Nice sounding pickups! Good job! I've been pulling half of the pole pieces out of my humbuckers ever since I stumbled upon a RU-vid-video about it a couple of years ago and it really brings the sound very close to single coil territory, especially on high output pups that would otherwise be quite muddy, essentially making cheap pups sound way more expensive. :) I've also been experimenting with the number of slugs/screws pulled from each coil, all the way from 6 + 0 to 0 + 6 and it makes the same kind of tonal difference that slanting the pup by different degrees in different directions would do in a single coil. It really brings a plethora of tonal choices to the table but so far I've normally settled for 3 + 3 in the bridge position and 0 + 6 or 6 + 0 in the neck position, kind of emulating the slanted bridge pup and straight neck pup of a strat or a tele. Since it's such a simple and neat trick, I've kinda just been waiting for some manufacturer/builder to pick up (no pun intended) on it. I'm in no way surprised it'd turn out to be you, Dylan. It's right up your alley, outside the box and all that. I'm really looking forward to see how far you'll be able to take this concept. I mean, there's a significant difference between amateurs like me lucking out while pulling stuff apart and someone like you who actually knows what he's doing. :)

The new Femder WRH are out now. My 2020 American Original Telecaster Custom has one in the neck position. As far as I know, that is the only guitar that the pickup is available in at the moment. They are also available on their website for $200 a pop. The pickup does sound really good, but these Slant 6 pickups are great for guitars with a standard humbucker rout. They sound great!

It is so refreshing to hear someone tell the truth about capacitors, pots, magnet wire etc. I use to rewind pickups back some 25-30 years ago and I find your information to be 100% correct. If people want to put bumblebee caps in there guitar so be it bur there won’t be any change in tone.

Hi, it's been an old trick to remove the screws from the coils to get more singlecoil sound out of a humbucker guitar.
@laughingdaffodils5450
@laughingdaffodils5450 3 года назад
Removing the screws is the furthest you can go in that direction, but I'd recommend drilling the screws all the way down first. And also setting the pups down as far as possible as well. You're just making the coupling between the strings and the coils a little less tight with any of those moves.

This is very exciting! I love when people get out of the box with humbuckers. The original p.a.f design is not sacred and it has some major flaws: it is muddy, it is dull, it lacks definition. And i also think it applies to high output humbuckers. I love very low wind humbuckers, they have great bite and definition, less mid hump. I have a DiMarzio HFH in the bridge of my sg, but I’m wanting to try a Lollar El Rayo. Your design also sounds promising.

So there would have to be a different bobbin scheme, but what if you made a single coil pickup with the same pole configuration that the bobbins were trimmed so the coil was in the shape of a parallelogram with a magnet offset to the polepieces but parallel to the long sides of the parallelogram shape that used the high and low end pole pieces as corners? I would draw a picture but, you know...

Go down into a storm cellar that's up to 10' W by 10' L by 6' to 8' H Solid Concrete with Rebar Reinforcement Block Walls and 4" to 6" thick Solid Steel Road-Grader Blades welded together Ceiling covered in about 6" to 8" thick Rebar Reinforced Concrete, all burried underground approimately 6' of dirt and granite rock mix with a thick augustine grass cover. The Door is 6" of solid steel. Completely waterproof and has a 6" to 8" capped round filtered air duct vent that extends 6' above ground. Now take your 25 to 50 to 100 watt amp 2x12 combo of 4x12 half or double stack amp, guitar, effects and light it all up, but beware of the SPL's/Volume and bring ear protection but it will not matter. You will feel your body react to the SPL's and forced air concussion waves surrounding you while they try to travel out of the ventilation shaft tube. I could not use but up to 50 watts tube amp head set on 3 to 5 SPL's/Volume, pushing a a 4x12 half stack cab, while wearing earplugs and aircraft/shotgun hearing protection. I tried varying Wattage and SPL meter readings. Reminds me of a NASA demonstration I attended and observed and heard when they fired up a vat of liquid oxygen/hydrogen fuel mixture in a football field sized hanger 100' W by 100' L by 50' H ! ! ! It made me think of that HAM Monkey that listened to the rocket engine blasting and while also pulling the 16+ G's in test flight ! ! ! What Power, the kind that causes human body parts and non-human structural damages. People wonder why musicians and non-musicians have so many biological malfunctions such as ringing ears, vertigo, brain synapse damages or other organ malfunctions and failures , as they grow older and older due to being subjected to above High down to below Sub SPL's of the Sound Wave Spectrum and Concussion Waves ! ! ! 👍🤘🎸😎🙏. So these are very much like a P-bass split pick-up. The coils are going through the whole 6-string width but do not pick-up signal from half the strings, which removes that little cancellation effect we always get from using two pick-ups in combination. The difference to a P-bass PU is that resistance and inductance are higher through more wire, which has some impact on tone. Halving the resistance would produce a higher peak and halving the inductance would shift this peak towards higher frequencies. All in all, the same pick-up with half the coil (as in a split P-bass) would have yet more and higher highs.

The show is cool and informative...but you so need to to stop using gibson and fenders oriented content. Im a Luthier for over 20 years and those 3 companies produce the worst guitars on the planet and they do absolutely nothing to make their products better. And with so many known issues, you'd figure after 75 years they do something but sadly they're the same crap they've been pedaling...,..theres a damn good reason fender gibson and guitar center are sinking faster than the titanic.
