What's the best home battery to buy in Australia in 2024? I asked expert installers their opinion.
There are now dozens of home battery brands available in Australia, so it can be challenging to figure out what may be best for your circumstances.
You could spend ages meticulously comparing technical aspects such as efficiency, backup capabilities and peak power of everything available.
Or you could quickly narrow down the list by consulting those who deal with solar batteries daily. This includes asking what they would install for their own homes - which is exactly what I did.
00:00 - Introduction
00:33 - What are the best value batteries in 2024?
03:31 - What are the best batteries overall?
04:44 - What are the best-supported brands?
Watch my Sungrow battery installation: • Are Budget Home Batter...
Watch a SolarEdge battery installation: • SolarEdge Battery Inst...
NOTE: Selecting a reliable home battery brand is only half the battle. It's equally crucial to find a competent installer. Considering a solar battery stores a substantial amount of energy in a compact space, failure to do so could result in catastrophic consequences. The worst outcome from a faulty battery and/or installation can be an explosion, leading to an uncontrollable fire. Combining a quality battery with a skilled installer ensures safety.

Why does an EV battery cost 20 grand to replace (60 - 70kW) and a 10kW home storage battery costs 10 to 12 grand? Sounds like a bit of price gouging to me. Can't wait for the sodium-ion tech to start flowing through to bring these prices down. Or will the price gouging continue?

They have to run through the expensive raw materials they purchased before the crash so the stock has to flow through before they might and I say might pass on the savings then. Hi Finn, big fan of your work. I got my solar installed through solar quotes a few years ago and I loved your service. I have some questions about the batteries, specifically about Powerwall. Would Powerwall 2 keep charging itself from solar panels if we have a prolonged outage for a few days. I know that a DC coupled system such as Fronius + Byd can do it, but can an AC coupled system such as Powerwall 2 do it? As Powerwall 3 would be having an integrated invertor, would it be able to charge itself in a prolonged outage exclusively from the solar panels? I like Fronius + Byd option and the flexibility it provides interms of charging during an outage, but don't like the delay in switiching on to the battery during an outage and also the fact that I might have to upgrade the home to a 3 phase system from a single phase system.

On the micro inverter thing we have 20 APsystems microinverters (on 20 modules) installed back in 2014. Out of 20 units we’ve had to replace 6 ( or is it 7.. ? ) of them. Their tech support has been “sort of .. adequate “ in that they’ve just sent me a new inverter in the post every time I’ve reported another failure. (To be clear, the installation was NOT done by a SQ recommended installer. ) I am a licensed electrical technician by training but did not do the initial installation myself I did however change the failed inverters like for like. This would be a considerable expense if you were paying for the labour. We have definitely benefited from the micro inverters as a design concept as we have intermittent and partial shading depending on the time of year. I’d be very interested to hear from other people about their experience with the reliability of their micro inverter installations whether they are APsystems, Enphase or another brand. I recall the APsystems option was a bit cheaper (than Enphase)at the time of installation which did influence our decision but if we’d paid for the labour to replace the failed inverters we’d be well out of pocket with regard to the initial price difference. As it is, taking PV modules off the roof every 18 months to replace a micro inverter has been a major P.I.T.A. even though they were supplied ( replaced) at no cost. I hope that APsytems has changed the design of that model of inverter. We live in Tasmania so persistent, excessive heat is rarely an issue. Maybe one day if the large eucalypt on the north side of out house falls over we’ll stick in a single large inverter.
@ja8020

@@chrisheath623 I think you might have had a different experience with enphase but only time can tell. And if that 1 big inverter goes down its the whole array down. I think in Tassie and with wait times for a replacment inverter (6 weeks min??) I think you are still in front.

No for PW2 if you have micro inverters and will install gateway and go from AC micros to DC storage and then back to AC for the house. Yes if you have string inverter and gateway. It may be my personal situation but im sure that there are many for whom home batteries at their current levels of technology and pricing do not make economic sense. A much bettter approach is to use similar sums installing a suitably sixed and efficient quality PV system and replace all or most of your elecrical appliances and lighting with the latest energy efficient models avaiable and then ensuring discretionary use is done in daylight. Home batteries instalion needs to be priced at less than a third of current levels which have comparable payback times taking decades. Generally the most costly component of our electricity bill now are the adminstrative charges and it will take a significant rise in grid supply charges or lowering of battery costs before I would consider this under developed technology again. @buddhamack1491
@buddhamack1491 Месяц назад
Exactly. We had a solar system that came free with our house when it was built about 6 or 7 years ago. It wasn't the best system but it reduced the bills. We were looking at a battery system, but none were really compatible or worth it. We ended up replacing the entire solar setup with a bigger and better system that is ready for a battery system in the future. The new system works really well, we only get small bills over winter. I'd love a battery system to cover power outages and morning and night time use, but as you said it's not economically viable. It would never pay for itself, even over 20 years with our solar already covering most of the bills. Until a cheaper system comes to market we likely won't bother with batteries.

This used to be the case. But with smart metering, it has shifted because they bill differently at different times, and 4pm to 9pm is quite hefty - close to 50c a Kw. Luckily, everything else is fairly cheap, but the solar during the day covers most of the day time use. The OVO EV plan gives additional benefits of cheap off peek (12am-6am is 10c per KW, and 11am to 2pm is free). Solar feed in is 8c. During the free period, I use up all my solar and LOTS of free power with charging my car, washing, dishwasher, aircon, etc… and charging a battery too. The main killer is the peek time, as we consistently use a lot of power between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, then a bit more up until midnight. During this high cost period, we use about 13kw of power. It works out to about $5 per day that a battery can cover. I am getting a 13.6wk battery installed in 2 weeks at $10,000, and we get a $3,000 rebate. So that is $7,000. As my cost is $1,825. Per year, a battery now makes sense. It will have paid for itself in less than 4 years. Put simply, before 1) smart metering, 2) the lowering of our feed in tariffs, 3) before rebates, and 4) the recent up to 50% price hikes a battery today however no-longer takes 10 to 20 years to pay off. For me, 4 years and it has paid for itself. My power bill should now go to close to $0.
