With so many models to choose from, what is the ideal size Silky Saw for Survival and Bushcraft? In this video I give my opinion from my experiences with these amazing saws. While they are not the cheapest option out there, the quality of construction and the long lasting saw blades make them an excellent choice!

"I went through a stage of my life where I wanted everything to be black or olive drab or camouflage, but in the woods [...] having something that's brightly coloured is a good idea". Very true and recognizable. I was already considering a 240mm version, but you just helped me decide on the orange one. Let's face it, we won't be using these tools in secretive survival missions, but in the woods while camping and the like. Usability > Aesthetics.

The little hyper extended knee effect on these saws is extremely underrated. As someone who is a professional trailworker/ wildland firefighter I have a lot of situations (more so on trail work) where I have to cut a multitude of branches and roots that are very close or touching ground. That featur is amazing cause it let's me get my saw cut angle good without worrying about dirting the saw

Very objective comparisons, great video. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I bought a Gomboy 8.3" 2 years ago to replace my bowsaw when we downsized our RV. On an early spring trip, we ran into an ice storm during the night, and in the AM on our way out, we discovered a tree had fallen across the road. A couple limbs were about 12", so I thought "OK, hatchet time- 2 hours wasted". But I got out my little Gomboy and gave that a shot. I couldn't believe how that thing ripped through those limbs. We were out in about 20 minutes. I'm a fan, for sure.

Great rundown on their saws. I have the Katana 500 and the Zubat 390. Both are amazing. Although the Zubat doesn't fold down, you get 15.5" of curved blade, which makes cutting through larger logs quite easy, and a really good handle. Not as small but can still attach to the side of a backpack and your belt no problem. Thinking about getting the Gomboy 240 just for fun 😉

6/29/2021 Thanks for this video. You are the first presenter to compare these saws, described how to use them, and discussed pros and cons that I have found. Up until seeing this I tended to shun these saws, partly due to ignorance and partly due to cost versus use. Now I am more ready to add one to my kit and dispense with the heavy small carpenters saw that I have repurposed to substitute for one of these. I am looking forward to viewing more of the similar videos that you have, very informative, thanks again. ;-)

Like this video, own a couple of Silky Zubat saws so I’m just studying the folding saws. Anyone interested in sawing knowledge @8:55 a curved blade is best used when cutting over head or when the wood is below the waist. Also for harder woods a blade with more teeth might be nicer to cut with (blade will jump/vibrate less on harder woods, and smaller diameter branches too). Larger teeth offer a more aggressive cut (jump and vibration also help clear the teeth when the wood is wet or sappy).

Good review. I am a Scout Master and have been using a silky saw for the last year - Zubat 330. It is great and easy to use - perhaps even easier than the folding saws. The emphasis on most of these reviews seems to be on how fast they can cut. They are super fast. But, there are other attributes that don't always get mentioned. Since I purchased my Zubat, I have started using it for may tasks around the house where I would otherwise use a skill or carpenters hand saw. Two things that you didn"t mention that may/may not be of interest to someone doing bushcraft/survivor stuff. 1) They make a very straight cut. Try doing that with a bow saw! I would think that it would make ripping a log much easier. Second, the cut that they make is very smooth - even with large or extra large teeth. Not sure if that is an advantage with a bushcrafter, but I do think that it may be important when fitting two pieces of wood together to make a camp objet or tool. I purchased a "folding saw" from Lee Valley in Canada. It looks like a knock off of silk but is made in Korea. it is 600mm and with shipping and all came in at $101 vs. the $160 to $200 I would have to pay for the Silky Katanaboy 500 or $250 for the Katanaboy 650. My next purchase will likely be one of the smaller 180-240 size folding saws. Thanks again for your review.

I enjoyed watching this video. I own the Pocketboy 130, several Gomboy 210, Laplander and Corona saws. I have a survival kit that is in an Arc'teryx 25 liter backpack for use on a light plane when flying over mountains or other remote areas. I consider a saw so important that I have stuffed into the bag a Gomboy 210 and the Laplander. The Silky saw cuts better but sometimes breaks, especially when the outside temp is below freezing. I have never seen a Bahco Laplander blade break. The Corona seems to cut just as well as the Silky but may not stay sharp as long. The Corona would however stay sharp plenty long to either be rescued, walk out, or die, in a survival situation. I like that the Laplander locks closed so I don't have to carry an extra sheath in the bag. I use a couple of yellow silicone rubber bands to make sure it stays closed. I use the silicone bands because they don't rot. Ranger bands would be just as good.

Outstanding video! I got on a folding saw kick a while back and bought a half dozen of them from different makers. The Silky saws work the best (imho). I have used a Pocket Boy 170 for many years. I just got the Gomboy 240 about six weeks ago. The Pocket Boy is now in Mumma Bear’s pack. (I was hoping you would pick the Gomboy at the end 😉 as it is my favorite saw now.) I also like to have a saw in the fire kit. I keep a Primos folding saw in the main fire kit. It has been a good saw for the last 5 years or so. I also have a Woodzig folding saw that I bought over 20 years ago, and it is still going strong. It’s the first ‘pull-cut’ Saw I ever had. Used it regularly for more than ten years and it still cuts great.

I went for their F180 saw. Not because it's the budget offer, but because of the size to weight ratio of the saw. Its lighter than their smallest pocketboy, but has a blade that's longer than the 170mm pocketboy. To me for hiking out in the woods and using a small stick stove as my main source of cooking and boiling water, that's the best of both worlds.

The 240 curved blade is my favorite too. The length is just about right to cut most anything and it will still stay put in a cargo pocket. I recently retired and bought a 20+ acre homestead with a great woodlot and have been doing a ton of improvements sense it hadn't been maintained in probibly 75-100 years and this saw really works great to trim branchs and to clear pin cherry and undergrowth with. Up to 4-5" trees are no problem at all with the 240, and even bigger if you wish. I only wish they'd been avilible when I was working on the AT patroling and doing trail work from Hanover to Lincoln NH , and also while patrolling in the Lincoln Woods Wilderness area . Those were my 2 stretchs I took care of and hiked for >16 years. I'd stay out for either 1 or 2 weeks at a time and one of them would have been great to have while taking care of hundreds of miles of trails or when I was doing backcountry firefighting assignments! Man one of those would have saved me some serious elbow grease compaired to the 2 1/2 lb axe or the bow saw I used to carry, no doubt ! If you don't own a Silky saw and spend any amount of time in the woods or have a wood lot of your own,,you just don't know what your missing by not having one,,,,Seriously ! There the best I've ever used and you can take that from someone that has spent > 20 years,,,and counting,,, working in the woods every single day, not counting that I have also done most all of the major long distance hiking trails and done wildland firefighting all over the US and Canada besides. So I'd have to say from experience I know what works and Lord Knows, I've tried them all. Silky saws ROCK and are the best hand saws I've found to date !!

I own many Silky saws as well, some that weren't even featured on this video, and for bug-out, preparedness, and on-the-move survival I chose the same one. The Silky Gomboy is simply the most versatile when you consider having to put it in a pack (when you factor all the things needed for survival, and not just an outing into the woods).

Great comparison video. I bought a Silky F180 after watching a ton of RU-vid reviews of folding saws, and I've loved using it for the last year. It's great for my use, which is minor trail maintenance during day hikes. I throw it into my mesh pocket or water bottle pocket and barely notice it. I'm glad I got it over the Pocketboy because it is lighter and a longer blade. I may upgrade to the Gomboy for more heavy duty cutting of blowdowns on the trail, but it's hard to beat the weight of the F180. If you haven't tried it yet maybe pick it up and compare to the Pocketboy for a future video. Just by looks, the F180 handle seems much more comfortable.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching and for the input! The one thing going against the Silky saws is their weight. I may check out the F180 at some point.
@bigzach322
@bigzach322 5 лет назад
@@WayPointSurvival Yeah the weight is the main difference from the Pocketboy because of the lack of metal in the handle. Seems flimsy but it works fine for my purpose. I've been able to cut through 4-5" downed limbs on the trail in no time. These are some of the reviews I watched before making the purchase. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8hYxkYyEY4A.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QKS-BqYuEGQ.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_1emUbDZlso.html

I was very torn on sizes myself when I was looking a few years ago, but I ended up finding a 500 katanaboy for nearly half price straight from japan. I would use it summer or winter and yes though it is big, too big for many things, I have used it around the house just as much as in the woods. Where I go tends to have more pine and birch than anything else, but the excess of pine means it burns up quickly so the bigger saw cuts bigger logs than some for reasonable times compared to making more cuts with a smaller saw for the same burn time. A 350 would be better for some places in the summer for sure, and the next time I see one on sale I might but until then I am quite happy with my beasty katanaboy.

Some people may assume to look at the blades that they are naked and not rust protected.

I have a Gomboy 240 and a Katanaboy 500, they're both superb! The Katanaboy replaced my Sven saw folding bucksaw, and I use it about the same way. The Gomboy is a quicker, easier, lighter choice to use for bushcrafting and general use. The katanaboy starts to really come into its own when you've set up camp, it's cold, and it's time to *seriously* start stacking the firewood, or you're setting up to make a serious shelter (not just a one-nighter) when you start talking raised beds and a frame instead of just a tensioned sheet for overhead protection. As you said, it's kind of in a different class than the others. It's also awesome for trail work, especially in the spring or after a big wind when you're likely to come across downed stuff that you want to clear off the trail to open it again.

I often carry that exact Gomboy 240 curve myself. It is a fantastic saw. I have been carrying the Bigboy quite a bit this winter because I have enjoyed being able to cut larger materials. I have even made a few stump anvils out of medium logs in my camps which is a task not usually suited to a folding saw. I was skeptical about Silky for a long time because of so many people saying they are brittle however, I believe after using them extensively at this point, a large part of those cases must be user error because both of mine have been flawless. Great information and demonstration James! God bless.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 5 лет назад
Thank you, my friend! Very true! As in most things tool related, user error accounts for a lot of the issues that people have with them. If there is a manufacturing defect, all I have ever heard is praise from those who have contacted Silky's service department. Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. God bless you and yours as well.
