Used for many different things such as DSMB or SMB lines, Distance lines, Searching, Anchorage etc.Some easier to use, some more likely to fail, a few ideas to think about before you buy your first Reel of Spool for Scuba Diving.How to guide for the new or inexperienced diver.

Wow, making sure the line is tied to the spool at the end is such an obvious, simple tip , yet would be so easy to overlook.

I've got a couple of Apeks spools. You need about 1.5x as much line as your deployment depth. If you're deploying your dSMB from 20 meters, you need 30 meters of line on your spool. This is because the dSMB doesn't shoot up straight when there's a current, and you want it to be able to reach the surface. If you're buying a cheap, overwound 30m spool, keep in mind that you'll likely have to remove 10-15m of line to make the spool usable. That will turn your 30m spool into a 15-20m spool. I have a compact 15m spool for deploying from my safety stop. This is enough for recreational open water. I have a 30m Halo spool for cold water diving, which is good down to 20m. And I have a 60m spool for S&R, jump lines, and deploying from 40m. I carry a maximum of 2 spools on a dive, depending on the situation.

Having worked/instructed in diving for years I always disliked the ratchet reels, overpriced and clunky. I believe best train your student diver to use the best tools from the start, it builds great confidence and the spool is an all rounder for doing multiple tasks, Great video and content Andy.

Thanks mate and yeah I agree but understand why some favour the comfort of some equipment over others. I prefer the train hard fight easy approach. Thanks for watching

Thansk fro explaining but can you explain what the difference is between a finger spool and a spool? They look the same but with one finger is mentioned and the other looks similar it is not. Wuld be great help in my buying process 😁

Essentially they’re the same mate, one just has a massive hole in the middle 👍🏼

I made the 'ratchet mistake' when I was a beginner. Bought one because it was cheap and looked cool. Nearly dragged me to the surface when I deployed the DSMB and couldn't work the mechanism. So I feel they're not fit for beginners. Too much going on when you're at a level that releasing a DSMB is still a demanding task.

I completely agree, and only use the spool now and when I’m teaching too

Very interesting take... when I dive off boats, the boats hand us a flag (SMB) which we'll use to denote where the buddy pair or group of buddies are. The preference is always a high-end reel as it's easier to deploy and use it. Why would someone fiddle with a finger spool when you can have a nice, large spool? My finger spool and DSMB are attached to my BPW and aren't really used in these rec boat dives, but I keep it for safety. What am I missing? Seems things are taught differently in Europe or something?

Yeah it seems that way mate

For an SMB, or a float, a finger spool doesn't work. You'll need a reel with a handle you can hold on to. But for deploying a dSMB from depth, a finger spool is the way to go.

This might sound ridiculous I’m aware of that but I’m going for it anyway... is it one spool to rule them all for example a long spool to penetrate a wreck/cave and then that same spool can deploy dsmb? Or is it two spools for two jobs?
@AndytheNorthernDiver
@AndytheNorthernDiver 4 года назад
I have a 60m cave reel for penetrating and a 40m spool for dsmb and a few smaller for all sorts of jobs. I’d say personal budget and needs should rule as well as safety being paramount
@fadi9340
@fadi9340 4 года назад
Andy the Northern Diver cheers Andy but could the long spool also deploy the dsmb on one dive or is that not how it goes?
@AndytheNorthernDiver

Absolutely mate, as long as you can master it’s use for all occasions do whatever you want as long as it’s safe who cares what you do

For line laying you'd generally use a cave reel. The benefit is that you can just hold it by the handle, and drag the line behind you. A finger spool is less practical in that sense. You can also keep the line taut while laying the line by putting a little pressure on the reel. A ratchet reel is designed more for pulling a float (or SMB), or deploying a dSMB in cold water, where you don't have much dexterity in your fingers. The "danger" here is that you accidentally re-engage the ratchet, and it pulls you to the surface in an uncontrolled ascent. A spool is designed for deploying a dSMB from depth. The hole in the center allows you to apply a pinch grip and control the spool while the dSMB shoots to the surface. The holes in the sides are for threading the line through when stored so it doesn't unspool.

Did you have any issues with sharp edges of the holes in the side of your finger spool? The two I just got were able to cut the line.

no mate not yet at least, maybe file / sand them down and keep it in your dry suit pocket

What happens when i drop the reel because my fingers are too cold.....40 metres of line to wind in whereas a ratchet reel it is no line to get tangled in and wind in
@AndytheNorthernDiver
@AndytheNorthernDiver Год назад
Same as what happens when you drop the ratchet when your hands are too cold, you have another hand on it….. Better still wear the correct protection in cold water and in theory you wouldn’t be too cold. Generally divers that use spools are doing the type of diving that requires them to use spools, were ratchets are too cumbersome and have possible failure points that would be detrimental to the dive. They’d also be likely to carry more than one so again a ratchet would be the wrong choice again. I’m not saying ratchets are bad or wrong, but every bit of kit has its place, some can be multi use, others are preferable.

Grab the line and clip a bolt snap onto it. Let the bolt snap sink while you guide the line through your fingers. Eventually the spool will be back in your hand, and you can start reeling in the line. Once the line is on the spool again, use the bolt snap to wind the rest of the line back onto the spool while you ascend. If you find you lack the dexterity to use a spool in cold water, use a ratchet reel instead. The lack of dexterity may come not only from cold fingers, but also from thick gloves. You can't really feel what you're doing when there's 7mm of neoprene between your fingers and the spool.
