I share a little bit on the settings I use for my Rode Videomic Pro and T3i for the best audio. I have a Bachelors of Science in Sound Recording Technology and feel more at home with audio than video sometimes.
Here's the info shared in the video:
Quiet environments:
+20db mic setting
1 notch from the left on mic level record settings
Moderate to loud environments:
0db mic setting
≤ 25% mic level record settings
Environments with lots of shifts in sounds (if you're OK with some hiss)
0db mic setting
AUTO mic level setting

Great Advice! We always had issues with clipping on the +20db boost with the manual setting set to 2-3 tics from the left. Our kids tend to be super loud in the videos and we didn't want them to quiet down. By changing the setting on the rode to 0 and adjusting the in camera setting to 25%, that completely solved the issue. Thanks again for this awesome advice!
@gibsonedu
@gibsonedu 7 лет назад
Awesome! Yeah I work with young kids a lot. I've just decided to go with 0db on the mic and Auto on the camera in those settings. It was clipping even when I was doing 0db on the mic and 25% on the camera.

Thanks Thom - excellent explanation, especially for shooting in loud environments. I teach drivers how to pass a road test and be smarter, so I'm most often shooting with traffic in the background. I'm going to give that a try and see if the audio improves. Thanks again for the video - all the best, Cheers Rick
@gibsonedu
@gibsonedu 4 года назад
Yeah in that context, I’d go with the mic set to 0db and the camera set to auto so the volume lowers automatically as cars drive by but then comes back up when it’s not as loud. Happy filming!

Best review of this mic - clear concise and understandable. Really helped me! Also that last part about pulling it back to 0 in moderate environments was key, I had kept my settings at one notch and +20 for a long time and the audio sounded terrible!

Yeah, it took a few videos where I had insanely clipped audio to realize that going 'auto' in certain contexts was the way to go.

I remember watching your video last year in prep for doing a school play, and I thought "boy, that makes perfect sense to set it 25% at 0db!!" and implemented that on my first night of shooting. This year comes around, and I fell back into my old ways of 2db at one notch on the camera... not catastrophic, but ya... wish I would have gone with 25 at 1. A word of wisdom for all you guys and gals getting into shooting school plays. The audio is SOOOO much fun to work with!!
@gibsonedu
@gibsonedu 5 лет назад
I agree; audio is great (I have a Bachelors of Science in Audio Engineering). Glad this vid was helpful. I typically just keep the mic on 0db and camera on Auto now whenever I'm in any context outside of a quiet room.

Some nice advice there my friend. I just bought a Canon T3i as my first DSLR and the Rode Pro mic just like you. It's mainly for my RU-vid channel and general video work. This vid you made was really helpful. Peace dude! Big thumbs up. :)
