This might be the best shot placement video on RU-vid. Too many others use a lot of hand waving and flat drawings. This model was extremely helpful in visualizing the steep angles involved.

Best thing about this video (and I’ve watched it several times over the last few years, as it’s been reposted) is the use of the anatomical model at different angles, providing visibility to, and importance of, being mindful about exit wound location. For me, that has it permanently ingrained into my memory and pre-shot thinking process-to “aim for the exit wound.” As shown in the video, that’s the difference between double- and only single-lung, or simply stated, between an almost guaranteed quick ethical kill, and a potentially never recovered deer. I have both of my sons watch this one religiously before ever allowing them to step foot into the woods during season, and I really believe it ups their odds of success dramatically.

Super useful video for a new deer hunter such as myself. I've seen images before of the aiming point for different shots but the use of a model to show angles and anatomy is exactly what I've been searching for

Many people talk about deer hunting, but it seems to me that Kip really knows his business and is able to explain it, and above all, he doesnt need to read a script like all the other NDA presenters, it is embarrasing when they do.

Good stuff. As an archer I have always accounted for the deer jumping the string…and shying away from the shoulder blade. Broadside…an inch or two about the elbow really does give you the best of all worlds…if you don’t catch the back of the heart..you will definitely double kung the animal. On a 30-40 yard…when the animal has time to seriously jump the string you are not into the shoulder blade. IMHO. :)

If you'll notice on your model in the "quartering away" example, that right shoulder bone is visible. If one aligns vertically with that off shoulder the arrow, or bullet, will transit both lungs possibly getting the heart as well. If the arrow hits the opposite humerus or scapula, it has already cut its way through both lungs. In "resting" the aim point on a spot, vertical alignment first, then horizontal. Some come up from ground and some go down from above to get their aim, but the key is to align with where the bullet/arrow should come out(deflection is not a calculation to be concerned with). Your 101 series has been very good so far.

Yes, always aim to put the bullet or arrow through the opposite shoulder where you would hit it if shooting from opposite side broad side. Or with rifle you can aim to shoot through opposite shoulder area. It drops bucks fast.

All in all pretty good. But these videos really should show the difference when the leg is forward or back. Every vid shows if the deer is standing with the leg in a neutral position, but never explain that to new hunters.

Not talking smack or anything but even as a new hunter if you can't tell the difference between a leg back and leg forward shot maybe it isn't time to nock and arrow until you do... however, I agree with your point!

They also don’t mention that in a quartering away shot to shoot for the opposite shoulder. If the angle is too great, you may want to pass

Shoot adult arrows and the aim is the same. Edit: To clarify I'm refering to leg forward vs centered vs back. Quartering shots still need proper accommodations.

The information delivered in the video was outstanding. The background music in my opinion what's the complete opposite of outstanding. Very distracting in my opinion unnecessary.

Remember everyone, that crosshair he illustrated is great knowledge to have, but I aim a little lower than he indicates because the deer CAN jump the string. There are many excellent videos about how a deer actually "jumps" the string and the correlation between their head being upright versus down feeding. When it is down they are able to pivot their front shoulders down and catapault themselves off their back legs. Thats where the "duck" or "jumping" the string comes from. They dip theire front hald and spring if their back legs. When their head is up, there kuch pess gravity helping them with that komentum shift, so they have to use more muscles to do so, and they dont dip nearly as much.

It also comes down to how alert a deer is at the time of release. A deer may lose concentration and not do anything or maybe alert and feeding. I've found body language is the key and what they do coming towards your stand or site. Deer who look at the stand before approaching are incredibly likely to be actively listening to any abnormal sounds. Further deer that have gone to full alert they react to squirrels or birds jumping around in brush. Any sudden sound will cause them to look. Those are the deer I've found most likely to react to string sounds.

Great video except you should explain to all that it is important that the leg is in a straight or forward position on the shot at any broadside deer. If the leg is back, the leg bones block your shot explanation.

So many people talk about how great the high shoulder shot is. They don’t understand that a high shoulder shot is a spine shot and that is why their deer drops immediately. If they would look at your visual aid and see how far up the shoulder blade goes and then realize that the spine dips down drastically and continues in the neck. I don’t want bone or blood shot meat. That’s why I will always speak out for double lung shots, whether or not you also hit heart. A double lung shot animal just will not get away and seldom goes more than 50 yds. Last year, an article critical of the 6.5Creedmore, said that the buck they double lunged ran off and they never found it. The caliber wasn’t the problem. Because of scarce ammunition availability, they bought some target loads. You must pay attention particularly if you are a new hunter.

I shot a deer this morning. The shot was high but I think it was below the spine. I could see the arrow stuck in it when it ran, but it was in pretty deep. It ran hard about 40 yards then it just stopped. It stood there for probably 15-20 minutes. I noticed it was sort of swaying. It finally took off again another 30-40 yards and stopped again. Then it stood there for 20+ minutes and the ran off and I lost sight of it. I could not find the arrow but I went to where it first stopped at and there was a small puddle of blood but not too much for how long it stood there. The shot was just high but not forward or back. Just seeing if anyone had an idea about what type of hit it was and if I have a chance of finding it.

You just described my worst fear. So far, I've been fortunate to get good shot placement and put them down fairly quickly. I fear an injured deer the most. Hope you see him again someday.

3:31 Awesome vid and thank you but I have shot a deer through the “ no zone “ above the lungs below the spine in 2015 and harvested the deer in 2016 and got to see the healings first hand and maybe he was completely exhaled and I’m unlucky but I assure you he was hit there and no lung trauma

The "void" does not exist. Period. SOMETIMES weird things can happen and an animal could survive a double lung. Super rare, but it could happen, the void does not.

You’re 3” too far forward. Aim for backside of heart. Ideally.

@@jonathansnyder8686 with a bow. Double lung shot. Dont have to worry about scapula. It would be the center of the optimal “kill zone” with a heart also being cut if you hit your spot . If you miss your spot 2” right you are dead center heart. If you miss 2 left you are still good double lung. If you aim where video shows and miss 2” right you will hit bone. Its a good shot if you hit where you aim( the best spot for sure) . I just think its better to play yhe higher percentage. Hunting for the past 35 years has taught me that a lot of things happen in that moment to make you miss your mark.

The heart is immaterial if you hit both lungs. With a big hole through the lungs, the heart will pump blood out faster for a couple of minutes until it stops

What most hunters don't realize is the back 1/3 of the lungs taper towards the back as the round stomach fills in that space. The stomach is almost touching the back side of the heart, barely separated by the diaphragm and a little lung.

You cover angles I've wondered about and I appreciate that very much. But where is the shot when that trophy buck is facing you head on? Is there an aim point in the chest that is lethal? Thanks for this vid.
