The 1998 Yamaha YZ125 was the ultimate motocross bike...mine made 48 horsepower, it wasn’t stock by any means, and that’s Dynamometer proven. But it was explosive like a god damn stick of Dynamite... mine was running custom head work, pro circuit works pipe & silencer, wiseco high compression piston, custom machined chromo-alloy 30-tooth rear sprocket, custom machined stainless 22-tooth front sprocket, Factory Connection suspension, Pro Taper Contour bars, Pro Circuit Aluminum throttle tube, Hinson Clutch basket, inner hub & pressure plate, Barnett clutch plates, Boyesen Rad Valve & Reeds... I rebuilt my ‘98 & ran it until 2003 when I got hurt really bad and stopped racing... I’ll never forget this one time I was out at a practice track in Uxbridge, Massachusetts & there was this guy talking all this shit about how much better 4-Strokes are than 2-Strokes... and I fucking SMOKED his YZ250F with my YZ125 & then he was on his YZ426F and I smokes his ass on that with my 125 too...

This is why the YZ125 is my all time ABSOLUTE favourite motocross bike! I just love the high revs, the sound and the power just hits you all at once. Ive ridden many 2 stroke 125s by now, but never any motocross 125s, like non street legal, FULL on race track configuration, but i would love to ride one soon!💙

The performance difference between a shorty silencer and regular length silencer works like this; The overall length of pipe (the small diameter tubing that goes into the silencer right to the end tip of the silencer) determines power curve. The shorter distance (shorty silencer) causes the engine to loose power or "fall off" power at higher RPM limit. This is called "falling off the pipe"). The longer overall length (stock silencer or FMF regular length silencer) will cause the engine to hold its peak power through higher RPM, before "falling off the pipe". So why run a shorty? In some conditions the shorty will provide a bit more snap out of tight corners on a super tight track, where high RPM is not required (generally low speed tight tracks). Here is a good example; I had the shorty on YZ250 and when exiting a turn onto medium length uphill double, my engine fell off the pipe mid way up the jump face, causing me to have to shift to 4th gear just prior to the jump face. I switched to my regular length FMF silencer, and now could leave the bike in 3rd gear, and it would continue axcelerating right through and off jump face. Thats the difference between shorty and regular length. Also its important to keep the packing tight in a silencer as this provides a stronger pulse back through the pipe and the engine makes more power. In my opinion, the only people who should entertain a shorty, are basically advanced pro riders who need to tune RPM for given corners and track conditions.
