a factor. I guess it would be pushing it if they always replaced one of them with a Zygon and never a human though.
@muklowd
@muklowd 6 лет назад
I always assumed it was the Zygon who died because otherwise who is Zygella going to copy? Can a Zygon copy a Zygon copy of a Human? Seems a bit of a stretch given how the Zygons had to keep the human alive in order to be able to mimic them accurately earlier in the two parter.
