I really appreciate that you print the names of the crops on the screen because I am hearing impaired and have difficulty making out terms I'm not familiar with. I wish all RU-vidrs would do that. Thank you.
T Mattler Yes!! And it helps for me too. I’m not hearing impaired, but I forget the name if I just hear it. I just pause the video and can go straight to the website without forgetting what I’m doing.
Region would be good info. But winter hardiness doesn't indicate first frost. I can grow perennials like mad since it doesn't really get very cold. But first frost is sometimes in October.imzone 8b but I know southern gatrdens in zone 7 with longer growing season
I would not be mad if you turned this into a series and made one for each month! I did not know I could plant peas in September. I am new to gardening and have never been able to be successful at growing peas (mainly because I didn’t know they were a cool weather crop). I wasted all my Tom Thumb peas earlier this season so I didn’t have any. Then I remembered I had some cheap seeds left over from the first year I tried gardening 3 years ago before I learned about heirloom seeds. I managed to find 10 pea seeds in the drawer and I’m going to give them a go. I’m sure they won’t do great, but I’ll be happy if I at least get one pea. We will see, I’m feeling hopeful!
I am SO GLAD you have gotten into Chinese vegetables starting with my absolute favorite green vegetable by "far" Yhod Fah, what a surprise to open up to your vlog & see you have a plethora of Chinese produce seeds! Folks you will be won over by this delicious, fast cooking veggie, trust me! I have been going from Brooklyn to Manhattan's Chinatown to get my Chinese vegetables for years. I even suggested to one of the Homesteaders l follow on YT who sells to restaurants, telling him he would get a lot of attention by bringing them a super delicious treat that will amaze their customers & increase his reputation!
I’ve heard Jess recommend you guys so much. What I like about her channel is there is a ton of information coming at me just from experience where sometimes I have to pause so I can take notes. That’s exactly what I like here. No filler, just content.
I love the Red Giant Mustard! Had no idea I could plant it in September also. I think I am going to order some Tatsoi. I have never tried it but like the fact that it is low growing, cold hardy, and nutrient dense.
That's great, I wish her the best of luck. Florida gardening is not what most people think it is. She will need are planting schedule it can be found online at the university of Florida website .
I so wish "cool temperatures" applied to where I live. Our night time lows in Sept are in the 70s. October too. It's still breaking into the high 90s in the daytime. Zone 9 here. We get a 3 month pansy window.. Dec, Jan n Feb.. sometimes half of Feb.
These have been the best garden videos I have watched. I live in Missouri, too, so the timing is perfect. Sell in packages and I would try them all. It would be so easy just to click on it and purchase all of them. Please continue these all year.
Dana Malcova sugar snap is my favorite ( sugar sprint germinates quickly ) and the ones that are grown primarily for the tendrils, such as Sugar Magnolia look extra fancy 😀
You guys should make region specific videos. I live in Arizona its September 2nd and the high is still 106f. We don’t usually get frosts until late December and winters are very mild comparatively.
This is so very helpful when you discuss specific crops/seeds. You have a ton of seeds on your site and I get intimidated and overwhelmed by the choices. Most are plants I have never even heard off. Thank you! Now I can order some winter crop seeds and know exactly how to grow them. Awesome 😎
If you live in growing zones 4 or 5, you will need cold frames or a green house to plant in September. I wished our growing season was much longer.....
1. Chinese Kale Yhod Fah 2. Tatsoi 3. Turnip (Hidalgo Beni) 4. Chives 5. Japanese Giant Red Mustard 6. Purple Lady Bok Choi 7. Scarlet Kale 8. Peas (Oregon Sugar Pod II) 9. Chinese Cabbage (Hilton) 10. Spinach (Bloomsdale Long Standing) 11. Yellow Heart Winter Choy 12. Mizuna 13. Endive 14. Swiss Giant Pansy
Dank je wel, (Thank you in Dutch). Will be using your tips for my winter garden here near Amsterdam. I live on the 9th floor and have a terrace garden. The pansies are a Dutch staple. I love them on my endive salads. Great video.
@@RareSeedsBC and you for the videos. I have mini bokchoys ready to harvest and 4 kinds of kale. I love growing my own and your channel just makes it amazing.
So many greens! It's probably worth mentioning that September is ideal for winter grains (wheat, rye, barley) in cooler areas if you can set aside the space into summer and have an interest in trying them. Naturally check with your local extension service for the best time to plant--where I live it's even later than September.
My radishes and Purple Lady Bok Choy got replanted yesterday (8/29). Today, I am clearing out the last of the moribund Frog Island Nation Fava plants to make room for Sugar Pea Pod II -- most likely getting those planted tomorrow. Shannie, Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! You are helping a lot of gardeners be more productive in their gardens. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA. 8/30/2019
i love that you said 'healthful' instead of 'healthy'. :) anyway... very handy list of great crops to try. It's a bit late now at the end of September, but I'm going to try anyway. Thanks for the inspiration, and hope, on this dreary rainy autumn day. I'll definitely be checking out your other videos. Thanks!
I really love these videos. My wishlist keeps on growing! I've got the giant red mustard and I've been dying to plant it. So excited that it's finally time! Beni Houshi mizuna is one of my absolute favorites to grow and eat. So delicious and beautiful.
Oy it's 110 in CA and I'm hoping it'll cool off so we can put our cooler weather crops out. I took your advice from another video and am taking advantage of the hot weather to *hopefully* get some late season corn and watermelon before it cools off too drastically. Unfortunately there isn't much that likes the 100s lol
two weeks ago i put in italian broc, purple carrots, sage and dill. i am thinking of putting in red leaf lettuce. it didnt do well this past spring though.
Thanks for the wonderful info! I'm kinda new to gardening and this was helpful to know what to plant for September. I have already planted Arugela, Spinach, Peas, Cilantro, and some Zinnias. I want to plant more! Most of my seeds are from Rareseeds Thanks, Judy & Ed ( Arkansas)
Well....I'm here cus my zucchini plant ...(that had flowers...already and it was doing really good) ripped off buy a dog....I think and my radish also and my melons died from cold....so here I am cus I have alot of seeds and I'm looking for inspiration again...I really hope this works and I really hope I can actually get some fruit and veggies out of my garden but...I still have a little hope cus in the house we moved out of...under the bed I found a onion with a leaf and its growing happily in my garden! So I'm having hope for my little onion ...but as of no i decided to put everything in pots...even tho its gonna cost alot of soil...but it's worth It 😊
This is very inspirational. Thanks! However as a new gardener, when you say "plant" in Sep. Is this meant literally or can we also seed these plants in Sep?
This is why it is so important to do some research to find out your average First Frost Date. Many seeds need warm soil and a long germination time to get going, others don't. Seed packs can be of help but so are your local schools and government agricultural agencies.
Soil has cooled off :D Not for me. It's still in the 90's here and no rain in weeks. Average first frost isn't until 1st week of November. Should I be looking at your list from August to plant now?
I think 19th Sep is too late for 5b; mid to late august would be ideal. Wish the video was relative number of days to first frost or first hard freeze date in the region, rather than a whole September 30-day window. for 5b, garlic is ideal to plant in mid-September that would establish below ground over the fall and winter. Let me know if you are aware of any other vegetables in your region that do well in mid-Sep planting.
Thanks....great suggestions...Please tell me what zone you are in??? I am in zone 5 & wondering if I can plant these foods here in September...(raised beds) I have no greenhouse.
This info is ideal for zones 5-9, outside of that you will want to adjust your timing, planting a little early or late. You can find these seeds on our website right here -> www.rareseeds.com/
Hi there, thanks so much for the question. Please tell us more about your location (hardiness zone, climate etc.) and we'll do our best to give you some ideas!

We order it online i believe, but most large garden stores should carry a neem product, if not the extract then the oil, it should have instructions but it is usually 1-2 tablespoons per gallon of water, adding some natural or insecticidal soap often helps it be more effective.
Thanks for all the info! I planted one of your radicchios early on and then moved them out in early spring but they’re all leaves. Will they mature into a head eventually?
I ordered Tom Thumb this year & saved to plant for this Fall's harvest. I've sowed it twice now according to the directions on the seed pkt & it just won't germinate. Don't know if I got a dud pkt of seeds or I should try again but surface sow this this time? (Another mini lettuce I planted right next to it came up fine.)
greetings, it may be a dud packet, if you send us a message on social media or an email at seeds@raresseds.com with your order details, we can refund or replace it for you!
At 10:18, there are beautiful flowers behind Shany in front of Nelly's restaurant, but it's so far away I can't see what they are. Could you post that for us, please?
do you know your grow zone? checking online it says Alberta Canada ranges from zones 0- 5. If you dont know your grow zone can you get more specific on location?
