Picking the best salt system is very tricky. I like a lot of them from the Jandy TruClear to the Circupool RJ Series. THE CMP (owned by Jandy now) is great! The Ichlor is not bad either and Pentair seems to have fixed all of the initial issues.
I default to what is best for your pool rather than push a brand. If you have a pool of 30,000-40,000 gallons the Circupool RJ Series or the CMP and even the IntelChlor IC60 would be good choices. But if you have a pool of 20,000 gallons or less the Jandy TruClear would be a great fit.
Of course, I am all for making things easy so if you have a Pentair Intelichlor cell and want to upgrade, the iChlor would be easy and fit in the same spot without any replumbing needed. You can even use the same power unit or if it is attached to automation you can just purchase the cell only (with the special retrofit union). If you have a Jandy Aqaupure cell you can purchase the TruClear with the unions and it will fit right in the same area that your old cell came out of. You will need the new power unit however so it is not exactly plug-and-play like the Pentair iChlor.
I like the Jandy TruClear because it is affordable and more importantly the replacement cell is under $500. It also has a nice clear plastic top that will allow you to see if the cell plates have calcium buildup and you can also check to see if chlorine is being produced by the way of bubbles bouncing around the top of the clear window. It does not have a salinity meter which means you will have to purchase a digital salt meter. Not a major drawback.
You don't save any money when you convert to a salt pool. It cost a lot more than using Chlorine or Bleach in your pool. Factor in the cost of the unit plus installation, say $1,500, and then a new salt cell every 3-5 years at $500, and the salt to start at $150 and you’re looking at over $2,000 for the first 5 years. And this is a low estimate in some regards. You would have to spend over $400 a year on chlorine to match that number. Typically, you are not spending over $100-$200 a season for your chlorine.
I am pretty honest about the true benefit of a saltwater system, the fact that it adds chlorine to the pool without you having to do anything. This means no more trips to the pool store for shock or liquid chlorine. It is a great time saver for sure. But for me, that is the only benefit.
With that said, a saltwater system is a preference. And if you can absorb the cost of the system and don't mind the extra overall cost of a salt pool, then it is the way to go. I mean who wants to add tablets and liquid chlorine or shock every week to their pool? With a Saltwater Generator connected to your pool equipment, you can set it and forget it. Of course, there is some maintenance required like cleaning the salt cell, making sure the salt level is good, and setting the output to the correct setting to chlorinate your pool, but for the most part, it is much easier than trying to maintain a steady chlorine reading during the season by manually adding chlorine to the pool.

Considering converting my 10K pool over to reduce maintenance. I live in South Florida and go through a ton of chlorine in the warmer months, so I'm reading up on all of these saltwater systems. It seems like none of these systems (including ones you haven't reviewed here) are really great or reliable. Why is it such a struggle for these companies to produce something reliable and for a long time? Other pool equipment from makers like Hayward and Jandy can last a VERY long time. I don't want to buy something that lasts for a year. Seems absurd.

It's really a matter of the salt cell is a consumable product. The plates just wear out.

Chlorine went up again over the winter and I am now paying $143 per box of 12 bags of shock and something like $175 for 35lbs of tabs. I am beginning to think Salt is no more expensive than Chlorine. Yes it would be a big amount up front but I just dropped $400 for a bucket of tabs and box of shock that will not last the season. What do you think with the current prices?

Just be honest, how many times you replaced faulty iChlor cells because of unit goes completely dead (no display, no lights) within few months? I got my first unit in 2018 and it lasted for 3 years which I consider OK. But then last year I got it replaced 3 times, it lasts for few months and goes blank or just displays "COLD". The second replacement popped with smoke tinting front control panel with burn marks. And if you bought it from Amazon - good luck getting it replaced.

Pentair has their run of bad cells for sure. The TruClear is clearly much more reliable.

I have a new pool build and I have the Jandy aquapure PLC1400 inline that connects right to my aqualink control panel. How is it different than the Trueclear?

I am adding a new jandy vs pump and want to add a saltwater system as well. I was leaning towards the AquaPure system but I just listened to this podcast (btw, thank you, so helpful). I have a 24 gallon in ground pool. Thoughts on which I should go with and comparison. Thanks so much.

The Truclear would still be better, however you would have to run it near 100% output. It's just a more reliable system.

I am going to go with the salt system and I am looking at the Jandy Tru Clear and a couple others. Can I install the Tru Clear cell inline on 1 1/2 inch plumbing? My pool has 1 1/2 inch throughout. Also I have a 26k gallon. Can the Tru Clear keep up being that it is for 35k? Thanks for any info you can share.

You can on both questions. Figure running the cell at 100% all the time.

Hey I bought the truclear retrofit but the unions aren’t even compatible with my old aquapure. How do I get male threads to fit the old aquapure unions? I search online and can only find the union nut. And I don’t see male threads on Jandys catalog

Maybe give Jandy a call because it should fit just fine.

Why no mention of any Hayward systems? Considering they're one of the big 3? Also that Circupool 7 year warranty sounds good, however its only 1 year free parts replacement, and then just pro rated at 80% cost and then 60% cost for the remainder of the warranty.

I am not a fan of those.

@@SPL Which, the Hayward or the Circupool?
@HAULUUZ
@HAULUUZ 2 месяца назад
Not true. “The CircuPool RJ Plus Series of Salt Chlorinators is covered by a seven-year limited warranty from the purchase date. This warranty covers parts and operates on a prorated system: Year 1 is 100%, Year 2 is 80%, Year 3 is 60%, Year 4 is 40%, and Years 5 through 7 have 20% coverage.”

@BigBear-- 2 месяца назад
@@HAULUUZ Yeah that's basically what I said, I just had the %'s backwards for some reason. I think I was referring to simplified chart or version that didn't include the full prorated schedule, I saw somewhere. I just knew it wasn't 100% coverage for the entire 7 years. You're right of course, that is the full breakdown.

Pentair locks you in due to the automation and ability to use the phone app to check and adjust the salt and generation level. Its like their led pool lights. Proprietary and they sue the pants off anyone trying to make a compatible unit. Also, to get a warranty they only give you one if it was installed by "a professional". Never again

That's how they keep everything Tan back there...
