Duration Matte, and sometimes Satin, are my go-to paints 80% of the time when I paint walls. Really great coverage, durability and ease of application. Very little splatter. Customers are always happy to pay more for such a great product.

Nice review. I use Duration satin myself. It is great if you have decent walls with little or no detectable imperfections, otherwise matte (or egshell) is good too. I've also used the Emerald line and like it, mainly because it does come in egshell and I use in on my tongue and grove ceilings. Both covered well even when the cut edge started to dry before I got to that section. I'm always amazed that people will buy the cheapest paint they can get and wonder why it turns out bad. You tend to get what you pay for.

We built a garage suite over this past year and based on one of your earlier videos we went with Duration in the upper apartment and garage for all of the walls and trim. It is is an awesome paint. I painted all day and rarely had paint on me at the end of the day. We went with Satin on the trim instead of Semi-Gloss. I like the look but not the touch as much - not quite as smooth and seems less durable but time will tell. The only picture framing was when I discovered that one of the stores mixed a second can of a darker color with a Deep Base instead of an Ultra Deep Base and did not tell me. I found out too late. :-( Used 200 on the ceilings (except bathroom which was also Duration based on your recommendation) and PVA primer. Primer + 2 coats everywhere on new walls and they look great! Thanks for your recommendations - we are very happy with the results! As an aside I tried Emerald on my garage shelving as a comparison and it seems much better and more durable. If I was to do it again, I think I would use Emerald on the trim everywhere else.

Hi Kevin, appreciate the feedback. Glad you like the look of the Duration on the walls. On new drywall we do one prime coat and two topcoats as well. For the trim we typically use the Duration semi and aren't too familiar with the satin. For shelving we like using the Emerald Urethane trim paint. It will stick to anything and dries harder than Duration. I'm sure the Emerald semi is great as we have used it a few times and liked it. Sorry about the picture framing with the different base of paint (its happened to us too). Major supply shortage around here so it can be hard to come by. Have a good one!

The main thing I find with BM Regal at 75$/gallon is that I'm finding I need to prime one coat and paint one coat. Two coats of paint works too. I've heard that other pros can get by with just one coat all in. Having a thick paint is necessary for being able to lay it on thick without drips. Two coats of color is pricy and sorta more painful to apply since primer is ultra easy to apply. Kilz 2 is only 15$/gallon. I've been thinking of doing SW but I have noticed that it's less thick and covers a bit less. I wonder if primer plus one coat works well enough. The reviewer mentioned that he can easily blend in but with matte that tends to be easier. I'm curious about the blending ease with other finishes.

I'm a paint novice for sure. But the big surprise for me with emerald in a dark color is that it may take more than 2 coats to cover up a light blue. It also rolls "oily". The other surprise is that there are basically zero fumes with this stuff. Our upstairs was almost unbearable with paint fumes from the Duration we used that lingered for days. Emerald looks great thought! I'm digging the matte for sure.

And also using the same soft white color over Kilim beige semi-gloss in a bathroom with a shower enclosure. If we went with Duration Matte for walls what would you suggest for trim? Satin or semigloss? I like the skip one rule, but our painters typically do semigloss for trim, which I would what to do if we chose to go with an eggshell sheen for walls. Worried with the Duration Matte walls and semigloss trim that the trim will stand out way too much? Also, with the Duration Matte being versatile in all rooms. Can you still use eggshell in bathrooms? Wanting to keep it simple with the same sheens for walls! Would love your suggestions!!!!
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 года назад
Hi Bailie. Good questions. Duration matte has close to an eggshell finish. It has more sheen/shine, than all other mattes we've used. You would be fine to to use semi gloss for trim (we do). Also Duration matte can be used in every room even bathrooms since it has moisture blocker. It is personal preference so go with what you like and not what others tell you, even us :)

@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 года назад
I would not. Cashmere Low-Lustre is several sheen levels above Duration Matte. It's actually shinier than a traditional eggshell. The Cashmere Flat Enamel is very close to the sheen level of a Duration Matte. It's not a dead flat. The flat enamel has a fair amount of sheen to it.

We like doing flat for ceilings and will use matte or eggshell for walls. The more sheen on the ceiling the more you will see the imperfections. Honestly, its personal preference and if you like the ceilings in matte then go for it! Such a great review. I always get Emerald just because I’m extra but now I’m super curious to try this and superpaint. I only do DIY and so only paint every so often, but have come to really appreciate the process when I do. The only thing I know for sure is to stick to SW products. I’m sure BM makes great paints but like duration, not sure I’ll get to experience them on my own. I’m sure if I went through thousands of gallons as you have I’d have an opinion on saving $10-20 per gallon, but was afraid to risk being unhappy stepping down. Are there any post application benefits to duration such as ability clean, longevity, touch ups? What is the reason Emerald is considered a “superior” product?
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 года назад
Duration and Emerald both have moisture and mold blocking agents built into them as well as rubberizing agents. This is supposed to make them more wipeable and durable in the long term. That's also affected by the sheen you decide to go with. Over the year's I haven't noticed any big difference between Emerald and Duration. We use both. I will say that Emerald does better with dark colors. It's much less prone to picture framing which we experience sometimes with darker colors with Duration.

I am not a fan of Cashmere. Duration covers quite a bit better and, at least in my opinion is easier to work with and has a better finish. Sherwin Williams eggshells and satins are a little weird, because they vary from paint line to paint line. @SuperVassarBrothers thanks for the video. I had watched your Aura review so wanted to check on this one as well. I'm painting a small full bath that has had mold issues even though we use the fan (and have changed the fan). Unfortunately, it also has an acoustical tile ceiling 😔 It's an old house and that's what was in it when we bought it 30+ years ago (and we didn't know better back then). We aren't at a point where we can redo the ceiling in there yet so I'm hoping to just make it more pleasant to be in there until we can. I've cleaned the walls and ceiling as best as I can to get the surface mold off and went over it all with vinegar. I'm going to be using the Zinsser mold killing primer (I know you recommend oil but this is the only full bath in the house so I have to get it done in a day). How well does the Duration cure? I have 2 daughters, so sponge baths are out 😂 Anything else besides fans and a dehumidifier that would help with drying and curing? Thanks for the info. Even though it'd probably make most professionals cringe, I'm going to paint over those ceiling tiles, just to seal in the stains and improve the aesthetics in there. I can't stand looking at it anymore.

@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers Год назад
Promar 200 and 400 are more of a builder's grade or commercial product. They aren't necessarily bad products when used in the proper application, but they are at the lower end of Sherwin William's product offerings. The Emerald and Duration line of paints are the top end line of paints from Sherwin Williams. That's what we use on the walls for the majority of the work that we do. The allergy thing is personal. The majority of the off gassing of the paint happens within the first few hours that it's applied. If you're worried about that, then give it a little while to air out before reentering those areas. There are pros and cons to spraying vs rolling. Both methods can be used to get an excellent finish. That's more on the skill level of the painter. There are crews that are excellent at spraying and some that are excellent at using a brush and roller. There are also painters that suck at both. Just make sure if you go with a painter that is going to spray, that they really tarp off everything. It is very common to get overspray on things that you did not want paint on. That is common to spray a second coat relatively quickly after the first coat goes on. I don't know any crews in Vegas, but good luck with your project!

For paint we still like the Duration matte the best (looks more like an eggshell). We like the 2.5" corona cortez (angled) or if you have smaller hands the 2.0" corona cortez (angled). You can buy them from Benjamin Moore stores or online. If your shopping at Sherwin Williams you can go for the Purdy 2.5" angled, or Purdy 2.0" angled. Since your a beginner the Purdy White dove 1/2" nap in the 9 inch roller will do you just fine. It doesn't paint as fast as some other rollers, but its easier to work with and rolls smooth. Thanks for the feedback Keith. If you do Duration matte on the ceiling it will have a sheen on it and it will show the imperfections much more than a flat paint. For us we do flat on basement ceilings and Duration matte on the walls. If you are looking for the easy button then one paint for both would be easier, which is fine as long as you are okay with the finished look. I would recommend back rolling any walls or ceiling that you spray for the finish coats. All that means is after you spray a wall or ceiling take a 1/2" or 3/8" nap roller and go over it (no dipping roller into paint since you sprayed). That way if you have to touch up anything in the future it will blend in. Good luck my friend.

Well definitely don’t use duration interior for exterior work. I don’t use duration exterior so I’m not sure what tip would work. It’ll say on the can.

The color I like is only in emerald designer. How is the flat and satin in comparison to the duration Matte?
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers Год назад
I’ll be testing that product in the not so distant future and doing a review of it. In general the emerald line is less shiny that’s duration. Emerald matte is less shiny than Duration matte and so forth. I’m going to wager a guess that if you want a finish close to Duration matte then I’d go with Emerald satin. Also, if you ask nicely they can pump those designer colors into duration. I just did that on a job last week 😉

Hi Denise. Depends on what your budget is. Super paint satin from Sherwin Williams is a solid performer. If you want more budget friendly paint from Sherwin Williams you may want to try Property solutions in eggshell (close to satin). Here's the link. www.sherwin-williams.com/painting-contractors/products/property-solution-interior-latex I haven't used their eggshell in property solutions but its worth a shot. Good luck!

I will add that to the list of products to review. It's a mid level paint from Sherwin Williams. We don't use it because Duration and Emerald are quite a bit better to work with for a variety of reasons. Long story short, Cashmere isn't great, but it's not terrible.

Can I touch up this matte paint over the years just like I could with flat paint?
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 года назад
It's not going to touch up as well as a flat paint. Duration Matte has a decent sheen to it. It's similar to an eggshell finish in some other brands like Benjamin Moore. The finish is more durable than a flat paint, but it won't touch up as easily.

Emerald is way better.... And this is coming from someone that absolutely loves duration... But it just doesn't get the same quality of finish even on some lighter colors. On high end projects or large walls in general, or dark colors... I automatically go for emerald to save myself the headache. It's just in a league of its own... Just like the emerald trim paint.. Unmatched performance.

so many bad reviews on the SW website about this paint. Watery, very poor coverage because it is so thin, lots of roller marks
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers Год назад
I can only speak to my own experience with this paint over the last 8 years or so. In my experience it's not thin and it covers how would expect a higher end interior paint to cover. Much of the time negative reviews of paint are influenced by user error. Roller marks occur when the product is not being applied properly. It is possible that they got a bad batch, which has happened to us also.

Thank you for this video. My wife and I have decided to paint our interior with SW Pure White in the Duration line. However we are disagreeing on the sheen I prefer matte on the walls since Pure White is a warmer color, but she wants a satin finish. The interior space is small and gets decent but not great natural lighting, hence why she is insisting the satin. I’m just worried the satin might be too bright for a small space and kill the warm feel I want to achieve. Should I just budge?
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 года назад
Sheen can come down to personal preference. That being said I am not a fan of the satin finish in the Duration line of paint. It's hella shiny. Some folks like that look, and that's totally fine. Generally you will see more imperfections on the walls and it's more prone to showing lap and brush marks than the matte finish. We use Duration Matte on the walls in about 95% of the jobs that we do. It's the sheen that the majority of our clients prefer. As far as the room being too bright, that has more to do with LRV and less to do with sheen. You may find these two videos helpful. Good luck with your project, and it should look good no matter which sheen you go with 😁! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DyKh80Yt9k0.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bWV4ShSLYHo.html
